WILLIAM BONDY, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
FIRE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,123, dated February 27, 1900. Application filed April 27, 1899. Serial No. '7l4=,625. (N0 model.)
T0 (on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BONDY, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a fire-escape by means of whichthe occupants of a dwelling-house which is on fire may take refuge thereon outside of the burning building and by means of which also they may pass from said burning building to the adjoining building. The aforesaid fire-escape is preferably portable and easily and quickly adjustable in place and so secured to the building as not to disfigure the front thereof.
A further object of the invention is to prevent trespass from one building to another when the fire-escape is not in use; and to this end it is so constructed and arranged that when desired for use aft-er the occupants from the burning building have taken refuge thereon it can be swung over to the adjacent window in the adjoining building, thereby forming, as it were, a swing-bridge from a burning building to the adjoining house.
- Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the invention detached from the house. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view. Fig. 4 is an illustration showing the upper part of abuilding and a portion of the adjoining building and the invention in its normal condition and in dotted lines when it is swung into position with the adjoining window. Fig. 5 is an enlarged front view of the invention detached. from the building, and Fig. 6 a view in perspective thereof, with the means for attaching it to the building.
In carrying out this invention I provide a suitable platform, such as g, which may consist of transverse slats h, mounted in side bars 0, which are hinged to an upright frame, consisting of the lower horizontal bars 11, the upright posts I), the transverse bars 7c, and the diagonal strengthening-rods m, bracing the posts I), and also braced at their center by the metallic diskn. The folding platform g is preferably supported by the side chains a, connected at their lower ends to the side bars 0 by the rings f, and at their upper ends by the rings f, to the upper ends of the posts I).
It will be seen that a simple portable folding platform is provided; and the object of this invention is to provide such a portable folding platform which is adapted to be detachably hinged to one of the upper windows adjacent to an upper window in the adjoining building. To this end any simple means is provided for attaching and hinging the platform to the building. As here shown, L- shaped brackets are employed, which are secured by any suitable means to the wall of the building adjacent to the window in front of which the fire-escape is to be located. The back frame at top and bottom of the posts I) of the fire-escape are provided on each side with pintles 6, so that a part of the latter on either side of the fire-escape may be inserted in the sockets of the brackets Z, accordingly as the window on which the fire-escapeis used is located on the right or left hand side of the building. The brackets Z or brackets Z may be located on the face of the building as desired, as shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will readily be seen that in case of fire the occupants of the floor on which the fire-escape is shown may retreat to the fire-escape, and the lattercan be swung around to the adjacent window in the adjoinin gbuilding and their escape thereby effected. Of course it is understood that each floor may be provided with this fire-escape. When not in use, the platform g may be folded up against the back frame and serve as a window-guard, some suitable means being provided for fastening it from swinging open.
The advantages of this invention are that a fire-escape is provided which is detachable, portable, and light, can be'folded up when not in use, and is easily and quickly adjustable. In regard to its being'portable, it may be kept indoors when not in use and hung in place when needed. This, with the feature of its being swung laterally, avoids the GX-' posure of such a structure to trespass.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A fire-escape, consisting of a platform and a back frame, hinged, so as to be folded together, and foldable supports, connecting the back frame with the platform, said back frame having means whereby it can be detachably hinged at one end to the face of a building at one side of a window, so that the platform is suspended across the sill of said window, and may be swung horizontally away from said window to an adjoining window, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A fire-escape, consisting of a platform and a back frame, hinged so as to be folded together, the back frame being supplied with hinge-pintles, and folding supports connecting the back frame with said platform, the back frame and platform being adapted to be suspended across out the sill of a window and to be hinged at one side thereof, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination with a window and sockets for hinges in the face of the building at the side of said window, of a portable foldable fire-escape, consisting of a back frame, and a platform hinged together, and adapted to extend across the sill of the window, the back frame having pint1es,which engage with thesaid hinge-sockets at the side of the window, andfolding supports connecting said back frame with the platform, as and for the purposes set forth. Signed at the city, county, and State of New York this 25th day of April, A. D. 1899.
