UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. CANFIELD, OF HARRISON, MICHIGAN.
BOOK SUPPORTING AND ADJUSTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,944, dated February 20, 1900.
Application fil d April 14, 1899. Serial No. 712,969. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. CANFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of Clare and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Supporting and Adjusting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved device for elevating ledgers or books-that is, for raising the sections of a ledger or other book to enable the user to work upon the ledger or other book with greater ease, comfort, and facility than heretofore, the object being the provision of a device which can be produced at so low a figure as to make the device practical, useful, and necessary.
To attain the desired object, the invention consists of a device for raising the sides of a book embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts to produce an efficient device, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved device in position for use to show the manner of using, and Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one end of my device.
My device is of extremely-simple construction, consisting of the strip A, of wood or other suitable material, having the central recess or seat B, in which rests the central portion of a ledger or other book when opened, and secured near each end of the strip by means of the screws 0 are disks or rollers D, provided with the handles D for revolving them, and as the screw C is eccentrically placed the disk may be revolved to give any desired level to the leaves of the book. I also provide the strip with the rests, braces, or supports E, which fit in the grooves F, formed in the strips.
The construction and operation of my device will be readily understood from the drawings and description, and I will simply state that the ledger or other book which it is found necessary to use is placed in an inolined position upon the support, with the central portion of the book when open resting in the central seat and the sides lying upon the disks or cams, and to bring the sides of the book on a level or to adjust the sides to suit the use it is simply necessary to turn the disks or cams the proper distance to raise or lower the sides.
I claim- 1. Abook supporting and adjusting device, consisting of a strip provided with a central recess or seat, and disks or rollers pivoted eccentrically near the ends of the strip.
2. A book supporting and adjusting device, consisting of a strip provided with a central recess or seat, rollers or disks eccentrically pivoted to the strips, and rests or braces detachably connected to thestrip to steady said strip.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. CANFIELD.
