UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVARD P. \VAGGONER, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE A. A. GRIFFING IRON COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
SECTION FOR GENERATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,926, dated February 20, 1900.
Application filed January 2, 1897. Renewed December 18, 1899. Serial. No. 740,822. (No model.)
and has for its object the production of a section which is simple in construction, is economically and readily manufactured, handled, stored, and shipped, and is practical and elfective in operation; and to this end the invention consists in the combination, construction, and arrangement of thecomponent parts of the section, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin the claims.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and rear isometric views of my improved section, a portion of the section being broken away in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3isahorizontal section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1, the grate-bar being indicated by dotted lines.
My improved section A preferably consists of a single casting and is formed with substantially flat front and rear walls a a, having their upper and lower portions decreased in width toward their top and bottom edges, and with top and bottom walls a a which are generally formed substantially continuous or unbroken, extend or curve toward each other in opposite directions from substantially their central portions a and are united together at the opposite sides a of the section. The upper and lower portions of the rear wall ct are formed with circulating openings a and the front wall a is usually formed with openings a which are alined with the openings a and receive clamping-bolts, (not illustrated,) passed through a number of the sections.
The upper part of the section A is hollow for forming a ti mid-containing chamber and is provided with passages A,which extend from front to rear thereof through its front and rear walls, beneath the upper circulatingopening a, for forming parts of fines. These passages are usually arranged in horizontal series, are formed of greater height than width, and afford a large amount of heatingsurface. The intermediate and lower parts of the section A are provided with a recess A extending inwardly from the rear face of said section, from front to rear thereof, between the passages A and the lower circulating-opening, and said parts are also provided with fire and draft openings A A, arranged one above the other and extending from the recess through the front wall of the section. The recess A forms the front ends of a combustion-chamber and an ash-pit for permitting the direct application of the heat to the superimposed portion of the section, and its opposite side walls are provided with shoulders a which support a suitable gratebar B, arranged crosswise of the section between said opposite side walls, as seen in Fig. 2. The upper wall of the recess A is provided with transverse corrugations a for forming a crown-sheet having a large amount of heating-surface, and the lower wall of said recess extends or curves upwardly toward the opposite ends of said upper wall.
A' watercontaining chamber A of less thickness than the section A extends from front to rear thereof in front of the upper end of the recess A and partially surrounds the fire-opening A and a second water-containing chamber A is arranged at the bottom and side edges of said recess and projects rearwardly beyond the rear face of the chamber A for forming the bottom and sides of the recess. These water-containing chambers add greatly to the efficiency of the section. The portion of the front wall of the recess A interposed between the lower edge of the chamber A and the adjacent edge of the chamber A is here shown as formed integral with the adjacent parts of the section A; but it will be obvious to one skilled in the art that said portion may consist of a separate plate or plates secured in position to close the lower portion of the recess A The construction and operation of my invention will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a section for a generator, the same consisting of a single casting provided with circulating-openings in its upper and lower portions, passages extending from front to rear through its front and rear walls for forming parts of lines, a recess extending from front to rear of the section from one face thereof and beneath said passages for forming an end of a combustion-chamber, a water-containing chamber extending from front to rear of the section from the opposite face thereof, and shoulders provided upon the opposite side walls of the recess at one side of the water-containing chamber; of a gratebar arranged crosswise of the section within the recess and having its opposite ends supported by said shoulders projecting from the opposite side walls of the recess, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed section for a generator, the sauce consisting of a single casting provided with circulating-openings in the upper and lower portions of its rear wall, passages extending from front to rear through its front and rear walls for forming parts of flues, a recess extending inwardly from the rear face of the section beneath the passages for forming the front end of a combustion-chamber, a watercont-aining chamber of less thickness than the section arranged in front of the recess, and a second water-containing chamber arranged at the bottom and side edges of the recess and projecting rearwardly beyond the first water-containing chamber and communicating therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed section for a generator, the same consisting of a single casting formed with top and bottom walls extending toward each other in opposite directions from substantially their central portions, said section being provided with circulating-openings in the upper and lower portions of its rear wall, passages extending from front to rear through its front and rear wall for forming parts of flues, and a recess extending inwardly from the rear face of the section beneath said passages for forming the front end of a combustion-chamber, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed section for a generator, the same consisting of a single casting formed with top and bottom walls extending toward each other in opposite directions from substantially their central portions, and substantially fiat front and rear walls, the rear wall having circulatin g-openin gs arranged substantially centrally in its upper and lower portions, said section being provided with passages extending from front to rear beneath the upper circulatingopening through its front and rear walls for forming parts of dues, a recess extending inwardly from the rear face of the section between said passages and the lower circulating-opening for forming the front ends of a combustion-chamber and an ash-pit, the top wall of said recess being corrugated for forming a corrugated crown-sheet, a water-containing chamber of less thickness than the section arranged in front of the upper end of the recess, a second water-containing chamber arranged at the bottom and side edges of the lower end of the recess and projecting rear-wardly beyond the first water-containing chamber, fire and draft openings arranged one above the other between said passages and the lower circulating-opening and extending, from the recess through the front face of the section, and shoulders provided upon the opposite side walls of said recess for supporting a grate-bar, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, in the State of New Jersey, this 16th day of December, 1896.
