CABINET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,873, dated February 20, 1900.

Application led June l, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that LWILLIAM CARALE HUD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeneville, in the county of Greene and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Cabinets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention has relation to cabinets, and more particularly to that class of cabinets employed for the storage in a commercial form of lace, ribbons, and like goods that come in rolls.

With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved cabinet. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a lace or ribbon holder removed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged' transverse sectional View through the ribbon or lace holder when located within its compartment.

In the drawings, 1 denotes the body of the cabinet, divided into compartments 4t, each of which is adapted to contain a lace or ribbon holder 5. These lace or ribbon holders 5 each consist of a front piece 5a, having a longitudinal transverse slot o', the longitudinal walls of which are rounded or beaded, so as not to damage the lace or ribbon when drawn therethrough, two end pieces CL2, curved, as shown, and formed of spring metal, and a reel a3, having its ends a4 journaled in the spring side pieces and provided with frictional disks a5, which when the holder is inserted in the compartments of the case will be clamped by the spring sides of the holder to produce a friction, and thereby in the unwinding of the ribbon or lace check the impetus or momentum of the reel and prevent the unwinding of an excess amount of goods.

Any suitable means may be employed for securing the end of the ribbon or lace to the reel preparatory to winding it thereon. The preferred means, however, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which I have formed the reel with a longitudinal s1ot,through which the end of the ribbon or lace after itwhas been passed through the longitudinal slot in the front of the holder is passed. plying a crank or other suitable t-ool to one of the ends of the reel the goods may be wound thereupon.

The upper and lower edges of the front piece of the holder are preferably provided with a bead, which not only adds to the neatness of the cabinet, but also serves to prevent dust from working into the holder and damaging its contents.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation. It will be seen that by constructing the holder with spring sides not only is the movement of t-he reel checked in the unwinding of the goods and an excess amount of goods prevented from being rolled 0E, but the holders themselves are firmly held in position in the compartments.

While I have shown and described the preferred construction of my invention,I would have it distinctly 4understood that I do not wish to be restricted thereto, as many changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

In a cabinet of the character described, the combination with the compartments, of a holder consisting of a front piece, spring side pieces having outwardly-bent ends the energy of which is exerted to force them laterally and frictionally lock them to the sides of the compartments, and a reel journaled in said spring side pieces and provided with brake or frictional surfaces, whereby when the holder is-inserted into the compartment the spring-arms will subserve the double function of holding the holder in place and acting as a brake in the unwinding of the goods from the reel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
