SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,819, dated February 20, 1900. Application filed January 19, 1899. Serial No. 702,626. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM CHAMBERLIN HERBERT, a subject of Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain,residin g at Stanstead ,county of Stanstead, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldering-Irons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in soldering-irons, and has particular relation to that class which are self-heating.
One object of my invention is to provide a device of this character in which the soldering-point is heated by suitable means carried by the handle.
A further object is to provide a device in which suitable liquid is used to heat the soldering-point.
A further object is to provide a solderingiron with means for regulating the amount of heat passed to the soldering-point.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is neat and attractive in appearance, durable in construction, and which can be made at a moderate cost.
To these ends my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully desc'ribed,.and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the views, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved soldering-iron. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail of the gasolene-pan. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section showing the valve for injecting the gasolene. Fig. 6 is a vertical cross-section of the soldering-point. Fig. 7 is detail view of the plug-valve seat.
A designates my improved soldering-iron, comprising the soldering-point Cb, the injectortube a, the reservoir a and handle (0 The soldering-point Ct is provided with an integral rearwardly-extending flange forming an elongated opening a within the soldering-head. Suitable radially-extending openings a lead from the forward end of said opening a to allow of the passage of the flames from the opening, the latter forming the sole heatingchamber while the soldering-iron is in operation. By this construction it will be readily seen that inasmuch as the walls of the heating-chamber are integral with the solderingpoint a more rapid and equable heating will take place, as there is no break in the continuity of the heat-conducting metal, such as would occur in the use of a point removably secured'to the walls of the heating-chamber. The rear end of the flange is formed with an inwardly-extendin g annular flange having its inner periphery screw -threaded to receive the front screw-threaded end of the injectortube a, which is provided with radial openings a, arranged longitudinally thereof for the inlet of air. The injector-tube a is adapted to be removably secured to one end of a tube 07, which is connected to the reservoir a The tube a is provided with interior screw-threads a within which is adapted to be removably secured a plug-valve seat a to coact with a valve a located in said tube and having a rod connection extending rearwardly through the reservoir a and handle a the rear end being provided with an operating-wheel a. The rod connected to the valve a is provided with screw-threads, by
means of which the valve 0 when the rod is rotated by means of the operating-wheel a will cause the valve or to be moved into and out of engagement with the plug-valve seat a". Located on said rod in rear of said valve a is a suitable packing 00 which extends into the reservoir and which is adapted to feed by capillary action the gasolene or other fluid up to said valve and prevent any liability of any extra amount of fluid escaping from the reservoir during the operation of the device. The plug-valve seat a is provided with a central opening a, of small diameter for the passage of the gasolene or other liquid used into the injector-tube a, the opening a being opened and closed by the action of the valve a The reservoir (1 is provided with an inlet opening at, by means of which the gasolene or other liquid is passed into the reservoir, the opening being closed by a suitable cover a, the connection being preferably made by means of screw-threads. The cover a is provided with a horizontal opening a, by means of which a rod a, removably mounted in the handle a placed therein, Will serve to tighten the cover a or aid in removing it. A gasolene-cup a is removably mounted on the tube a for a purpose hereinafter described.
The operation of the device is the following: The reservoir a having been filled with gasolene or other suitable liquid which when combined with air will produce a vapor, the valve a being closed, the valve a is then opened, allowing a portion of the gasolene to pass from the reservoir through the passage (1 into the injector-tube a, and from thence through the air-inlets a into the cup a", after which the valve e is closed. The gasolene in the cup ct" is then lighted. The injector-tube becomes heated, as well as the plugvalve seat a". The valve e is then opened and the gasolene comes in contact with the heated pl ug-valve a and passes into the injector-tube a, Where it is combined with the air entering through the openings (L6, forming Vapor, which when ignited is driven into the cylindrical opening a and forms an intense heat therein, causing the iron to be quickly heated.
It will be apparent that the soldering-point can be used while the vapor is passing into the opening and that by moving the position of the valve a the amount of gasolene or other liquid passing into the tube a can be regulated, thus keeping the soldering-point at any desired temperature.
It will be readily seen that each and every part of the soldering-iron can be readily removed, the iron as' a whole being arranged in such manner as to be readily taken apart and secured together, by means of which the device can be readily cleaned and all deposits which necessarily result from the burning of the hydrocarbon oils be readily removeda desirable quality in a device of this character. In addition to this the parts can be readily renewed at a moderate cost.
The advantages of this construction are many and include the simplicity of its operation, the durability of its construction, its compact form, and its moderate cost of man ufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A soldering-iron, comprising a reservoir adapted to contain vaporizing fluid; a cylindrical extension formed at one end thereof; a removable plug-valve seat, having a central opening, mounted at the end of said extension; capillary-feeding material located within said reservoir and extending into said extension contiguous to said opening; a removable gasolene-cup mounted on said extension; an injector-tube, having radially-extending openings, removably secured on said extension; a soldering-head, having an integral rearwardly-extending annular flange removably secured on said tube, said flange having openings extending radially and in series from the forward end of the opening formed within said flange; a handle removably secured to the opposite end of said reservoir; and a rod adjustably mounted in said handle, and extendingthrough said reservoirand said extension, the front end of said rod having a needle-valve adapted to cooperate with the opening in the plug-valve seat, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
