Description

gutter: tats/s g strut @ffirp GEORGE N IMMO, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 64,352, dated April 30, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF FIRE-BRICK.
6H1: fitlgrb'nlc ufurct It in il ltst itcttrrs ilntcnt mu mating part if fig: same.
T0 ALLWHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Be it known that I, GEORGE Nnmo, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey,
hare invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful improvement in Composition for FircvBriek, Furnace-Linings, Pots, Rctorts, Scc; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip- 7 tion of the said invention, and of the features which distinguish the same from the compounds heretofore employed.
In the manufacture of fire-brick it has been usual heretofore to employ a peculiar quality. or cla Known as fire-clay, because it is of a consistence and qualityadapting'it to withstand high degrees of heat. These bricks are very often rapidly destroyed by the heat of steel and other furnaces. In the consumption of fuel the earthy portions that remain in the form of ashes, clinker, or cinder:,.'l1a.ve been exposed to a higher degree of heat than the linings of the furnaces in which such fuel is consumed, hence the combustible portions of the fuel are consumed, and the residuum is of a character adapted to withstanding almostauy degree of heat without rapid ehangenr destruction.
The nature of my invention or discovery therefore COilSlSLS in the employment of the ashes or other residuum of the combustion of 06:11 as the basis for the manufacture of fire-bricks, furuacc'liniugs, pot-s, Sic, said material being of a character the best adapted to withstanding an intense heat. In order to employ this material I mix therewith a sufficient quantity of clay,'or of clay and fine sand, to cause the particle's of ashes or other coal residuum to adhere together, and I mould the same into the desired shape. It will be understood that the more intense the fire is from which the residuum is talien the better the composition will. be for withstanding high temperatures, and, according to thecondition of thatfresiduuui, so the some vmay be made use of without sifting, or it may require to be ground as well as sifted previous to mixing with theclay.
What I claim, and desirc to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment of the residuum of the combustion of coal as the base or principal component in the immufacture of fircbricks, retorts, furnace-linings, pots, and similar articles, as and for the purposes specified,
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signaturethis 5th day of February, A..D'.i1S6T.
' GEORGE Nl-MMO.
