SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,527, dated February 13, 1900.

Be it known that we, WILLIAM BRINSON ORR and CHARLES KINesLEY'BooTH, of Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Rotary Balance-Valve, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved rotary balance-valve which is simple and durable in construction, readily applied to any engine having an ordinary reciprocating slide-valve, and arranged to reduce friction and wear to a minimum and to increase the effective power of the engine.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of our invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the base-plate. Fig. 5 Ban enlarged sectional plan view of the packing for the rotary valve. Fig. 6 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 6 6 in Fig. 5, and Figs. 7 and 8 are perspective views of the packing-plates.
The improved rotary balance-valve is provided with a steam-chest A, having a baseplate B, a casing O, and a cover D, fastened together by bolts E, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings. On the base-plate B, within the steam-chest A, is secured a valve-seat F fora rotary valve G, mounted to turn in said valve-seat and having a shaft H extending through one side of the casing G, to the outside thereof, to carry at its outer end an arm I, connected by a link J with the mechanism for imparting a rocking motion to the shaft H and the valve G.
In the base-plate B are arranged the inletports a b and the exhaust-port c, registering with similar ports d e f, respectively, in the bottom of .the seat F, and ports g and h are arranged in the sides of the seat F to open into the interior of the steam-chest A, as is plainly in dicated in Fig. 2. In the peripheral surface of the rotary valve and at the sides thereof are arranged the inlet-cavities t' i, of which the cavity 11 is adapted to connect the ports g and d a with each other for admitting steam to the left-hand end of the cylinder by way of port a, and the other cavity 2" is adapted to connect the ports h and e b with each other to admit steam to the right-hand end of the cylinder. On the bottom of the valve G is arranged the exhaust-cavity j for alternately connecting the ports d and c with the ports f for exhausting the steam from the cylinder, and this cavity j is connected by an aperture j with a peripheral cavity j, formed in the top of the valve G and closed at all times by the segmental cap F, bolted or otherwise fastened to the seat F.
In order to prevent leakage of live steam into the cavity j, the peripheral surface of the valve G between the cavities is provided with transverse recesses G, each containing a packing-plate G2 and a spring G as is plainly indicated in Fig. 5, the valve being also provided near its ends with transversely-extending recesses G for containing packing-plates G and springs G The springs G and G serve to press the plates G G outward in frictional contact with the cap F to prevent leakage,and the longitudinal recesses G open at their ends into the transverse recesses G and the ends of the strips of the plates abut against the inner faces of the plates G so that the valve is packed in every direction.
In order to prevent leakage around the shaft H, we provide the same with a collar K on the outside of the steam-chest, said collar extending into the inner end of a stuffing-box L, and said collar presses against a ring N, rounded ofi on the outer face to fit the correspondinglyrounded inner wall on the stunting-box to pre vent leakage of steam at this point.
The extreme outer end of the shaft H engages a bearing 0, set in a bracket P, attached to the base-plate B. Now when the valve G is rocked the transverse packing-plates G do not quite reach or come to the side edges of the cap F, but remain at all times in contact with the under surface of the cap, and hence the valve is balanced, as the plates cut off steam for the top surface of the valve and which surface corresponds approximately to the lower valve-face. Any steam leaking past the strips can pass by way of aperture 3' to the exhaust-cavity j and out.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A rotary balance-valve comprising a steam-chest having a base-plate a casing and a cover, the said parts being fastened together, a valve-seat secured on the base-plate within the steam-chest, the said valve-seat having inlet-ports and an exhaust-port in its bottom registering with similar ports in the base-plate, and side ports opening into the interior of the steam-chest, a segmental top or cap for the said valve-seat and a valve mounted to turn in the said seat and having an exhaust-cavity, side cavities and a top cavity, the top cavity being closed by the segmental cap, the said top and exhaust cavities being in communication with each other, substantially as shown and described.
2. A rotary balance valve comprising a steamchest, a segmental valve-seat in the said chest and having side ports opening into the steam-chest, an exhaust-port and cylinder-ports, a segmental top or cap for the said valve-seat, and a valve mounted to turn in the said seat and having an exhaust-cavity, side cavities and a top cavity, and transverse spring-pressed packing-plates in the said valve and in contact with the under side of the said cap, the plates being arranged between the side cavities and the top cavity, substantially as shown and described.
3. A rotary valve, provided in its periphery with longitudinal and transverse recesses, springs in said recesses, and packing-plates in said recesses, substantially as shown and described.
4:- A rotary valve, provided with a shaft, a collar secured thereon, a stufling-box for said shaft and said collar, and a ring loosely on said shaft and pressed by said collar in the stuffing-box, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a rotary balance-valve a steam-chest, a casing for the same, a valve-seat for the steam-chest, a rotary valve mounted to turn in said seat and provided with a shaft extending through one side of the casing, a collar secured on said shaft, outside of the steamchest, a stuiiing-box for said shaft and collar and a ring mounted loosely on said shaft within the stuffing-box and engaged by said collar, the said ring having its outer face rounded off to fit the correspondingly-rounded inner wall of the stufiing-box, substantially as shown and described.
