Nrrnn STATES FRANK BURNS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAND PROPELLING MECHANISM FOR BOATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,464, dated February 13, 1900.
Application filed September 21, 1898. Serial No. 691,493. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia,
boat by simply mounting the propelling attachment in the usual sockets for the oarlocks, as fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a boat, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged end view of a portion of the propelling mechanism. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the rear guide for the propeller-shaft; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of a boat, showing my improved propelling mechanism arranged on both sides of the same.
A isa boat having two sockets a a on each side and of the ordinary form adapted to receive oar-locks. insert in each forward socket the pin 12 of the driving-head B. 7 On the driving-head is a standard I), having the bearings 19 for a shaft 0, and on one end of. this shaft is a crank 0, having a handle 0, and on the opposite end of the shaft is a bevel gear-Wheel 0 which meshes with the bevel-pinion d on the propeller-shaft D. This propeller-shaft is adapted to bearings e e, the bearing e being loosely mounted on an extension of the shaft 0, while the bearing 6' is mounted on a spring-support e pivoted to the base of the driving-head B.
In order to protect the person propelling the boat, I inclose the gear-wheel c in a circular case J of any suitable design.
In order to hold the propeller-shaft D lat erally, I mount in the rear oar-lock socket the pin '5 of a guide I, having a slot i, through which the propeller-shaft D passes. This guide, with the bearings e 6, tends to retain the propellers in position laterally.
On the lower end of the shaft D is a propeller D of any suitable construction, and inclosing the propeller is a cage d.
If the boat should be propelled intoshallow water, the propeller would not dig into the river-bottom, but the cage would simply rest on the bottom and the lower end of the propeller-shaft would beraised, as the spring 6 I remove the oar-locks and allows of vertical movement of the shaft, and the rear bearing being slotted allows freedom of motion in a vertical direction.
There is one of the propelling devices at each side of the boat, so that a person sitting in the forward thwart can'propel the boat by the two propellers mounted on each side thereof.
The propelling mechanism can be readily removed from the boat and applied thereto without having to adjust the parts.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination of a boat having sockets at the gunwale, with a detachable propelling mechanism having pins adapted to the sockets at one side of the boat, said propel ling mechanism consisting of a driving-head, a shaft and a propeller, substantially as set forth.
l 2. The combination of a boat having sockets at the gunwales on each side thereof, with two independent propelling mechanisms, each mechanism consisting of a driving-head, a shaft, a propeller and a rear guide, said driving-heads and guides having pins adapted to the sockets on the gunwales, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in propelling mechanism for boats, of a frame adapted to be secured to the gunwale of the boat, a shaft in said frame, a crank on said shaft, a bevelwheel also on the shaft, a propeller-shaft having at one end a bevel-wheel meshing with the bevel-wheel on the crank-shaftand having at the other end a propeller, said shaft having a pivot-bearing and a spring-supported bearing, substantially as described.
a. The combination of a boat having sockets in the gunwale thereof, a driving-head adapted to the forward socket,-said driving head consisting of a frame having a crankshaft, a propeller-shaft adapted to bearings on the frame and having a bevel-pinion meshing with the bevel-wheel, a slotted guide adapted to a socket and through which the propeller-shaft extends, substantially as described.
5. The combination in driving mechanism for a boat, of an inclined propeller-shaft, a propeller at the lower end of the shaft, a cage inclosing said propeller, and a bevel-pinion on the opposite end of the shaft, a frame adapted to be secured to the gunwale 0f the boat, a crank-shaft on said frame, a bevel- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speeificatian in the presence of wheel on the crank-shaft meshing with the two subscribing witnesses. bevel-wheel on the propeller-shaft, a slotted guide for the propeller-shaft, and a springsupported bearing for the upper end of the propeller-shaft, substantially as described.
