Description

NiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRIS ZIAS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,441, dated February 13, 1900.
Application iiled October 16,1899. Serial No. 733,721. (No model.) i
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIS ZIAS, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State ofV Pennsylvainia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brushes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a device for firmly connecting the working face or bristles of a brush with the body thereof, as will be hereinafter described, and the novel features pointed out in the claims that follow the specification.
Figure l represents aY side elevation of a brush embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section thereof. Fig. 4 represents a top View of a portion thereof. Fig. 5 represents a top or plan view of a portion of a brush with a piece thereon for covering the binder of theV bristles or working face'of the brush'.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body or back of a brush, and B the handle thereof, both of usual construction. In said back, on the outer and inner faces thereof, are longitudinally-extending grooves or recesses C and D, the recess D receiving the bent ends of the tufts or bunches of bristles E and one limb of the U-shaped binder F, which is formed, preferably, of two or more lengths of twisted wire, between which lengths of one limb the bends of thetufts lor bunches of bristles are held. The binder continues around the front end of the back A and has its other limb seated in the outer recess D. The two limbs of the binder F are connected by the stringers G, theinner ends of which are passed around the bends of the tufts or bunches of bristles and also around the inner limb of the binder, the stringers extending through openings Hin the back and having their outer ends lpassed around the outer limb of the binder and clenched or otherwise tightly fastened, thus firmly securing the bristles and binder with each other and with the back.
If desired, the outer limb of the binder may be covered with a strip or piece J of paper or other material and thus concealed, as shown in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Abrush consisting of a back, brush material and a U-shaped binder, one limb of the latter engaging said material on the inner face of said back and Athe other limb being seated on the outer face of said back, said limbs being connected with each other by means of stringers on said back, the same eX- tending from one limb of the binder to the other and being secured to each of the same.
2. In a brush, a back with grooves therein on opposite faces thereof, a U-shaped binder having its limbs occupying said grooves, brush material connected With said back by the inner limb of the binder, and stringers passing through said back and secured to the opposite limbs of the binder.
3. In a brush, a backing having grooves in the inner and outer faces thereof, a U-shaped binder havingits limbs respectively seated in said inner and outer grooves, brush material secured to the inner limb of the binder in the inner groove of the back and stringers on said back secured to the inner limb of the binder and extending to and being connected with the outer limb thereof.
HARRIS ZIAS.
