To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WATSON BIRDSALL RULON and JOSEPH SWIFT KEEN, J r. citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Incandescent Lamps,which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of an incandescent lamp for burning hydrocarbon oil or other fluid wherein provision is made for inclosing the greater portion of the vaporizingtube for conveying the hydrocarbon within a suitable casing consisting of the burnertube, whereby the latter has a double function, Serving both as a mixing orvcommingling tube for conveying the vaporized hydrocarbon and air to the point of ignition and also as a covering or casing for that portion of the hydrocarbon-tubes which has heretofore been exposed, one of said tubes being provided with a device for supporting the burner-tube, whereby a simple and practical device is produced which cannot readily get out of order.
It also consists of an improved construction of generator and superheater which has an inlet-tube which carries the supporting means for sustaining the burner-tube in position,whereby the number of parts is reduced to a minimum and the burner is greatly simplified.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of an incandescent lamp embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the generator and superheater removed, showing also the means for supporting the burner-tube.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates an incandescent lamp, the same consisting-of an upright tube B, which serves as an inlet for the hydrocarbon and is provided with the lug 0, having a recess '1) therein, upon which rests the lower portion of the mixing and burner tube E, the latter having a cap F at its upper portion, provided with the gauze G, through which pass the generator H and superheater P and serves to hold the same in position. Said generator and superheater are contained within the mantle J and serve as a support for the latter.
The generator H consists of the body K, located at the upper end of the tube E and extending above the same and having a screwplug or closure L at the lower portion thereof, into which the inlet-pipe B leads, the upper portion M of said pipe extending within the generator and being provided with perforations N and the closed top P. i The upper extremity of the generator H is of reduced area and has leading downwardly therefrom a tube P, the upper portion of which serves as a superheater and is deflected at its lower portion, as indicated at Q, having a plug R at the end and provided with an outlet-port S, through which vapor is discharged into the lower portion of the mixing-tube E, especial emphasis being laid upon the fact that both the inlet-tube B and the downwardly-extending tube P are contained for a greater part of their length withinsaid mixing and burner tube, whereby the latter serves both as an air and gas or vapor mixing tube and also as an inclosing casing for the pipes leading to and from the generator and superheater, whereby a maximum quantity of heat units is contained within the tube E, and thus exert their heating or vaporizing effect upon the conveying-pipes for the kerosene or suitable hydrocarbon and the hydrocarbon gas. T designates a suitable valve with a union connection at its discharge end and upon which the pipe B and its adjuncts are supported, said valve having leading thereto a pipe U, which conveys the kerosene from the tank V, the latter being provided with a lower pressure-gage XV and having the pipe Xleading thereinto from the compressed-air reservoir Y, which latter is provided with the highpressure gage S and the inlet-pipe A.
B designates a reducing-valve or pressureregulator which is located in the pipe ,X intermediate the tanks Y and V and regulates the pressure on the kerosene in the tank V The Operation is as follows: The tank Y? filled with air under high pressure, which is conducted by the tube X into the oil, kerosene, or other suitable hydrocarbon tank V, the flow of said airbeing regulated by the reducing-valve B in its passage through said pipe X, thereby producing an even pressure on the oil, kerosene, or other suitable hydrocarbon under all conditions in the said tank V. The oil, kerosene, or other hydrocarbon is now conducted through the pipe U into the tube 13, the passage therethrough being controlled by a suitable valve T, said tube B conducting the oil, kerosene, or other suitable hydrocarbon into the generator H, where it is volatilized and passes therefrom through the superheaterp', which conducts the said vapor downwardly to the opening S, where it discharges into the tube E, where it commingles with the airand is conducted to the gauze G, at which point ignition takes place. The tube IE, it will be noted, serves both as a mixing-tube for the vapor and air and also as a casing or covering for the greater portion of the hydrocarbon and hydrocarbon-vapor conveying tubes at the points where protection is most needed, the expanded head of which serving as the burner-head.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an incandescent lamp, an inlet-tube forconveyinghydrocarbon to the generator, a mixing and burner tube having an open lower end, a device on said inlet-tube for sustaining the burner-tube, a generator into which the upper portion of said inlet-tube extends, a superheater connected with said generator formed of a tube leading downwardlyand an outlet for said tube.
2. In an incandescent lamp, a mixing and burner tube, a generator, an inlet-tube extending into said generator and a device on said inlet-tube for sustaining said burnertube, the latter being detachable from its support, and adapted to be withdrawn by a longitudinalmovement from said generator and inlet-tube.
3. In an incandescent lamp, a mixing and burner tube, a generator, an inlet-tube extending into said generator and having perforations in the sides thereof, a device on said inlet-tube for sustaining said burnertube, a closure for the lower end of said generator and a superheater leading from said generator and adapted to conduct hydrocarbon vapor therefrom.
4. In an incandescent lamp, a mixing and burner tube, an inlet-tube passing within said burner-tube for conveying hydrocarbon to the generator, means on said inlet-tube for sustaining said mixing and burner tube, a generator into which a portion of said inlettube projects, a closure for said generator nd a superheater leading from said generttor downwardly within said mixing and urner tube.
5. In an incandescent lamp, a mixing and burner tube, a generator, an inlet-tube having one end extending into said generator and provided with perforations and a closed end, a closure for the lower end of said generator, a superheater leading from said generator downwardly, said mixing and burner tube being adapted to contain a major portion of said inlet-tube and said superheater, and means for holding said generator and superheater in position.
6. In an incandescent lamp, an inlet-tube for hydrocarbon, a mixing and burner tube, a supporting device on said inlet-tube and carrying said mixing-tube, a generator supported on said inlet-tube, the latter discharging into said generator and having a closed top and perforated sides, an outlet-tube serving as asuperheater leading downwardly from the top of said generator and extending within said mixing and burner tube, said outlettube discharging into the lower extremity of the latter.
7. The combination ofa burner-tube, a gen erator, an inlet-tube projecting into said generator having perforations, a superheaterleading downwardly from said generator, a device on said inlet-tube for sustaining said burner-tube and a gauze on said burner-tube which is adapted to hold said generator and said superheater in position.
8. In an incandescent lamp, a high-pressure tank, a reservoir, a connection therebetween, an inlet-tube leading from said reservoir, a generator into which a portion of said inlet-tube extends and is provided with per forations, a superheater leading from said generator downwardly, and a mixing and burner tube which is adapted to contain a major portion of said inlet-tube and said superheater, a gauze for said mixing and burner tube, a cap on said mixing and burner tube adapted to hold said gauze,- the latter being adapted to hold in position said generator and superheater.
9. In an incandescent lamp, a high-pressure airtank,a kerosene-reservoir,a reducing valve between said tank and said reservoir, an inlet-tube connected with said reservoir, a valve controlling said inlet-tube, a generator oommunicatin g with said inlet-tube, a portion of the latter extending thereinto and provided with perforations and a closed end, a closure for the lower end of said generator connected with said inlet-tube, a superheater leading from said generator downwardly, an outlet therefor, a mixing and burner tube which is adapted to contain a major portion of said inlet-tube and said superheater, a gauze for said mixing and burner tube, a cap. on said mixing and burner tube adapted to hold the latter, the said gauze being adapted to hold, in position, said generator and superheater.
10. In an incandescentlamp,an open-ended mixing and burner tube, a generator supported in the upper portion thereof and extending above the same, an inlet-tube within said mixing and burner tube and a tube serving as a superheater leading from said generator downwardly Within said mixing and burner tube, and having an opening for discharging at a point below the open end, said mixing and burner tube being detachable from its support and adapted to be Withdrawn from said generator and superheater in a longitudinal direction.
11. In an incandescent la1np,an open-ended mixing and burner tube, an inlet-tube entering the lower portion of the latter, a generator located at the upper portion of said inlet-tube, a superheater leading downwardly from said generator, extending within said mixing-tube and discharging into the lower portion thereof, and a support for said mixing and burner tube, the latter being detachable from its support, and adapted to be withdrawn by a 1011- gitudinal movement from said generator and superheater. 4

In an incandescent lamp, a mixing and burner tube, an inlet-tube, a generator communicating therewith, a superheater connected with said generator,said mixing and burner tube being detachable from a support and adapted to be withdrawn by' a longitudinal movement from said generator and super heater.
13. In an incandescent lamp, a mixing and burner tube, an inlet-tube, a generator communicating therewith, a superheater communicating with said generator, a support for said mixing and burner tube, and means for supporting said generator and superheater, said mixing-tube being detachable from its support and adapted to be Withdrawn by a longitudinal movement from said generator and superheater.
14;. In an incandescent lamp, a mixing and burner tube, an inlet-tube, a generator communicating therewith, a superheater connected with said generator,said mixing and burner tube being detachable from a support'and adapted to be withdrawn by a longitudinal movement from said generator and superheater, in combination with a fluid-supply tank, a high-pressure air-tank and a reduc ing-valve between said tanks.
