BLIND-SLAT ADJUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,361, dated February 13, 1900. Application filed December 14f1899. Serial No. 740,337. (No model.)

Beit known that I, JOHN R. MORGAN, a citi zen of the United States, residing at St. Louis,
in the State of Missouri, have invented a new lto operatively connect the device to the slatrod, so that the latter may be conveniently adjusted independently of the device, which may be readily brought into use for locking the Slat-rod as adjusted.
Vith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement oi'a parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the ac-y companying drawings,and particularly pointed outin the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of `the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective `view illustrating the application of the present device to a blind and holding the slats closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof and showing in dotted lines an adjusted position of the device. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views of the respective members of the attachment. Fig. 5 is a transverse horizontal sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the guide-pin carried by the slatmod.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the lower end rail of an ordinary blind having the usual pivoted slats 2, which latter are operatively connected by a slat-rod 8. These parts are of any preferred construction and are shown to more fully illustrate the application and operation ot' the invention.
The present attachment comprises opposite members 4 and 5, each being in the form of a substantially L-shapedlplate provided with an arcuate slot. 6, extending into both arms of the plate. Projecting outwardly from the inner vertical edge of each plate is a liat attaching ear or wing 7, provided with perforations for the reception of suitable fastenings 8, whereby the members may be connected to the outer side of the end rail l, and with the upper transverse arms extending inwardly across and resting upon the upper edge of the rail. The opposite edges of each slot 6 are reinforced by outwardly-directed and parallel flanges or ribs 9. As indicated in Figs. l and 5 of the drawings, it will be seen that the members 4 and 5 are spaced laterally, so as to receive the lower end of the Slat-rod 3.
Fitted to the lower end of the slat-rod is a metallic socket l0, which is open at its upper end, so as to receive the rod, and the latter is connected to the socket by means of a transverse fastening 11. Projecting laterally outwardly from the upper end of the socket is a thumb-piece l2 for operating the Slat-rod, so as to tilt the slats upon their pivots. Extending transversely through the lower end of the Slat-rod and the socket is a pin 13, which projects at opposite sides of the rod, and its 0pposite projecting ends form guide projections or lugs slidably received Within the arcuate slots of the respective members 4 and 5. This guide-piu is provided with an intermediate notch 14, which snugly receives the lower end of the slat-rod, so as to prevent turning of the pin. By reason of the arcuate form of the slots 6 the slat-rod may be moved vertically and outwardly in the usual manner when it is desired to tilt the slats and Without any interference whatsoever by the members 4 and 5.
I-lingedly connected to the outer edge of one of the members, as 5, is a substantially L'- shaped plate 16, which is foldable inwardly and against the outer face of the member 5. An arcuate series of perforations or openings 17 is formed in this plate and adapted to be alined with the slot 6 in the adjacent mem ber when the plate is folded against the latter, so as to receive the pointed end 1S of the pin 13 within one of the openings, and thereby hold the slat-rod against accidental movement. When it is desired to adjust the slatrod, the plate 16 is swung outwardly, so as to be disengaged from the pin 13, and the rod may then be freely adj usted and engaged with any one of the openings in the locking member. To facilitate the operation of the locking member 16, the latter is provided at its outer edge with a lug 19, forming a thumbpiece, whereby the locking member may be conveniently moved upon its hinge connection.
What I claim is* 1. The combination with a bli-nd, having pivoted slats, and a Slat-rod, of a guide for the rod, a laterally-projecting pin or lug carried by the slat-rod, and slidably engaging the guide, and a manually-operable locking device carried by the guide and having a plurality of adjustable engagements with the pin or lug.
2. The combination with a blind, having pivoted slats, and a Slat-rod, of a guide having a slot, a lateral guide projection carried by the slat-rod, slidably received within the slot of the guide, and projecting at one side thereof, and a hinged locking device carried by the guide, and provided with a plurali-ty of perforations for adjust-ably receiving the pin or lug.
3. The combination with a blind, having pivoted slats, and a Slat-rod, of opposite lguide members receiving the Slat-rod therebetween, and having corresponding arcuate slot-s, opposite laterallyprojecting guide -lugs provided upon the Slat-rod and slidably received within the respective arcuate slots, and a hinged locking device carried by one of the guide members, and adjustably engaging one of the pins or lugs.
4. The combination with a blind, having pivoted slats, and a Slat-rod, of a pair of opposite substantially L-shaped guide members receiving the Slat-rod therebetween, having attaching wings or ears for application to the blind, and also provided with corresponding arcuate slots, opposite laterally-projecting guide-lugs carried by the slat-rod,and slidably :received in the respective arcuate slots, and a substantially L-shaped locking device hinged to one of the guide members, and having an arcuate series of perforations adj ustably receiving the adjacent pin or lug.
5. The combination with a blind having pivoted slats, and a Slat-rod, of a pair of opposite substantially L-shaped guide members, receiving the slat-rod therebetween, the vertical inner side of each member being fitted against the lower rail 0E the blind, the horizontal portion extending transversely across the upper side of said rail, and each member also having an arcuate slot extending into both portions thereof, guide-lugs projecting at opposite sides of theslat-rod, and slidably received in the respective arcuate slots, one of the lugs projecting outwardly beyond the adjacent guide member, and a substantially L-shaped locking-plate hinged to said adjacent guide member, foldable against the outer side of the latter, and provided with an arcuate series of perforations corresponding to the arcuate slots of the members, and adjustably receiving the adjacent guide-lug.
6. The combination with a blind, having pivoted slats, and a Slat-rod, of a pin, having an intermediate notched portion snugly receiving the lower end of the slat-rod, and the opposite ends of the pin projecting at opposite sides of the rod, a socket embracing the lower end of the slat-rod and hold-ing the pin in place, opposite guide members receiving the Slat-rod therebetween, and provided with corresponding slots receiving the respective ends of the pin, and a locking device hinged to one of the guide members and adj ustably engaging the adjacent end of the pin.
7. The combination with a blind, having pivoted slats, and a slat-rod, of a pin projecting at opposite sides of the Slat-rod, a socket embracing the lower end of the Slat-rod and holding the pin in place, and also provided With an outwardly-directed thumb-piece, opposite guide members provided with corresponding slots receiving the respective ends of the pin, and a locking device hinged to' one of the guide members, and adjustably engaging the adjacent end of the pin.
8. A blind attachment, comprising opposite substantially L-shaped members, having outwardly-directed attaching wings or ears located at the inner sides of the vertical portions thereof, and also provided with corresponding arcuate slots, a pin for application to the Slat-rod of the blind, and having its opposite ends slidably received within the respective arcuate slots,one end of the pin projecting outwardly beyond one of the members, and a substantially L-shaped lockingplate hinged to the outer edge of the latter member, having an arcuate series of perforations for adjustable engagement with the adjacent projecting end of the pin, and also provided with an operating thumb-piece.
