To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LNATHANIEL H. BLEDsoE,
' enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in burners for petroleum or other fuel-oil.
The principal object of my present invention is to provide an improved burner for fueloils, adapted to be employed with safety and convenience in sad-irons, so constructed and arranged that the pressure or supply of the vapor generated from the fuel-oils is regulated and controlled at its entrance to the burner and is provided with a vapor-chamber in which the graphite, paraflin, or other insoluble substance is deposited and retained instead of passing through the contracted outlet-port and continually clogging the same, and therefore requiring a needle-valve to keep the said port clear while in use.
My invention consists of a chambered casting in which are detachably mounted one end of the supply-pipe, a hollow inlet-valve, a screw-threaded nipple having an outlet-port communicating with the chamber in which the said 1inlet-valve is arranged, and a screwplug closing the chamber in which the said nipple is arranged, and a pendent cup or open-topped receptacle fixed to the lower face of my invention.
The novel features of myinvention are the manner and means for controlling or regulating the pressure of the fuel-vapor in the burner, means for relieving the fuel-vapor of its paraffin or graphite or other insoluble ingredients, and the means for conveniently cleansing the said burner. v
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a perspective view of my improvement, showing the arrangement of its parts relative to the burner and the fuel-supply pipe. Fig. 3 is also a longitudinal section of my invention, showing the inlet or supply valve closed. Fig. 4 is a similar view to Fig. 3, showing a modified form of my inlet-valve seat. Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged detail views, in longitudinal section,of the inlet-valve,show ing slightly-modified forms. Fig. 7 is a detail of the hollow screw-threaded nipple by which the fuel-vapor is discharged into the burner. Fig. 8 is a modified form of this nipple.
The casting l, of any desired contour, dimensions, and material, has two chambered portions 2 and 3, connected by a conduit 4 of reduced diameter and arranged one above the other, as shown, and is provided with an overhanging shield and a pendent liquid-receptacle. The portion 2 has two screw-threaded openings in approximate longitudinal alinement, whose inner ends are connected by an inlet port or conduit 5, Fig. 2. In one of the screw-threaded openings is mounted by a screw-threaded connection a fuel-su pply pipe 6, Whose outer end is connected in any proper manner to a proper source of supply. (Not shown.) In the other one of said openings is arranged by a screw-threaded connection a hollow screw-plug or inlet-valve 7, whose inner end is adapted to tightly it a proper seat at the adjacent end of the said inlet-port 5. I preferably secure such a vapor-tight. fit by providing a conical seat and making the inner end of said valve 7 correspondingly beveled, as shown in Figs'. 2 and 6. This valve 7 has a central chamber 8, which may be confined to the inner end of said valve, `as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5, or it may be eX- tended to the outer end of said valve, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, and have its outer end closed by a proper screw 9, and whose inner end communicates with the said port 5 by means of the port l0. In this chamber 8 is arranged a proper quantity of asbestos or other proper substance, adapted to receive and retain the graphite or other insoluble matter in the fuel-vapor which isA generated in the said pipe 6 from the fuel-oil therein. The rear endof the said portion 2 has opposite lateral apertured ears 12 for securing my improvement in position and has an integral horizontal or overhanging plate 13 forthepurposehereinafterdescribed. Adjacent to the inner end of the said portion 3, properly separated therefrom, is arranged the burner 14, consisting of a metallic tube having a series of radial pcrforations for the escape of the fuel-vapor therefrom. The portion 3 has a vapor-chamber 15, communicating with the said chamber of the valve 7 by means of the said conduit 4 and has in its outer end a screw 1G, which forms a vaportight plug. In the inner end of this chamber 15 is mounted a screw-threaded plug 17, whose outer reduced end 18 snugly fits the correspondiugly-reduced inner end of said chamber 15, Fig. 2. This screw-plug 17 has a contracted longitudinal central opening 19, which forms an outlet-port for the burner.
By the above described construction a proper air-chamber 2O is formed between the burner 14 and the said eduction-port 19. Directly below this air-chamber 2O is arranged a shallow cup-like plate or receptacle 21, which is preferably integral with the said casting 1 or rigidly xed thereto for the purpose presently to be described.
In Fig. 8 is shown a modilied form of the said screw-plug 17, which consists of three integral parts-an external projecting portion 22, adapted to be seized by a proper operating-tool, a central portion 23, adapted to close the outer end,of the said chamber 15 by a screw-threaded connection, and an inner reduced portion having its free conical end adjacent to a proper eduction-port 24 in the body of the said casting and leaving an annular space 25 in said chamber 15 for the free passage of the vapor from the inlet port or conduit 4.
The operation of my invention thus described is obvious, and, brieiiy stated, is as follows: When it is desired to light my improved burner, the operator withdraws the inlet-valve 7 from its seat over the inlet-port 5 by rotating the same, thereby admitting a small quantity of oil to the said receptacle 21 from the supply-pipe 6 through the said conduit 4, chamber 15, and port 19 by gravity. The said inlet-valve is then returned toits seat, thus shutting off the oil-supply. The oil in the receptacle 21 is then ignited, the Hanle from which fills the said air-chamber 2O and heats the pipe 6, thereby converting its liquid contents into a fuel-vapor. The
operator now opens the inlet-valve 7 sufficiently to permit the said vapor to freely enter the valve-chamber 8, the conduit 4, the chamber 15, and thence through the port 19 to the interior of the burner-tube 14, from whence itis fed to the iiame through the open- It is obvious that when the heated vapor from the supply-pipe enters the upper valve-chambers it will be projected against the asbestos in the chamber 8, and the insolubleingredients, like paraffin, will be retainedin the asbestos, which otherwise would pass downward through the conduit 4 and gradually clog the outlet-port 19 in the screwplug 17.
When it is desired to clean or clear my improvement of obstructing accumulation, it can readily and conveniently be done as follows: The valve 7 can be removed from its chamber by unscrewing it, and access to the interior chamber 8 thereof is afforded in the construction shown in Fig. 4 by removing the screw 9 therein, whereby the port 10 can be vcleaned and the asbestos contents be renewed at pleasure. To clean the outlet vapor-port 19, for which a needle-valve is commonly employed, the screw 16 is removed, when by means of a screw-driver in the .diametric slot in the head of the screw-plug 17 the plug 17 can readily be removed and cleaned at pleasure. Before removing the said plug 17 for the purpose of cleaning the same the operator closes the valve 7 by forcing it to its seat, thereby preventing any escape of the fuel-vapor. By the use of this plug the necessity of the usual needle-valve is obviated, which is very`desirable, for the reason that the needle is very frequently broken off in the port, causing the operator great trouble and inconvenience and completely deranging the burner.
It is thus obvious that in my improved burner the pressure or supply of the fuel-vapor can be conveniently and positively regulated when it leaves the supply-pipe and enters the burner, that the asbestos-chamber in the inlet-valve obviates the necessity of a needle-valve for the outlet vapor-port, and that all the operative parts are conveniently removable and accessible.
The shield protects overhanging parts from the heat and serves to direct the blaze to the said tube 6.
Having thus described my invention and the manner of employing the same, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination of a burner-casting having a iuid -receptacle and connecting chambers as shown, a fuel-supply pipe 6 and an inlet-valve 7 ,mountedin longitudinal alinement in the upper chamber, the inlet-valve 7 being adapted to close the inlet-port of the supply-pipe,and having an asbestos-chamber in its inner end as described; and the lower chamber provided with a removable screwplug having an outlet-port leading to thedcombustion-chamber, and removable means for closing the outer end of said lower chamber.
2. In a burner of the class specified, the combination of a chambered casting having a f nel-supply pipe fixed therein,and provided with a huid-receptacle as described; the upper valve-chamber in alinement with the said IOO IIO
supply-pipe, and a lower chamber communicating with both the valve-chamber and the combustion chamber as shown; a valve mounted in said upper valve-chamber, and provided upon its inner end with an asbestos-chamber for the purpose described: and
removable means for closing said lower chamber for the purpose of affording access thereto. 3. In a chamber of a burner of the class specified, an inlet-valve 7 adapted to regulate the fuel pressure or supply at the inlet-port, and provided With an asbestos-chamber in longitudinal alinement with the inlet-port of the pipe 6 for the purpose described.
