FRUIT JAB COVER FASTENING.
(Application filed Mar. 16, 1898.)
(No Model.)
tend to fracture the neck of the jar by any IIUOIAN G. THORP,
Erica.
PATENT OF AKRON, OHIO.
FRUlT-JAR-COVER FASTENING SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 642,886, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed March 16, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUCIAN G. THORP, a citizen of the United States, residin g at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Jar-Oover Fastenings, of which the following-is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in devices for securely fastening the tops of fruit-jars; and the objects of my invention are to provide a secure and easily-operated fastening that may be readily applied andremoved, shall securely seal the jar, will not excessive pressure or pressure that shall apply unequally to any part of the neck, and that shall simultaneously seal or release a vent in the cover to relieve the external airpressure and permit the cover to be easily taken off.
To the aforesaid objects my invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described and then specificallypointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views, Figure 1 is a jar-top in central vertical section illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view of one-half a jartop, showin g a different means of attaching the clamp; Figs. 3 and 4E, elevations of jar-tops, showing different methods of connecting the ends of the hoop; Fig. 5, a plan and edge ole-- vation of ahoop-blank, reduced in size, showin g the general shape of each and illustrating the hoop used with the device shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 6, another plan of uniting the ends of the hoop, the dovetail parts being held by solder.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the jar, and 2 the cover, in each of which views the neck is downwardly tapering. On the downwardlytapering neck I place a hoop 3 of sheet metal, also made tapering, and of such internal dimension as to encircle the smaller part of the tapering neck loosely and to meet and compress the larger part as it is raised. The ends of this hoop may be united in various ways, two forms of which are shown in Figs. 3 and Serial No. 674,011. (No model.)
4. In the manner shown in Fig. 3 the ends of the hoop are turned to form loops, and through these loops is passed a bent wire 4 and twisted together. In the second manner (shown in Fig. 4) the ends of the hoop are bent outwardly and perforated, and through these perforations the wire is passed and twisted, as in the former case. Other devices for unitin g these ends will readily suggest themselves to a mechanic, but from extensive experiments I prefer the forms shown.
'In each hoop in Figs. 1, 3, and 4, on opposite sides, a short cut 5 is made and the metal above it pressed outward sufficiently to form a pocket for the ends of the clamp, hereinafter described.
The clamp 6 consists of a bar of metal, preferably heavierat the center, and thence tapering toward each end, where it terminates in upwardly-turned hooks adapted to engage the upper edge of the cut 5. In the center of the clamp is a vertical screw-threaded orifice,
in which is fitted a thumb-screw ,7.
In the construction shown in Fig. 2 a small boss is pressed outward on each side of the hoop centrally perforated and the ends of the clamp 6 inserted therein. The hoop in this instance is that shown in Fig. 5 and when bent about the jar-neck the endholes register with each other and one end of the clamp passing through these holes serves the twofold purpose of retaining the ends of the hoop together and holding the clamp.
In the center of each cover 2 is a small orifice 8, about which is a circular recess adapted to receive a disk 9 of packing material, and on top of it a metal disk 10 to receive the thrust of the screw 7. By this arrangement the screw 7 not only serves to secure the jartop, but also to close the vent therein, and when the jar is opened the screw is released and the disk 9 removed, permitting air to enter, when the top ,is easily raised.
The edges of the cover and top are secured by a rubber gasket 11 common in such jars.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a jar having a downwardly-tapering neck and of a cover, of a hoop adapted to inclose the smaller portion of said neck and to compress the larger portion; having short longitudinal cuts on opposite sides, and having the metal above the cuts pressed outward to form pockets for the clamp-hooks, and a clamp adapted to pass over the jar-top, having hooks to engage the side pockets of the hoop; and a central screwthreaded opening, and a screw to fit said opening and press down the jar-top, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the jar having the downward-tapering neck; the hoop adapted to compress the larger portion of the neck and having side pockets; and the clamp having hooks to engage the pockets, and a screwthreaded central opening, and a screw fitted to turn in said opening, of a cover to fit said jar, having a central opening with a recess about it to receive a packing-disk to be compressed by said screw, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with the jar, the hoop adapted to encircle and compress the j ar-neck and provided with detachable fastenings at its ends; and means for engaging the ends of a clamp; of a cover to fit said jar; an orifice in the cover; a recess about said orifice to receive a packing-disk; a packi ng-disk to fit said recess; and a clamp having its ends adapted to engage the hoop, and having a central serew-threaded opening; and a screw fitted to turn in said opening and arranged to coinpress the packi11g-disk,snbstantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the aboveIhereunto set my hand.
LUGIAN G. THORP.
