ANIMAL-SHEARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,831, dated February 6, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, SAMUEL FENTON ALLEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Shears, of which the following is a complete specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
The object of my invention is to produce certain improvements in the construction of animal-shears whereby the facility of operation and the elhciency and durability of the machine are materially augmented.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is` a central longitudinal vertical section taken in a plane parallel to that in which the comb of the cutter is located, certain of the parts being shown in elevation. Fig. II is a view f similar to that shown in Fig. I, but taken at right angles to the plane in which that view is taken.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the bottom plate of the main frame of my machine, which is completed at one end by a comb-plate 2, projecting forwardly from a shoulder 3, and at the other end with a rearwardly-extending grasp or handle 4.` The handle 4, being adapted to accommodate a movable part, is preferably provided with terminal internal flanges 5 and 7 and an intermediate internal iiange 6. The several flanges are provided with coaxial bores adapted to receive and fit a sleeve 8, which, extending from the iiange 5 through the iiange 7, projects about one-third of its entire length beyond the latter. The sleeve 8 is provided at its opposite extremities, respectively, with terminal bearings, preferably bushings 9 and 10, each preferably having an external annular flange 11. The bushings revolubly support a shaft 14, that carries upon one end an eccentric head 15 and upon the other and preferably threaded end 16 a gear 17. The gear 17 works against a washer 18, that encircles the shaft 14 and, projecting into an internal annular recess 19 in a collar 20 upon the sleeve 8, serves to revolubly retain the collar in position upon the sleeve. The gear 17, being screwed to the threaded end 16 of the shaft 14, acts not only as a gear, but also as a nut for assembling the parts specified in the manner described. By the removal of the gear 17 the parts secured thereby maybe readily disassembled.
The gear 17 is adapted .to cooperate as a crown-gear or at any angle from a right angle, as a beveled gear with a corresponding gear 21, carried, as upon a power-shaft 22, within a frame 23, that is hinged, as indicated at 24, to the collar 20. The hinges 24 permit relative swinging movement of the collar 2O and frame 23, while the revolubility of the collar 20 upon the4 sleeve 8 independent of the movement of the shaft 14 affords free movement of the frame of the machine about the axis of the shaft 14 through manipulation of the handle 4.
The sleeve may be secured within the handle 4, as by a series of screws 25, screwing through threaded apertures in the handle and flange y6 and engaging, as by abutment, with the wall of the sleeve 8. One of the series of screws 25, specially indicated by the reference. numeral 26, is couically pointed and pierces the wall of the sleeve 8. This arrangement besides contributing to the security of union between the handle 4 and the sleeve 8 affords a suitably-closed oil-hole, through which alubricant maybe supplied to the oilchamber 28, defined within the sleeve 8 between the opposite ends of the bushings 9 and 10. The chamber 28 is also partially occupied by the shaft 14, which when the chamber is filled with a lubricant revolves Within it and has its bearings constantly supplied from this abundant source.
The presence of a lubricant-chamber is an important feature in machines operated at so high a velocity as machines of this class are operated; but the important feature of my invention in this respect is the location of the lubricant-chamber within the handle in such a manner as to practically prevent all leakage of the lubricant therefrom. l
The plate 1 is preferably bounded upon opposite sides by side walls 30, which are preferably surmounted by a cap-plate 31. The
cap-plate should constitute a rigid part of the machine, and for that purpose may be secured to the side walls 30, as Well as to the inner face of the handle 4, as by a plate consisting of a continuation of the plate 31, bent at right an- IOO gles thereto. The plate 31, besides affording in conjunction with the plate l and side pieces 30 a box for certain of the working parts of the machine, is designed to ailord a support for a vibrator-pin 34, that will render said pin relatively rigid and immovable with respect to the frame of the machine. The pin 34 may consist, essentially, of a headed bolt having a reduced threaded end 35, passing through an aperture inthe cap-plate 3l and secured in place by a nut 36, screwing on the threaded end 35. As its name suggests, it is designed to support the vibrator 37, and its mounting above described is designed to sustain the great wear and strain to which the vibrator is in practice subjected. The vibrator is provided with a sleeve 38, that fits the pin 34, about which it oscillates. The sleeve 38, with the vibrator, extends from the face of the plate l to the bottom of the cap-plate 3l.

countersunk in the face of the plate l and which, surrounding the pin 34, supports the vibrator 37. The vibrator 37, as will appear from a comparison of Figs. I and II, is essentially an oblong member projecting in opposite directions from the sleeve 38. It carries upon its rearward and curved jaws 4l, between which works with a vertically-reciprocatory and laterally-oscillatory movement a cylinder 42, that is supported upon an eccentric stud 43, projecting from the face of the eccentric head l5. The cylinder 42 is provided with a transverse aperture to receive the stud 43. Vith said aperture communicates upon opposite sides flared or funnelshaped recesses 44. One of these recesses in operation is designed to carry a quantity of lubricating material and feed it as required to the stud 43. By the employment of the two recesses 44 the cylinder may be set in four different positions upon the stud, and thereby equally distribute the wear upon the bearing parts with which it cooperates.
Upon the end of the vibrator opposite the jaws 4l I provide a pair of lugs 45, between which, as upon a screw 46, is pivoted a tension-lever 47, that is provided with an apertured lug 48, fitting between the lugs 45 and pierced by the screw 46. The tension-lever 47 is secured at its forward end, as by screws 50, to a cutter 5l, that reciprocates across a comb 52, secured, as by screws 53, to the comb-plate 2. The rearwardly-extending end of the tension-lever 47 is provided with a collar 54, having an elliptical or oblong aperture encircling the sleeve 33. The longer diameter of the aperture 55 being disposed lengthwise of the tensionlever47 permits a limited movement of said lever upon its pivotscrew 46. The shorter diameter of the aperture 55 is such as to cause it to tit snugly upon the sleeve 3S and to assist the lugs 45 and 46 in rigidly securing the tension-lever 47 to the vibrator 37.
Immediately in rear of the lugs 45 I provide a plate or bridge 56, which, secured to the comb-plate 2, as by screws 57, serves to confine the vibrator snugly against the face of the comb-plate during its Vibratory movements. Immediately' in therear of the bridge 56 I provide a tension-screw 5S, screwing through a threaded aperture provided for it in the tension-lever 47 and abutting against the face of the vibrator 37. The movement of the screw 53 serves to regulate, through the tension-lever 47, pressure of the cutter 5l against the comb 52. I prefer to have the screw 53 extend through an aperture 59 in the cap-plate 3l and to provide it, above the cap-plate, with an enlarged head 60, notched, as indicated at 6l, around its underside, said notches being adapted to engage with a spring plate or pawl 62, rising from the cap-plate 3l, to which it is secured, as by screws 63.
rlhe method of manipulating and adjusting the several parts above described has been incidentally pointed out in the specification, and the operation of the machine does not therefore appear to require to be further enlarged upon in this specification, addressed as it is to those skilled in the art to which this invention belongs.
What I claim isl. In a shearing-machine, the combination with a frame comprising a hollow handle, of a sleeve within the handle, rotatory shaft carried in terminal bearings Within the sleeve, a lubricant-chamber within the sleeve between said bearings, a screw-hole, and conical aperture through the handle and sleeve, respectively, and a conicallypointed screw working therein, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a shearing-machine, the combination with a frame, rotatory shaft, head upon the shaft, and eccentric stud upon the head, a
` vibrator movably secured to the frame, jaws thereon in proximity to the head, and a cylinder bored to fit the stud and provided with opposite funnel-shaped recesses com municating with the bore, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a shearing-machine, the combination with a frame, rotatory shaft, head upon the shaft and eccentric stud upon the head, a vibrator movably secured to the frame, jaws thereon in proximity to the head, and a cylinder bored at right angles to its axis to tit the stud, and provided with opposite coaxial funnel-shaped recesses comm unicating with the bore, substantially as set forth.
4. In a shearing-machine, the combination with a frame provided with side pieces and a cap-plate surmounting the side pieces. of a pin, rigidly and independently secured as to its opposite ends, in the frame and cap-plate respectively, a vibrator, movable upon said pin, and vibrator-actuating mechanism, substantially as set forth.
5. In a shearing-machine, the combination with a frame, vibrator, and vibrator-actuating IOC) IIO
mechanism, and a tension-lever ixedly fulcrumed, near its middle part, to the forward end of the vibrator, and an abutment screwthreaded to the tension-lever and abutting against the vibrator, substantially as set forth.
6. In a shearing-machine, the combination with a frame, vibrator-pin, and vibrator provided with a sleeve upon said pin, of a tensionlever pivoted to the forward end of the vibrator provided with a collar having an oblong aperture encircling the sleeve of the vibrator, and an abutment screw-threaded to the tension-lever between its pivotal connection with the vibrator and its collar, and abutting against the vibrator,substantially as set forth.
7. In a shearing-machine, the combination with a frame, vibrator and pair of lugs upon the forward end of the vibrator, of a tensionlever provided with a lug fitting between the lugs upon the vibrator, a pivot-screw uniting said lugs, an additional rearwardly=-disposed connection between the tension-lever and the vibrator, and tensionregulating mechanism carried on the tension-lever, and coperating against the Vibrator,substantially as set forth.
8. In a shearing-machine, the combination with a frame, vibrator-pin, and vibrator comprising a sleeve working upon said pin, of a tension-lever pivoted to the vibrator, a collar provided with an oblong aperture encircling the sleeve of the vibrator, side pieces, and a cap-plate upon the frame surrounding the rearward end of the vibrator, a screw carried upon the tension-lever, abutting against the vibrator, and extended through an aperture in the cap-plate, a head upon said screw, teeth upon said head, and a spring-plate secured to the frame,anddetachably engaging saidteeth, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
