Description

UNrTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR MANNERS, OF HULL, ENGLAND.
INHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,748, dated Februaryv 6, 1900.
Application filed February 23, 1899. Serial No.706,463. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LARTHUR MANNEEs,a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Hull, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thil invention relates to inhalers, and has more particular reference to an inhaler provided with an eXhaling attachment which is also adapted as a nose connection therefor.
Reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my device, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof on the line 2 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A is a tube composed, preferably,of rubber or glass and provided at one end with a contracted portion B, which is designed as a connection with a gas-supply tube or bag or other source of medicated vapor. At the junction of said tube A and the contracted portion B'is an enlargement forming a valvechamber for a ball-valve D, which is adapted to close the connection between the tube A and contracted portion B. The end E of the tube A is adapted as a mouthpiece therefor. Connected with the tube A near the end E thereof is a communicating tube F, which ranges obliquely upwardly at such an angle as to be capable of easy insertion into the nose when the mouthpiece E is inserted in the mouth.
Two bulbous enlargements G and H are formed in the tube F, of which the lowel` one, G, forms a valve-chamber for a ball-valve J, adapted to close communication between the tubes F and A. The enlargement H is designed as a receptacle for medicated cotton or other similar substance, and the outer end K of the tube F is adapted to be inserted into the nose.
The tube F is preferably oval or flattened in cross-section, so that the ball-valve J may be rolled down out of engagement with its valve-seat by simply tilting the tube F.
It is evident thatif the mouthpiece E is inserted between the lips and the end K of the tube F be inserted in one of the nasal passages and the lungs be expanded air or vapor will be drawn through the tube A into the mouth or lungs, the ball-valve D, as shown in Fig. l, rolling into the enlargement C and opening communication between the tube A and extension B. Reversely, the ball-valve Jwill be drawn into its seat,as shown in Figl. If now air or vapor be expelled from the lungs through the mouthpiece E and the tube A, the valve D will close and the valve J open, forcing air or vapor into the nasal passages through the end K of the tube F and carrying into them the vapors of any medicated cotton which may be in the enlargement H. Due to the oval cross-section of the tube F the valve J may when desired in the manipulation of the device be rolled out of the seat by tilting the tube F. t
By fitting a flexible tube to the tube F and inserting the end of the same into the outer ear air may be forced into the ear and into contact with the parts thereof, and the device may also be used to clear the frontal sinuses and Eustachian tube, the gist of the invention lying in the two tubes and two valves and their method of coperation.
It is evident that many changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacriiicing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An inhaler, comprising a main tube provided at one end with a mouthpiece, and at the other end with an inwardly-openin g valve, a branch tube communicating therewith adjacent said mouthpiece, and projecting obliquely 4'therefrom toward said mouthpiece aud provided with a medicament-receptacle, an outwardly-opening valve mounted in said branch tube between said medicament-recep tacle and said main tube, said branch tube being also provided with a bulbous portion in which said outwardly-opening valve operates, and is retained from said medicamentreceptacle, substantially as shown and described.
2. An` inhaler, comprising a main tube provided at one end with a mouthpiece and at IOO the other end with a contracted portion, an inwardly-opening valve mounted in said main tube adjacent said contracted portion, a branch tube communicating with said main tube adjacent said mouthpiece and ranging upwardly at an angle thereto, and provided with au outwardly-opening valve, a medicament-receptacle, a bulbous portion between said medicament-receptacle and said main tube in which said outwardly-opening valve operates, and an end portion adapted to connect with the nose, substantially as shown and described.
3. In an inhaler, a tube elliptical in crosssection and provided With a bulbous enlarge- I 5 ment, an internally-circular portion in Which said bulbous enlargement terminates, and a ball-valve operating Within said bulbous enlargement, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 10th day of February, 1899.
ARTHUR MANNERS.
