TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JABEZ K; BABCOCK, of Shortsville, Ontario county, New York, have invented a. new and improved Hay and Manure Fork; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being" had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention consists in having a ferrule provided with a solid head, which has holes drilled in it to receive the tines, the latter being secured in the head of the ferrule by means of keys or pins, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a tine, in case of breakage,- maybe readily detached, and a new one inserted in its place. In the accompanying sheet of drawings, i I
Figure 1 is a faceor front view of my invention, with a part of the ferrule head in section.
.Figure 2,4:1-n edge view of the same, with the ferrule and head bisection longitudinally.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a ferrule, which is provided with :1. head, B. This head is solid, and is cast with the ferrule A; malleable cast iron will probably be used. The head B has holes, a, drilled in it to receive the'tines G, these being shown in fig, 1, which represents a hay fork. These holes extend longitudinally into the head, nearly to its inner end, and holes are drilled transversely through the head, between the fines, to receive keys or pins, D, the latter crowning or hearing against the tin es-- the portion of'them within the head-and holding them securely therein, as will be fully understood by referring to fig. 1. i
The advantages of this invention consist, first, in the-facility with which a broken tine may be removed and replaced by a new one, all that is required being to drive out the key or pin which bears or presses against it, when the tine can be readily drawn out; second, there is no tang to enter the handle of the fork, and conseduently the former is not weakened at its most vulnerablepart; third, cheapness of construction, the welding of tines being avoided, and-the head and ferrule cast in one piece, which maybe obtained by the quantity, malleableize'd, for a; small sum. I i
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The ferrule A and head 13- east in one piece, with holes drilled longitudinally in the head to receivethe tines, and holes drilled transversely through the head for the keys or pins D, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. 7
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 26th day of February, 1867.
JABEZ K. BABCOCK.
