UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO OTTESON AND MARTIN OTTESON, OF MENOMONEE FALLS, WVISOONSIN.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,709, dated February 6, 1900.
7 Application filed February 3, 1899. Serial No. 704,381. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Orro OTTESON and MARTIN OTTESON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Menomonee Falls, in the county of Waukesha and State of VViscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention has for its object to provide simple economical pipe-wrenches having the advantages hereinafter set forth; and said invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts specified with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Referring by letter to the drawings, we show the stock or hand-lever portion of our Wrench provided with a partly depending rigid jaw B at its forward end, the working face of this jaw being transversely serrated. The jaw B extends laterally from both sides of stock A and projects a certain distance be low the same.
Loose on the stock A is a slide 0, having a depending lug I), provided with a tapped aperture engaged by a screw D, the head 0 of which turns in an under side notch d of said stock and has a forwardly-extending center stud e rotative in a corresponding rear recess in the jaw B aforesaid. The slide is provided with a pair of upwardly-extending ears f, and in pivotal connection with these ears is the shank g of the movable jaw E of the wrench, the working face of the latter jaw being transversely serrated. to bite in an opposite direction from the opposing stationary jaw. A bolt h is the preferred pivot for the jaw-shank g, and this being the case a nut 71 is employed in connection with the bolt. As herein shown, the rear end of jaw-shank g is made narrower than the remainder of said shank in order that the latter may have a greater range of movement than would be otherwise the case against a spiral spring F under tension between said rear end of the aforesaid shank and the slide 0, above speci- The screw D is operated to adjust the slide 0 on jaw A, and thereby the distance between the fixed jaw B and movable jaw E is regulated. The wrench being set for a certain size of pipe, it may be used to operate upon a coupling or a next larger size of pipe without resetting, owing to the fact that the distance between jaws increases as the movable one is swung outward, this being one of the advantages of said wrench. It is also to be observed that as the movable jaw has a greater range of movement than is usual in pipewrenches there is no liability of slip, because the grip of the jaws tightens in proportion to the power exerted on the stock.
The movable jaw being readily detachable from the stock, the wrench may be easily repaired in case said movable jaw is broken,
and it is possible to provide a set of movable jaws with one stock.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y The combination of the stock having a for ward under side notch and a partly-depending rigid jaw adjacent to the notch provided with a rear recess, a slide on the stock provided with a pair of upper ears and a lower lug having a tapped aperture, a screw engaging the lug-aperture, a head on the screw engaging the stock-notch, a center stud on the screw-head engaging the jaw-recess, another jaw having a shank in pivotal connection with the slide-ears, the rear end of this shank being narrowed back of said ears, and a spiral spring under tension between said slide and narrow end of said shank.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands, at Menomonee Falls, in the county of Waukesha and'State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
