Be it known that LnAnLns i. SEsrER,-a.; citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improveniente i-n Force-Feed Mechanism for Grain-Drills and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others xo skilled in the art te which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of force-feed mechanism for grain-drills; andthe' object of the intention is to provide, in combination with a hopper andatwe-part seed-cup secured thereto,a con rugated seed-wheel, a hollow cylinder having a reduced annular bearing fitting Within one z 5 ther object in inelosing the spring is to provide suiicicnt room on the shaft between the seed-cups for the carrying of necessary parts thereon, the manner in which these springs have heretofore been carried cramping the parts, and the pressure is not as direct as in this instance upon the annularbearing', holding the same in close proximity er in a bearing position to the corrugated wheel, whichwill prevent any seed or grain, however small,

That my invention may be more fully undei-stood, reference ,is had to the accompanylng drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a portion of the hopper, cup, and force-feed mechanism applied thereto. Fig. 2 vis a vertical cross-section through the cylinder.
In the drawings, A represents a section of a hopper provided with-the aperture a.
B is a seed-cup secured to the hopper in any suitable manner and communicates with the aperture a in the hopper. A number of these cups are provided at intervals the length of the hopper and depend therefrom. 'lhc said cups are composed of the parts D b' and have a suitable discharge-opening'h;which connects with' the vgrain-shoes.
G is a longitudinally-carried rectangular shaft movable in its .length and is adaptedto pass through the successive seed-cups.
D is a luted orcorrugated cylinder seedwheel having the hollow portion d and the inelosed end d', provided with a rectangular 6o opening through which the shaft C extends. The manner ot' carrying and rotating said seed-wheel is common .to those now in use.
, E is a cylinder in diameter equal to thediameter ofthe seed-wheel and has a splineand-groove connection with the part b of the seed-cup. The cylinder is further provided with the reduced annular bearing e, itting in one end of thegfluted seed-wheel. Theshaft C, passing through. the cylinder, extends through an annularY perforation in the bearing e, which enables the cylinder through this and the spline-and-groove connection with the part b' to remain stationary as the seedwheel is rotatedl through the shaft C.
F is a coil-spring carried around the shaft C within the cylinder and abutting at one end against a ring or disk f, carried on the shaft and bearingagaiust the annular bear-r ing e, the other end being held in proper position by means of the yielding plate f', slidable in the cylinder, the cylinder and seedwheel being held in proper relation on the shaft by means of the cotter-pins g. Thus K it Will be seen that by iuclosing the spring I obviate the necessity of cramping the mechanism carried ou the sh'aft and apply the pressure at the desired point on thoannular bearing, holding the cylinder always adjacent to and abutting against ythe seed-wheel, preventing any grain or seed from lodging between the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is@- 95 1. In a force-feed mechanism for graindrills, the combination with the seed-cup and corrugated seed-wheel, a hollow cylinder carried adjacent to said seed-wheel andhaving a spline-and-groovc connection.y with said seed-cup, of a eoil-springinclosed within said cylinder adapted to abut against the end thercot' adjacent to the seed-wheel and retain the saine 'in such bearing position and the ICO disk f' shiftable with shaft C, and adjustable within the cylinder, all substantially as described and shown. y y
2. In a force-feed mechanism for graindrills, the combination with a seed-hopper and the two-part seed-cups b, b', carried thereby, acorrugated seed-wheel mounted upon and shiftable with shaft C, rotating in said seed-cup, of the cylinder E,.provided with the reduced annular bearing e, fitting in one end of the seed-cup and having a bearing relation therewith and a spline-and-groove connection with the part b', of the seed-cup, coilspring F, carried around the shaft C, within `the cylinder and abutting against the annular bearing e, and the disk f', shiftable with the shaft and adjustable Within the cylinder closing the same and forming a stop for spring F, all substantiallyas described and shown.
3. In combination with the shaft C, and iluted or corrugated seed-wheel D, a hollow cylinder having a bearing relation with said seed-wheel and shaft, and provided with ayielding or adjustable inclosing meniber, a coiled spring inclosed Within said cylinder adapted to abut against the end thereof adjacent to the seed-wheel and retain the same in such bearing position, all substantially as specified.
4. The combination with the seed-wheel D, and the cylinder E, provided with the reduced annular bearing e, fitting in one end of the seed-wheel, and the shiftable disk f", closing the outer end thereof, a pressurespring inelosed within the cylinder E, as
specified, the tension thereof adapted to be increased or decreased by the adjustment of the yielding disk f, substantially as dei scribed and shown.
5. In combination with shaft C, and Iiuted or corrugated seed-wheel D, the hollow cylinder E, provided with the reduced annular neck e, having a bearing relation with the seed-wheel ,and shaft, the disk f, shiftable with shaft and adjustable in the cylinder' and a coiled spring inclosed within said cylinderI and abuttingr against the end thereof adjacent to the seedwheel compressed or relaxed through the movement of the disk, all substantially as described and shown.
6. The combination with the seed-wheel D, and the'cylinder E, provided with the re duced annular bearing e, bot-h mounted upon and shiftable with shaft C, fitting in one end of the seed-Wheel, of the shiftable disk ff, carried at a fixed point on shaft C, closing the open end of and adjustable with cylinder E, and the coil-spring F, inclosed within the cylinder and abutting against the end thereof adjacent to the seed-Wheel and against the disk and compressed or relaxed through the movement of the disk with the bar as the said bar presses the disk into the cylinder against the spring to move the cylinder and seedwheel or relaxes to permit the opposite shifting of said seed-wheel and cylinder, all substantially as described and shown.
