ATR@LZ% A TTOBNE) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY THAYER KINGSBURY, OF KEENE, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
TOY VEHICLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,525, dated January 30, 1900. Application filed October 10, 1899. Serial No. 733,172. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY THAYER KINGS- BURY, acitizen of the United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Cheshire, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Vehicles, of which the followingis a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to toy vehicles.
The object of the invention is to cheapen and simplify the construction of this class of toys by forming the sides'of the vehicle of two separate castings and the bottom from a struck-up sheet-metal plate, the bottom and sides having interlocking fastening devices for securing them together.
A further object is to provide the sheetmetal bottom with an upward extension at its forward end to constitute the front end of the vehicle; also, to provide its rear end with a depending series of integral steps; also, to form the rear-axle bearings integral with the cast-metal sides; also, to provide the castmetal sides near their forward ends with integral seat-standards which project through apertures punched in a seat struck up from sheet metal.
These objects I accomplish by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy vehicle in the form of a fire-patrol provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation or partial perspective of one of the sides of the vehicle detached. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the bottom, and Fig. 4 is a plan of the seat.
A A are the sides of the vehicle, formed of cast metal and having depending axle-bearings A A near their rear ends and provided at their upper edges, near their forward ends, with seat-standards A the upper ends of which terminate in securing-lugs a The sides A are provided at the juncture of the axle-bearings with slots (1. Beyond these slots at the sides are formed with upper and lower inwardly-projecting lugs 00 and a respectively, and the front ends of the sides are provided with inwardly-projectingflanges a and also with vertical slots a immediately behind these flanges.
B designates the sheet-metal bottom of the I vehicle, with its longitudinal side edges between the upper and lower lugs and a and having its forward upturned end I closing the space between the forward ends of the sides and there provided with two ears b,
which pass through the slots a and are.
clenched or bent over upon the sides A to as sist in holding them together. The upper portion of this front extension 1) is bent outwardly to form the footboard o The opposite edges of the bottomB are further provided with ears or lugs b which are passed through the slots at and bent down or upset, so as to form a strong connection at this point. It will be seen that the lugs 17 11 hold the sides against moving toward each other or apart and, in connection with the lugs (t and a serve to rigidly connect the body portions of the vehicle.
B designates the steps, formed integral with the sheet-metal body and struck up at the same time with the bottom.
0 designates the drivers seat, struck up from a single piece of sheet metal and formed I with end slots c,'through which project the lugs on the upper end of the seatstandards a D is the rear axle, provided with wheels, as usual, and E is the front axle, mounted in the rear ends of the thill-frame F, which frame is arched above the axle, as at F, and provided with a hooked pivot-lu g f, which passes through an aperture in the forward end of the bottom B.
The vehicle shown in the drawings is in the form of a patrol-wagon; but I desire it understood that the form of the vehicle is entirely immaterial, as the cast-metal sides and sheetmetal bottom, with interlocking connections, may be used in connection with toy vehicles of all sorts of shapes, as will be readily understood by those familiar with the manufacture of such articles.
The-method described of constructing the vehicle not only results in cheapening the same, but a stronger toy is produced than where the whole vehicle is formed of cast metal.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A toy vehicle having its body formed of cast-metal sides, a sheet-metal body having at upturned end closing the front of the body and interlocking connections between the sides and the bottom; substantially as described.
2. A toy vehicle having its body formed of sides, provided with seat-standards terminating in secnring-lugs, a sheet-metal bottom, interlocking devices securing the bottom and sides together, and a seat having end slots through which the said securing-lugs project; substantially as described.
3. A toy vehicle having its body formed of cast-metal sides, a sheet-metal bottom having an upturned forward end closing the space between the forward ends of the sides, an integral step at its rear end, and interlocking devices for securing the sides and the bottom together; substantially as described.
4. A toy vehicle having its body formed of sides provided with front and rear slots and formed along their lower edges with inwardly projecting upper and lowerlugs, and a sheetmetal bottom between said upper and lower lugs and formed at its opposite sides with front and rear lugs, or ears passed through said slots and upset or bent over; substantially as described.
5. A toy vehicle having its body formed of sides, having front and rear securing-slots,
integral rear-axle bearings and integral seatstandards terminating in securing-lugs and a sheet-metal bottom having an upturned forward end closing the forward end of the vehicle, opposite side lugs or ears passed through the said slots and upset or bent over, the rear end of the bottom terminating in a depending integral step, and a seat having end slots receiving the lugs on the seat-standards sub stantially as described.
6. A toy-vehicle body comprising two sides havinginwardly-projecting flanges a at their front ends, upper and lower inwardly-projecting lugs a a at the lower edges of the sides, and integral depending axle-bearings, the sides being also provided with slots a, a5, and the sheet-metal bottom with its side edges between the lugs a, a and formed thereon with outwardly projecting ears I) passed through the slots a and upset and the front extension I) behind the flanges a and having ears I) projecting through slots a, and upset; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
