PATENT HANDLE-BAR FOR VELOCIPEDES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 642,357, dated January 30, 1900.
Application filed July 20, 1899. Serial No. 724,485. (No model.) y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDERS GUs'rAn Trino- DOR OFVERSTRM, merchant, a subj ect of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Sundsvall, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steering- Bars for Velooipedes and the Like, (for which I filed application in Sweden the 1st day of May, 1899, under No. 7 65,) of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to steering-bars for velocipedes and the like, which bars generally consist of two separate parts which are removably connected to the stem ot' the steering-fork (fore-wheel fork) and which can be adjusted into different positions by being turned on their axes.
My invention aims to provide adjustable and removable steering-arms which are especially adapted to be used in velocipedes. The steering-bar arms hitherto commonly used in velocipedes are integral with one another and are inserted in a cross-sleeve, forming one piece with the stem of the steering' fork or firmly connected -to the same. According to this invention the arms of the bar, which are inserted in a cross-sleeve in the same manner as the arms of previous constructions, can be telescoped and are provided in their walls with one or more holes or perforations which correspond to one another when the arms are telescoped. In said holes enters a bolt or bolts actuated by a spring or springs and located in the stem of the steering-fork, said bolt or bolts serving to lock the arms in their adjusted position. By turning the steering-bar arms so as to cause the bolt or bolts to enter into holes having one position or another the arms can thus be locked in their different positions.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows in elevation Aa part of a steering device arranged according to this invention. Fig. 2 shows a section along the line 1 1 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a detail.
A and B designate the inner ends of the two arms of the steering-bar.
C is the tubular stem of the steering-fork,
and with the upper end of said stem is a crosssleeve D, united by soldering. Near the sleeve D is a piece E, lixed in the tubular stem C. A hole F is made through said piece and through the sleeve D. Below the piece E there is an annular piece G, fixed in the tube or stem O. A bolt or bar I, surrounded by a spiral spring H, is located in the tube or stem C and passes through the annular piece G, the reduced upper end J of said bolt or bar passing through the hole E in the piece E. A screw K enters into the tube C through a slot L in the wall of the tube and is screwed into the thick part of the bolt I near the reduced end or pin J. The one end ofthe spiral spring H rests against the screw K, while the other end of the same is supported by the annular piece G. By depressing the screw K the bolt I is moved downward in the tube C, and when the screwv is released the bolt returns to its original position, acted upon by the spring.
Near its one end the arm A is provided with three holes, the centers of which are located on the bow of a circle, and on a greater distance from said end there is a conical ring M,
which tapers in the direction of the end in question. The other arm B has acorresponding ring M. In the inner end of the arm B is fixed a tube N, having a less diameter than the arms A and B and provided with holes L', corresponding to the holes L.
When putting the parts together, the ends of the arms A andB are introduced into the sleeve D from opposite sides, whereby the tube N is passed into the arm A, the screw K being depressed during this operation. This being made, the arms A and B are so adj usted that when releasing the screw K the pin J enters into a pair of the holes L and L', thereby looking the arms A and B in position. By depressing the screw K and by turning the arms A and B the pin J can be caused to enter into another pair of holes, so that the arm of the steering-bar can be kept in different positions.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a stem C, of a perforated piece E and an annulus Gfxed therein, In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed a cross-sleeve D secured thereto, a handlemy name in the presence of two subscribing bar A having a conical ring M, and a series Witnesses.
of holes, an arm B having a conical ring M. ANDERS GUSTAF THEODOR FVERSTRM. 5 and a tube Nprovided with holes, a bolt I in Witnesseszn the stem, and a spring H engaging the said O. A. ASTRM,
bolt. AUD. ENGSTRM.
