ADVERTlSlNG-REFRlGERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,917, dated January 23, 1900.
Application filed June 28, 1899. Serial No. 722,171. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREEMAN N. YOUNG and FRANCIS E. THOMPSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising-Refrigerators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an advertising-refrigera tor, the advertising feature of the refrigerator being due to its shape. The apparatus is intended to be usedin the business of retailing a certain beverage by the glass. The beverage is put up in bottles of a certain shape and is more palatable when kept on ice. For the purpose of thus keeping the beverage and at the same time of advertising it we propose to make a refrigerator in the form of a bottle in which the beverage is sold, but of sufficiently large dimensions to contain a quantity of ice, a number of bottles of the beverage, and, if desired, a number of drinkingglasses in which the beverage is sold to customers. The intention is to place this refrigerator upon shop-counters, at proper locations upon the street, or at any other desired place where it will be in plain sight of the public and where it may be in the care of an attendant who will dispense the beverage.
The apparatus is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the refrigerator; Fig. 2, a vertical section thereof, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section.
As above stated, the refrigerator is in the form of a bottle of large dimensions. The body portion A is preferably of papier-mach or some other light and impervious material adapted to hold ice and water, the body being hollow for this purpose. The upper portion of the body is. tapered into a neck b, closed at the top by a suitable cap I), the whole structure-body, neck, and oap being of the same shape and proportions as a bottle in which a certain beverage is sold, the particular beverage intended to be used in this instance being moxie. For advertising purposes one side of the bottle, which we will call the front, will be provided with a laparts, the joint occurring in a horizontal plane at the point where the body commences to narrow into the neck. The neck portion will preferably be removable in order to quickly charge the body portion with ice and the bot tles of beverage and also for the purpose of cleaning the interior.
The drinking-glasses in which the beverage is sold should be kept cool, and for this purpose we have arranged in the neck portion of the refrigerator a rack. 6, provided with a number of hooks, on which the glasses or mugs may be suspended. The neck portion may be removed from the refrigerator and placed upon the ground or other support without removing the glasses, since they will be held above the lower edge. When the parts are assembled and the refrigerator is equipped for dispensing the beverage, the glasses can be easily reached through the doors a in the same way that the bottles of liquid are reached. The bottles containing the beverage (moxie) are sealed by a wellknown kind of metal cap, an imitation of which is shown at b, and for removing this cap it is customary to use a small lever having a ring at one end adapted to fitover the cap and engage its edge, whereupon the cap can be lifted. Forconvenience we have shown such a ring f permanently attached to the exterior of the refrigerator. By thrusting the top of the bottle into this ring and engaging the cap the latter may be easily removed.
As it is the intention to distribute these refrigerators among retail dealers in beverages, it is the intention to prevent its use as a water-cooler or a tank for lemonade or other drinks in bulk by coating the inner walls with a paint or material which will give an objectionable flavor to any liquid placed in the refrigerator in bulk. Hence it can only be used to contain liquids or materials contained in other packages, such as the bottles described.
The refrigerator may be lined with a harmless preparation containing sassafras or any other strong-flavored material solvent in water which will impart an unusual taste to the water.
Having described our invention,we claim 1. An advertising-refrigerator consisting of a box or casing in the form of a bottle, the body portion having a door or doors and adapted to'contain ice and material to be kept cool, and the neck portion being separable from the body portion and provided with
