Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST KON OW FLEISOHER, OF OHRISTIANIA, NORWAY.
JOINT FOR RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,851, dated January 23, 1906. Application filed October 14,1899. Serial No. 733,639. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
v Be it known that I, AUGUST KONOW FLEISCHER, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Eilert Sundts gade 31, Ohristiania, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Rails, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a raiLchair of such a constructionas to hold the proximate rail ends in suspension, so to speak. To this end the chair has a bearing surface on opposite sides of a recess or depression in said chair over which said rail ends project. In practice I prefer to sink the bearing-surfaces below the upper face of the chair, thus providing abutments for the feet of the rails and preventing lateral displaceinent, the rail ends being fished or otherwise jointed and braced to the chair by any desired or well-known means. A
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the proximate ends of two railway-rails, the tie and chair being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1, taken on line a: w'.
In the above figures, a indicates the tie or sleeper, and c the chair, having bearing-surfaces c 0 respectively, on opposite sides of a recess or depression 11, over which the proximate ends of the rails b b project when se-' cured to-the chair 6 in any well-known or pre-' ferred manner.
The bearing-surfaces c c are preferably formed below the upper face of the chair, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to hold the rail ends against lateral displacement, and said rail ends maybe fished or otherwise jointed or braced and secured to the chair in any well known or preferred manner.
In practice I prefer to construct the chair as shown and described in my application for patent of even date with this, Serial No. 733,640.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A rail-chair provided with a bearing-surface on opposite sides of a recess formed in said plate, over which recess the rail ends project, when in position on the chair, said bearingsurfaces sunk below the upper face of the chair to lock the rail ends against lateral displacement, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST KONOW FLEISCHER.
