Be it known that I, BENJMAN W. POWELL, a citizen of the United States,residin g at I-Iartwell, in the county of Hart and State of Georgia', have invented a new and useful Heel- Bolt, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to a novel combined heel-bolt and colter for plows.

The object of the invention is to provide a heel-bolt capable by the simple reversal of its position of accomplishingthe adjustment of the plowshare.

Considered in its specific aspect, the object of the invention is to so form a reversible heelbolt that its front edge will in either position constitute a colter the cutting edges of which will extend continuously in a quadrantal curve from the face of the share to the front edge of the standard or foot of the plow.

Referring to the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views illustrating the application of my invention and showing it in its reversed positions; and Fig. 3is a perspective View, on an enlarged scale, of my combined heel-bolt and colter detached.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the lower end of the standard or foot of a plow, composed, as usual, of parallel plates 2, and 3 indicates the'shovel or share, provided with a square aperture 4 for the reception of the heel-bolt 5. The bolt 5 comprises a square shank 6, designed to be passed through the opening 4. and between the plates 2 of the standard. At one end the shank 6 terminates in a reduced threaded bolt 7 for the reception of a securing-nut 8, designed to be screwed upon the bolt and against the rear face of the standard. From the end of the shank 6 opposite the bolt 7 extends a right angular colter 9 the outer edge of which, extending continuously from the point 11 of the colter to a point at the rear side of the shank 6 in alinement with the rear or inner face or edge of the colter, .is sharpened to form a knife-edge 12. From the rear edge of this colter extension projects what may be termed a square locking-lug 13, parallel but not longitudinally coextensive with the shank 6, the distance between the contiguous faces of the shank and lug being substantially identical with the distance between the upper edge of the opening 4t and the adjacent edge of the share 3. This colterblade projects at opposite sides of the shank 6, the portion carrying the locking-lug 13 being the longer. The shorter portion 15 has its rear face flattened, and the rear face 16 of the opposite end of the blade, between the extremities 11 and the locking-lug 13, is also flattened, and either one or the other of these flattened faces is adapted to fit flush against the front side of the share and below the opening 4: therein, so that the colter is firmly braced at its lower end in either position of the device. Thus it will be seen that the rear edges at the opposite extremities of the colter provide stop shoulders for engagement with the outer face of the plowshare for the purpose of bracing the colter in its two positions. Furthermore, it is preferable to flatten the portion 17 of the rear edge of the colter between the locking-lug 13 and the shank 6, so that this portion also may fit flat against the outer side of the share, whereby the colter has a comparatively long bearing against the share.

When my combination heel-bolt and colter is employed to retain the share 3in its upper adjustment or elevated position, the shank 6 is, as heretofore stated, passed through the opening t in the share and the colter is turned up to permit the locking-lug 13 to assume a position immediately above the share and between the plates of the standard, thus serving to prevent slight twisting or turning of the heel-bolt, which would result in the derangement of the share. In this position of the parts the arc-shaped edge 12 of the colter extends continuously from the face of the share to the front face of the standard. If now it is desired to lower or depress the share, the heel-bolt is passed between the plates of the standard, with the colter turned down, and the lug 13 is passed into the aperture 4. In this position of the parts the knife edge of the colter will extend continuously from the face of the share to the front edge of the standard, and the flattened rear face 16 of the outer end of the longer portion of the blade fits evenly against the outer face of the share and effectually braces the colter.

WVhat I claim is 1. A heel-bolt comprising a shank and a colter extending at substantially .right angles thereto, said colter being provided with a locking-lug, and with a knife-edge extendin g continuously between points in alinement with its rear edge, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A heel-bolt, comprising a shank, a colter extending at opposite sides and at substantially right angles to the shank, the rear edge of the colter being fiat, and the opposite front edge being formed into a knifeedge, and alocking-lu g projecting rearwardl y from the rear edge of the colter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A heel-bolt, comprising a shank, a colter-blade extending at substantially right angles to the shank, and having its outer edge formed into a knife-edge, a rearwardly-extending locking-lug projecting from the rear edge of the colter, and stopshoulders located at opposite ends of the colter-blade and projecting in opposite directions from the shank and the locking-lug respectively, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A heel-bolt comprising a squared shank, a colter extending at right angles thereto and having a straight rear edge, and a curved front edge having both terminals in alinement with the rear edge of the colter, a squared locking-lug extending from the rear edge of the colter, and a flattened edge formed at the rear edge of the colter and extending from its point to the locking-lug, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. A heel-b0lt,comprisinga shank and locking-lug of similar transverse dimensions, and a colter having a regularly-curved sharpened front edge terminating beyond the looking-lug, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

6. The combination With a plow-standard, of a share provided with an angular opening, a reversible heel-bolt comprising a shank and locking-lug designed to interchangeably engage the aperture in the share, and a colter having a continuously-curved and sharpened front edge extending in either position of the heel-bolt from the face of the share to the front edge of the standard and said colter being provided-beyond the locking-lug with a flat edge along its rear face, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
