SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,745, dated January 9, 1900.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS G. CLARIDGE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Proof -Presses, fully described and represented in the following s peci fication and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates particularly to travcling-cylinder presses, and has for its object to provide simple and automatic means for alternately lifting and depressing the impression and form rollers in such a printing-press. It is particularly useful in proof-presses.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 5. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the parts in a different position.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation, partly in section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view;
and Fig. 6 is an end elevation, partly in section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
A is the frame of the press; B, the bed; C, the form, and D the impression-cylinder.
1 2 are the form-rollers 3, the distributingroller rotated by gear-wheel 4, which engages with one of the fixed racks 5 on the bed of the press as the cylinder and form-rollers and connected parts reciprocate, as will be hereinafter described.
5 is the ductor-roll, 6 the fountain, and '7 the fountain-roll.
The journal-bearings of the impression-cylinder are mounted in vertical frames 8, one on each side of the press, attached to a horizontal reciprocating carriage 9. The inkfountain and ductor-roller and distributing- 0 roller are also mounted on this carriage. The
form-roller 1 is mounted upon frames 10, one on each side of the press, pivoted to the carriage. The form-roller 2 is mounted on similar pivoted frames 11. In the frames 8 below the journal-boxes of the impression-cylinder on each side of the press are slides 12, having at the top set-screws 13 and at the bottom guide-rollers 14, projecting inwardly toward the frame of the press. and 11 are similar slides 15, mounted in guidin g-ways 16, attached to the carriage on each one endof the press to the other.
Under the frames 10 18, projecting inwardly toward the frame of the press and reciprocating up and down on the carriage in slides 23.
The carriage 9 is supported by wheels 19 20, riding upon ways formed on the top of the press, and is propelled to and fro on the frame of the press by a gear-wheel 21,journalled upon the shaft of a hand-wheel 22, which gear-wheel 21 meshes with the racks 5. The hand-wheel 22 is rotated and causes the carriage 9 to reciprocate over the bed-plate from As the carriage reciprocates to the right from the position which it occupies in Fig. 1 the guiderollers 14 will meet pivoted inclines 24, projecting from each side of the press, and will be lifted by these inclines until the set-screws 13 strike the journal-boxes of the impressioncylinder and lift the same to a position in which the impression-cylinder will clear the form-plates. The impression-cylinder is held in this position during the greater part of the movement of the carriage toward the right by the engagement of the guide-roller 14 with horizontal flanges 26, projecting from the sides of the frame of the press and onto which the guide-rollers pass from the inclines 24. During this movement of the carriage the form-rollers are in the position shown in Fig. 1-that is, in such position as to come into contact with the form-plates and ink the same. When the carriage arrives near the right-hand end of the press, the rollers 14 strike inclined safety-cams 27 and are thrown down, permitting the impression-cylinder to descend to its lower position. At the same time the rollers 18 pass under a pivoted incline 28, which after the passage of the same again drops to the position shown in Fig. 1. On the return movement of the carriage toward the left the guide-rollers 14 ride under the flange 26, holding the impression-cylinder down against the form in the position shown in Fig. 2, and the guide-roll.- ers 18 are lifted by the pivoted incline28 and ride up onto the horizontal flange 29 and rest the carriage.

Thus on the reciprocation of the carriage toward the right the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 3 and the ink is distributed over the plates, and on the reciprocation toward the left the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 2 and the impression is made upon the paper to be printed.
When the carriage reaches the end of its reciprocation toward the left, the rollers 18 come into contact with safety cam-inclines 30, by which they are forced down to their lower position. These safety cam-inclines 27 and 30 are provided in order to positively cause the descent of the guide- rollers 14 and 18 and to provide against any possible failure of the movement of the same from gravity.
The'ductor-roller 5 is mounted upon a pivoted lever 31, connected by a link 32, which is guided by a pin 32, playing in a slot therein, with a roller 33, which at the end of the righthand stroke rides under a cam-plate 34, cansing the ductor-roller to rock against the fountain-roller 7.
The shaft of the fountain-roller is provided with segmental gearing 35, mounted loosely thereon and provided with a pawl 42, engaging with a ratchet-wheel fixed to the roller. The segment 42 engages with a segmental gearing 36, formed upon a pivoted lever 37, connected by a link 38 to a roller 39, the link 38 being guided in its vertical movement by a pin 40, riding in a slot in the link. The roller 39, near the end of the right-hand stroke, rides up a cam-plate 41, causing the segment 35 to rock, and thereby the pawl 42 to rotate the fountain-roll.
What I claim is- 1. In a printing-press the combination of a stationary bed, a carriage reciprocating to and fro across the bed, an impression-roller on the said carriage, slides in the carriage controlling the position of the impressionroller with reference to the bed, and flanges on the frame of the press controlling the position of the slides whereby during one half of a reciprocation of the carriage the impression-cylinder is held above the bed and during the succeeding half thereof it is held upon the bed, substantially as set forth.
2. In aprinting-press the combination of a stationary bed, a carriage reciprocating to and fro across the bed, an impression-roller on the said carriage, slides in the carriage controlling the position of the impressionroller with reference to the bed, guide-rollers upon the slides, horizontal flanges onthe frame of the press for engaging with the guide-rollers and pivoted inclines for diverting the guide-rollers from a position below to a position above the flanges, substantially as set forth.
3. In a printing-press the combination of a stationary bed, a carriage reciprocating to and fro across the bed, a roller on the said carriage, slides in the carriage controlling the position of the roller with reference to the bed, and flanges on the frame of the press controlling the position of the slides whereby during one half of a reciprocation of the carriage the roller is held above the bed and during the succeeding half thereof it is held upon the bed, substantially as set forth.
4. In a printing-press the combination of a stationary bed, a carriage reciprocating to and fro across the bed, a roller on the said carriage, slides in the carriage controlling the position of the roller with reference to the bed, guide-rollers upon the slides, horizontal flanges on the frame of the press for engaging with the guide-rollers and pivoted inclines for diverting the guide-rollers from a position below to a position above the flanges, substantially as set forth.
. 5. In a printing-press the combination of a stationary bed, a carriage reciprocating to and fro across the bed, a form-roller on the said carriage, slides in the carriage controlling the position of the form-roller with reference to the bed, and flanges on the frame of the press controlling the position of the slides whereby during one half of a reciprocation of the carriage the form-roller is held upon the bed and during the succeeding half thereof it is held above. the bed, substantially as set forth.
6. In a printing-press the combination of-a stationary bed, a' carriage reciprocating to and fro across the bed, a form-roller and an impression-roller mounted upon the carriage, a set of slides for each controlling the positions respectively of the form-roller and impression-roller, and horizontal flanges upon the frame of the press whereby the positions of the. form-roller and impression-roller with reference to the bed are caused to be opposite to each other and to change on each half reciprocation of the bed, substantially as set forth.
7. A printing-press frame provided with a horizontal flange as 26, a pivoted incline as 24, a reciprocating carriage, an impressionroller mounted therein and aguide-roller carried by the carriage and adapted to ride upon the upper side of said flange when the carriage is moved in one direction and upon the lower side thereof when the carriage is moving in the other direction and to automatically shift from one position to the other, sub stantially as set forth.
8. A printing-press. frame provided with a flange as 26, pivoted incline as 24, fixed safetycam-incline as 27, a carriage reciprocating along the frame, and a roller moving in guides in the carriage, the movement of the roller being controlled by the inclines, substantially as set forth.
9 In a printing-press, the combination with a form-bed, of a reciprocating carriage, im*
pression and inking rollers mounted therein, devices for moving the impression-roller out of contact with the form on one stroke of the carriage and permitting it to run in contact with the form on the other stroke, devices for lifting the inking-roller away from the form when the impression-roller is running in contact with it and for permitting it to run in contact with it when the impression-roller is out of contact, and independent means for operating each set of devices, substantially as described.
10. The combination with a bed, of a reciprocating carriage, an impression-roller, bearings for the roller, frames in which the bearings are mounted, vertically-movable slides operating to produce a movement of the roller with relation to the bed, and means stationary with respect to the bed and acting on the slides for operating the slides to produce said movement during alternate strokes of the carriage, substantially as described.
11. In a printing-press, the combination with a stationary bed, of a reciprocating carriage, a pair of form-rollers, pivoted bearings in which the form-rollers are mounted, and
- means including a cam-surface stationary with respect to the bed for turning the bearings on their pivots to lift and hold the formrollers away from the form during alternate strokes of the carriage, substantially as described.
12. In a printing-press, the combination with a stationary bed, of a reciprocating carriage, a roller on said carriage, slides on the Y carriage controlling the position of the roller with reference to the bed, and means includin g a cam-surface stationary with respect to the bed and acting on the slides for operating the slides to hold the roller out of contact with the bed during alternate strokes of the carriage, substantially as described.
13. In a printing-press, the combination with a reciprocating carriage, of a set of formrollers, pivoted bearings in which the formrollers are mounted, a slide for operating against both bearings to turn them on their pivots, and means including a cam-surface stationary with respect to the bed for operating the slide, substantially as described.
14. In a printing-press, the combination with a reciprocating carriage, impression and form rollers mounted therein, slides for producing a movement of the impression and form rollers with relation to the form and for holding either the impression or the form rollers away from the form during each stroke of the carriage, and independent means for alternately operating the slides, substantially as described.
