TYPE PRUTECTDR FOR TYPE WRITING MACHINES.
(Application filed Oct. 27, 1899.) (No Model.)
l-V/TN/SSSES INVENTOR w 3 Attorney dramas hirer MORRIS I IIMSTEAD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TYPE PHOTECTOR FOR TYPE WRlTlhlG MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,508, dated January 2, 1900.
Application filed October 27, 1899. Serial No. 735,005. (No model.)
To (r/ZZ whont it ntrr-y concern:
Be it known that I, MoRRIs F. UnsTEAD, a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Protectors for Type-lVriting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in type-protectors for type-writ-in machines, the object of the invention being to provide a device of the above-mentioned character which can be readily placed in position on the type bars and type-blocks of a type-writing machine and which will efiectually prevent injury to the type when they come in contact with each other or with a type-block.
With this object in view the invention con-' sists in a flexible covering for a portion of the type-block an d type-bar of a type-writing machine.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combina tions and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improvements attached to a type-block and type-bar of a type-writing machine, and Fig. 2 is a view in section through the type-block and type-bar.
A represents a type-bar of a type-writing machine, and B an ordinary type-block secured thereto.
My improved protector 0 comprises a flexihis sleeve 1, adapted to partially encircle the end of the type-bar, and said sleeve is provided with an ear or extension 2, covering the extreme outer under face of the type-bar, and
a T-shaped casing 3, conforming in general contour to the type-bl0ck and fitting snugly thereon. The protector may be made of a single piece of flexible material, if so desired. It will thus be seen that if the operator strikes a key with one finger and prolongs the touch, and then strikes another with another finger, the last one struck will invariably strike the bar or type-block of the first key struck and receive more or less injury to the type, or if two keys are struck with one finger, one fairly and the other partially, the one will follow the other in too-quick succession and strike the bar or the type-block, and thus become flattened or battered. It is to avoid these injuries to the type that my invention is devised.
Various slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
,1. As an article of manufacture, a protector for the type of a type-writing machine, comprising a flexible covering for a portion of said type.
2. As an article of manufacture, a typeprotector for type-writing machines, comprising a flexible casing for the type and flexible sleeve for the outer end of the type-bar.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORRIS F. UMSTEAD.
