To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK MENZER, of Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Vehicles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a vehicle-body of such construction that double and single accessory seats may be located in a back extension of the body and be protected by a boot when not'needed.

Another object of the invention is to construct the boot in sections arranged to lie horizontally, one adjoining the other, or occupy a vertical position and constitute backs for the accessory'seats.

A further object of the invention is to provide drop-doors in the sides of the extension of the vehicle-body, whereby access may be conveniently gained to the extension of the body when the accessory seats are in use.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vehiclebody having the improvements applied,the accessoryseats being in position for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken about centrally through the body when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4, the accessory seats being concealed or covered by the boot. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the vehicle-body, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of a part of the rear portion of the front or fixed seat, illustrating the adaptation to the vehicle of a single adjustable seat and a back for the same.

The body A of the vehicle may be of any desired construction or shape and is provided with a rear extension B. The said body A of the vehicle is further provided with a stationary front seat 0 of any desired character. At each side of the extension B a drop-door 10 is constructed, which doors are adapted to open outward and downward, so that ready The doors 10 are held closed, as illustrated in Fig. 2, by means of hooks 13 or like devices attached to the inner faces of the sides of the extension and arranged to engage with keepers 14, carried by said drop-doors.

At any desired point between the bottom and top of the extension B, between the back portion of said extension and the rear walls of the openings closed by the drop-doors 10, a false bottom 15 is constructed, which extends from side to side of the extension, and this'false bottom is usually provided with an opening 15, as shown in Fig. 2. A seat 16, properly upholstered, is connected by hinges 17 with the said false bottom 15 at its forward longitudinal edge, the hinges being secured to the upper face of the said false bottom and said seat 16, which is accessory to the front seat, when not in use is folded down and at that time extends substantially to the back portion of the support for the front seat 0, as shown in Fig. 8. The accessory seat 16 is usually provided with a knob 18, and when the seat is in position for use-namely, folded over upon the false bottom 15-the knob enters the opening 15 in the said false bottom, as shown in Fig. 2. A loop 16 is also preferably attached to the movable on accessory seat 16, which enables the seat to be readily raised and carried to its closed position in alinement with the false bottom 15. This accessory seat 16 when not in use is protected by a boot D. This boot is made in two

19 and 20, the section 20 being larger than the section 19, and the two sections are adapted to normally fold down upon the upper edge of the extension and to overlap one another, if desired. 7

19 and 20 is provided with upholstery 21 upon its under or inner face, and the larger section 20 is connected by hinges 22 with the upper rear portion of the extension B, while the smaller and for- ICO ward section 19 of the body is connected by hinges 23 with the upper rear portion of the body of the vehicle at the rear of the stationary seat 0, as shown in Fig. 3, and the larger in Fig. 5.

section 20 of the boot is also preferably provided with a handle 24, whereby the said section may be readily raised. The section 20 when carried to a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 2, formsa back for the accessory seat 16 when said seat is carried over the false bottom 15 and is in position for use, as shown in Fig. 2. When the section 20 of the boot is in its vertical position, it is prevented from moving too far rearward by engagement with shoulders 25, formed upon the inner faces of rails 26, erected at the rear side portions of the extension B, as shown in Fig. 3.

A dovetail slide 27 is mounted in suitable ways 28, formed upon the under surface of the support for the body-seat O, as shown in Fig. 2,and the said slide when drawn out is adapted to extend into the extension 13, as is also shown in Fig. 2, and support a single seat 29, having a dovetail recess 30 in its bottom adapted to receive the slide 27, as illustrated When the single accessory seat 29 is in position on the slide 27, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the smaller section 19 of the boot is carried upward to a substantially vertical position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, constituting a back for the single seat. When the single seat is not required,the slide 27 may be pushed forward, so as to be entirely concealed beneath the stationary seat (1, and the single seat 29 may then be made to rest upon the bottom of the extension of the vehicle, as shown in Fig. 3.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a vehicle, a body formed with an extension, a false bottom in said extension, an accessory seat hinged at one edge to said false bottom whereby it may be reversed, and a boot pivoted in said extension and adapted to form a back for said seat, as set forth.

2. In a vehicle-body, a rear extension provided with a false bottom, a seat hinged to the said false bottom and adapted to lie in the same plane with the said false bottom or oocupy a position above said bottom, and a sectional boot hinged at opposite edges to the said extension, the sections of the said boot being adapted to lie either in the same plane or to occupy a vertical position, one facing forward and the other rearward, as described.

3. In a vehicle-body, a slide, a removable seat supported by the said slide, and a boot for the said seat, said boot having a hinged connection with the body and in one position constituting a back for the said seat, as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination, with a vehicle-body, a rear extension for the said body, and hinged drop-doors forming a portion of the sides of the extension, of a false bottom for the said extension, a seat hinged to the false bottom, being capable of occupying a position in the same horizontal plane with the said false bottom or a position above the false bottom, a slide carried by the body and adapted to ex tend within said extension of the-body, said slide being dovetail in cross-section, a seat having a dovetail recess adapted to receive the said slide, and a boot constructedin sections, which sections are arranged to occupy a horizontal or a vertical position, the sections of the boot when in a vertical position con stitutin g backs for the seats in the extension, and when in a horizontal position protecting said seats, as described.

5. In avehicle, a body provided with a rear extension, accessory seats in said extension,

and a boot formed in independent sections pivoted in said extension and each of which sections is arranged to form a back for one of said accessory seats, as set forth.
