EDIVIN G. NIOEVVANER, OF JOI-INSTOIVN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE LORAIN STEEL COMPANY, OF PENNSYLVANIA.
CA R -T R U C K SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,274, dated December 19, 1899. Application filed June 19,1899- Serial No. 721,162. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. NICEWANER, of Johnstown, in the county of Oambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oar-Trucks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates generally to eartrucks, and more particularly to that class of trucks which employ an independentframe spring-supported from and below the axle or journal boxes. In this class of trucks as heretofore constructed it has been a matter of more or less difficulty to remove the axleboxes, wheels, and axles from the truck, owing to the manner in which the axle-boxes have been mounted; and the object of the present invention is mainly to provide simple means whereby this difficulty is overcome and the boxes, axles, and wheels maybe readily and easily removed. I attain these objects by the means which I will now proceed to describe,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing one of the boxes mounted in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an end View of one of the yokes or stirrups detached, and Fig. 3 a side View of a truck in which the invention is embodied.
' In the drawings, the letterA designates one of the side bars of a truck of the class above indicated and which is provided with opentop guides or pedestals A rising therefrom for the axle-boxes B.
D D designate rigid yokes or stirrupswhose side arms loosely straddle or embrace the re- 40 speetive pedestals or guides and are pivotally secured to the lower end portions in seats E,
formed between the pedestals or guides and hinge butts orlugs E, said end portions, the
pedestals or guides, and the stirrup-arms being provided with registering perforations d d for the pins or pivots 61 The latter may have inner headed ends countersunk in the pedestals or guides, as indicated at d in Fig.
4, and their outer ends may be secured by G G designate the axle-box springs, which are seated at their lower end portions llllIJOOkets on the axle-boxes and at their upper ends in inverted pockets G, formed in the transverse or connecting portions of the yokes or stirrups.
H designates the bolster, and I the vehicle bod y-supporting springs. These, however, form no part of the invention.
In order in the constructions above described to remove the axles, wheels, and boxes from the frame A, it is necessary only to jack up the said frame sufficiently to take the com pression off the springs G. The yokes or stirrups D can then be swung laterally and out-' wardly, leaving the top of the pedestals unobstructed. The axles can then be lifted out and removed.
I do not wish to limit myself to the details of construction which I have hereinshown and described, as these may obviously be varied in many respects without affecting the character and scope of my invention. Nor do I limit myself to the use of the invention upon the particular style of truck which is illustrated.
Having thus described my invention, what .I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
' 1. In a car-truck, the combination with a frame having open-top pedestals for the axleboxes, and laterally-open seats at the bases of said pedestals; of spring caps or pockets and yokes or stirrups supporting the said caps or pockets and pivotally see u red at their lower ends in said open seats.
2. In a car-truck, the combination with an open-top pedestal and an axle-box seated therein of a yoke or stirrup embracing the said pedestal and pivoted to move laterally thereof.
3. In a car-truck, the combination with the spring-supported side bar having open-top guides or pedestals, of the yokes or stirrups embracing said guides or pedestals, and having spring-pockets normally above the same, and pivotal connections between said guides or stirrups and the side bar.
4. In a car-truck, the combination with a side bar spring-supported below the axleboxes and supporting the vehicle-body, said bars having open-top pedestals or guides for the axle-boxes, and adjacent thereto hinge butts or lugs, of yokes or stirrups straddling or embracing the said pedestals or guides and provided with spring-pockets normally over the axle-boxes, and hinge or pivot pins seated in the said pedestals and hinge-butts, and
