Description

rare-s PATENT tries.
JOHN H. GOES, OF WVOROESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE GOES TVRENOI-I COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,958, dated December 12, 1899.
Application filed October 9, 1899.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. OOEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in renches, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of that class of wrench in which one jaw slides on the shank of the other jaw, my improvements being directed more particularly to the means of keeping in registered position with relation to the main jaw the screw-sustaining collar, the latter being held in place through the application of the handpiece to the shank of the wrench.
My invention comprehends a wrench pro vided in its shank with a collar-positioning shoulder and at one edge with a partial screwthread, a collar, and a handpiece provided with a partial screw-thread to cooperate with the partial screw-thread of the shank, where'- by by turning the handpiece on the shank to engage the respective partial screw-threads the handpiece may be moved longitudinally on the shank to force the collar firmly against said shoulder and lock it in working position.
Figure 1 in side elevation represents a wrench embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a section in the line a Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail showing the lower end of the shank with the parts applied to it in section. Fig. 4 shows the handpiece and collar applied to the shank, the partial thread of the shank and handpiece being disengaged; and Fig. 5 shows part of the handpiece and its attached partial thread and stop.
The-main jaw A, its shank A, provided with a collar-positioning shoulder a, the movable jaw B, fitted to slide on the shank A, the col-. lar O, surrounding the shank and forming a seat for the end of the screw D, employed to actuate the movable jaw, are and may be as usual in this class of wrench. The successful operation of a wrench of this class depends on the exact position of the collar and the fact that it be maintained in this position. To force this collar closely against the shoulder and keep it in its registered position, I
Serial No. '73 2,989. (No model.)
have provided one edge of the shank with a partial screw-thread a, represented as an in clined notch, and I have provided one arm e of the handpiece E with a partial screwthread e, represented as an inclined projection adapted to enter the notch, the notch being so located in the shank with relation to the shoulder a that a partial rotation of the handpiece, the projection entering a notch, will cause the upper end of the handpiece, in contact with the lower end of the collar, to force the upper end of the collar firmly against the shoulder a. To prevent the possible rotation of the handpiece further than necessary, I provide the projection c with a stop 6 to contact with the arm 6. The stop also acts to aline the arms a in proper relation with the shank to enable the handle-scales f to be applied, the usual screw f and nut f being inserted, through the scales and the hole f in the shank. The nut h, applied to the end of the shank, is of usual construction.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 7 5 Patent, is
1. The shank provided with a collar-positioning shoulder, and a partial screw-thread and a collar applied to said shank; combined with a handpiece having a partial screwthread to engage the partial screw-thread of the shank, partial rotation of said handpiece causing the collar to be forced against and held firmly in contact with the shoulder of the shank, substantially as described.
2. The shank provided with a collar-positioning shoulder and a partial screw-thread;
andacollar applied loosely to said shank; combined with a handpiece having a partial screwthread, and a stop, the partial screw-thread of the handpiece engaging the partial screwthread of the shank and acting to'move the handpiece longitudinally on the shank to lock the collar in its operative position against the shoulder of the shank, said stop alining the arms of the hand piece and the shank for the reception of the handle-scales, substantially as described.
3. The shank provided with a collar-positioning shoulder and a partial screw-thread; and a collar applied loosely to said shank, combined with a handpiece having a partial screw-thread, and a stop, the partial screwthread of the handpiece engaging the partial screw-thread of the shank and acting to move the handpieee longitudinally on the shank to lock the collar in its operative position against the shoulder of the shank, said stop alining the arms of the handpiece and the shank for the reception of the handle-scales, handleseales applied to the shank and handpieee,
and means to confine them in place, substan- IO tially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN H. GOES.
