To all whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. NEWBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Straw- Stackers, of which the following is a specification.
In that class of machines (generally known as pneumatic stackers by which the straw,
&c., is taken from threshing-machines and driven by a blast of air through a trunk or chute to the stack the result as such trunks or chutes are ordinarily constructed is that the straw is thrown onto the stack with the entire force of the blast of air. This in many instances gives the stack a greater solidity and flatter shape than are desired; and the principal object of my invention is to provide a means whereby a'considerable portion of the air-blast may escape before reaching the extreme end of such trunk or chute, so that the straw will be driven out with less force.
A further object is to render this air-escape adjustable, so that the exact force desired can be secured.
Said invention mainly consists in providing in the trunk or chute a reticulated or perforated portion, preferably located on the upper side and extending for a considerable distance back of the extreme delivering end or hood, as shown, although the size, location, and arrangement can obviously be varied.
It further consists in providing the same with an adjustable imperforate cover, whereby the effective perforated portion may be increased or diminished and the force of the air-blast regulated accordingly.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a top or plan view of the upper end of the trunk or chute of a pneumatic straw-stacker constructed in accordance with my present invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view thereof.
I have not illustrated in the drawings the threshing-machine, the blast-fan, or the lower portion of the trunk or chute of the strawstacker, as these various devices may be of any usual or desired construction, and each and all are well known in some of their numerous forms to those skilled in the art. Such machines are well illustrated in the Buchanan patent, No. 467,476, in the Nethery patent, No. 493,734, in the Landis patent, No. 512,556, in the Kirshman patent, No. 540,102, in the Seburn patent, No. 596,914, and in many others.
As shown in the drawings, the upper portion of the trunk or chuteA has aperforated or reticulated portion a, preferably upon its upper side and near its outer end, through which a portion of the air may escape, as hereinbeforeindicated. Mounted uponthistrunk or chute A and adapted to cover saidl perforated or reticulated portion a is a cover B. This is preferably mounted in slides or ways I), so that it may be moved longitudinally of the trunk or chute, and thus adapted to cover more or less of said perforated or reticulated portion, as may be desired. The trunk or chute is also preferably provided with the usual sectional andadjustable hood,composed of two or more sections, two sections 0 and 0 being shown. One or all of these sections may also be composed of perforated or reticulated material, if desired. I have shown the section 0 as composed of such material, so that a portion of the air may escape therethrough in a different direction from that in which the straw is delivered.
By the use of my invention I am enabled to employ any force of air-blast to throw the straw out of the machine and propel it to near the stack and at the same time to insure that it shall not be thrown onto the stack with any greater force than is desired to secure the required density.
Having thus fully described my said inven tion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A trunk or chute for pneumatic stackers formed with a perforated or reticulated portion on its back side behind the hood, and provided with an adjustable imperforate cover therefor, substantially as set forth.
