To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIS GARDNER, of Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Speed and Pressure Governor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact In an apparatus of this class the receiver is usually provided with a plurality of outlets,
from which the compressed fluid is Withdrawn at irregular intervals, so that the pressure within the receiver tends to vary greatly from time to time. It is desirable that a substantially uniform pressure Within the receiver be maintained, and for this purpose a pressure-governor is provided which is controlled by pressure within the receiver and which when the pressure thereinl-exceeds a predetermined limit acts upon the'throttle-valve ot' the speed-governor to reduce the speed, of
the engine and thereby reduces the supply of.
fluid which is pumped into the receiver.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafterset fortli,and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

usual governor-controlled throttle-valve and which is connected with the steam-chest of the engine in the usual manner. B designates a frame supported on said valve-chamber and projecting upwardly therefrom. O designates a speed-governorof ordinary construction sustained upon said frame. Said governor consists of a governor-spindle O', which has bearing in a tubular rotative shaft O2, which latter is contained within a vertical bearing-sleeve B', supported by the frame B. Said tubular shaft is rotated through the medium of a bevel-gear C3, attached to the lower end thereof, which is driven by a second bevel-gear D, attached to a horizontal shaft D', mounted in a suitable bearing D2 `on said frame B and adapted to he driven from a rotary part of the engine through a driving-pulley D3.

the upper end of which is connected a link or cup C8, and with which link or cup the governor-spindle O is connected by means which permit vertical movement between the same, as shown in Fig. la. As shown in said ligure, said link orcup'is provided at its upper end with a tubular extension O9, into which the lowerend of the governor-spindle loosely fits, but which is unconnected therewith. Said governor-spindle normally rests in contact with the lower end of said tubular extension.
I have herein shown two forms of pressuregovernor, one lin which a cylinder and piston of ordinary form are employed to transmit the pressure from the receiver to the speedgovernor to actuate the same and the other in which an inclosure containing a diaphragm is substituted for the piston and cylinder.
Referring now to the parts constituting the form of pressure-governor shown in Figs. l to 5, both inclusive, said parts are made as follows: E designates a cylinder which, as herein shown, is sustain ed from the valve-casing A through the medium of a shelf or support A. To the lower end of said cylinder is connected a pipe E, which leads from the re- ICO ceiverinto which thepump discharges. Within said cylinder is contained a piston F, which is adapted to be-moved therein under the influence of the pressure transmitted thereto through said pipe E. Said piston is provided with a stem F', which projects upwardly through an opening in the upper wall of the cylinder. G designates a lever which is pivoted between its ends to the frame B upon a pivot pin or stud g. Said lever engages at one end the cup or link C2, the lever being shown as provided with a circular end which fits within said cup or link. Said lever extends at its other end in normal engagement with the piston-stem F and is adapted to be oscillated thereby when the latter is moved upwardly by the pressure within said cylinder. Said lever when the parts of the speedgovernor are in their normal positions occupies a substantiallyT horizontal position and is in contact at its outer end with'the upper end ofthe piston-stem F. As shown in Fig. l, the speed-governor is in action and the outer end of the lever is moved away from the said piston-stem. With this construction when said piston and its stem are caused to rise under the influence of pressure from the receiver the outer end of the lever G is moved upwardly and the inner end thereof, which is connected with the link or cup C8 and throttlevalve spindle, is moved downwardly,whereby said throttle-valve spindle is depressed and the throttle-valve actuated to cut off steam from the steam-chest. The depression of said link will not move the governor-spindle downwardly, because of the detached connection of said spindle with the cup or link, so that the action of the pressure-govern or is entirely independent of the speed-governor. The governor-spindle rests in contact with the bottom of said tubular extension C2, so that the outward movement of the weights C4 act directly and promptly to depress the throttlevalve spindle. In order to raise the throttlevalve spindle when the Weights move downwardly or when the pressure-governor is out of action, a spring is applied thereto, which, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, acts directly on the lever G. In order that said pressure-governor may not be operated under the in fluence of ordinary pressure within the receiver, a weighted lever H is provided, which in this instance is pivoted at its inner end to the stud g on the frame B and is supported between its ends upon the upper end of the piston-stem F'. Said lever is provided outside of its point of support upon the piston-stem with a weight H', which is adapted to be moved longitudinally of the lever, and thereby vary the force required to raise the piston and throw the pressure-governor into action. As herein shown, the inner or pivotal end of the said lever H is bifurcated, and the arms h thereof are pivoted to the stud g ,outside of the lever G. The arms h of said lever H extend outwardly beyond the plane of the piston-stem F, so as to afford space for the lever G to have contact with said stem between said arms. This construction affords a convenient means of pivoting both of said levers upon one pivot and greatly simplifies the construction. The upper end of the piston-stem F is made of a sufficient width to extend between the arms h of the lever H and is provided with a knifeedge which engages said lever and the lever G, so as to minimize the friction between said parts. As before stated, it will be understood that under normal conditions the lever G will be substantially horizontal and in contact at its outer end with the upper end of the spindle-stem, so that the motion of said stem under the influence of pressure from the receiver, however slight, is communicated to the throttle-valve spindle. The stem F is shown as pivoted to the piston F, and the opening in the upper wall of the cylinder is made larger than the diameter of said stem to provide for slight oscillation of the latter in the upward movement of the same.
Referring now to the means for restoring the throttle-valve to its open position when the centrifugal and pressure governors are out of action, these parts are made as follows: I designates a pin which engages the upper edge of the lever G on the side of its pivot opposite its connection with the governorspindle. Said pin is mounted within a bearing B2 on the frame B and is surrounded by a spring'l, which is interposed between a shoulder 1l on said pin and the inner end of a nut B3, which latter has screw-threaded engagement with the upper end of the bearing and is provided with an axial opening into which the upper end of the pin projects. Said nut B2 is adapted, by reason of its screwthreaded connection with the bearing B2, to be moved into and out of said bearing and vary the tension of said sprin g I', and thereby vary the force required to depress said throttlevalve spindle and the valve attached thereto. As a further and separate improvement I have provided means for limiting the operation of the pressure-governor just before the engine is brought to a stop, so that said engine may during the period of abnormal pressure within the receiver be permitted to run slowly until such pressure is relieved. The means herein shown for effecting such limitation of the operation of the pressure-governor are made as follows: E2 designates a tubular nut which surrounds the piston-stem F and has screw-threaded engagement with the upper wall of the cylinder E and which is made of sufficient lengthto project some distance within said cylinder. F2 designates a stoppin which passes through the piston-stem F and projects beyond the same, on either side thereof. Said pin constitutes a shoulder on the stem, which is adapted for contact with the lower end of said tubular nut E2 when the stem is raised, and such shoulder may be made of other form. With this construction the movement of said pressure-governor may be IZO limited at any desired time in the gperation' thereof by moving said nut E2 into or out of the cylinder, as required. Said nut E2 is locked in its adjusted position by means of a j am-nut E3, which has screw-threaded engagement therewith and engages the outer face of the end wall of the cylinder.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a modified form of pressure-governor adapted for use with the form of speed-governor shown in the above-described figures, the parts of the speedgovernor shown in said Figs. 6 and 7 being lettered to correspond with similar parts shown in Fig. 1. Instead of employing a piston and cylinder, as shown in the said abovedescribed figures, with which to transmit the pressure from the receiver to the throttlevalve of the speed-governor, I have shown a device consisting of a suitable inclosure which is in communication with the said receiver and provided with a flexible diaphragm which is connected with and adapted to actuate the lever which connects the pressure-governor with the throttle-valve spindle. As shown in said gures, J J designate upper and lower walls which form an air-inclosure which is connected with the receiver through the medium of an opening j'.
Said walls of the inclosure are secured together by screw-bolts j?, and the inclosure as a whole is shown as connected with the valve-casing A by means of a set-screw J2. Within said inclosure is contained a iieXible diaphragm K, which is secured in place by having the outer margins thereof confined between the walls J J of the inclosure. L designates a shoe located in the upper part of the inclosure and in contact with the upper surface of said diaphragm,and L a stem which is connected with said shoe and which projects through an opening in the wall J of said inclosure. To the upper end of said stem L is attached a cross-arm M, which is provided with a slot m, adapted to receive the outer end of a lever II, which corresponds with the lever G of the prior construction and which is pivoted between its ends upon a pin g in the frame B and connected at its other end with the governorspindle C in the same manner asin the prior construction. The frame B, as in the prior construction, is provided with a springpressed pin I, which engages the upper side of the lever N between its point of pivot and the stem L. Said outer end of the lever N rests loosely in the notch fm of the cross-arm M, which notch is open at its upper end, so
l that said lever may rise in said notch when lower ends to the opposite ends of a second cross-arm M', which is located below the inclosure formed by the walls J J Said crossarm Ml is supported centrally thereof from the low'er wall J of the inclosure through the medium of a set-screw Mwhioh passes therethrough and has bearing upon the lower side of a lug or projection m of said lower wall J With this construction the tension of said springs may be varied by moving said lower cross-arm M away from and toward the wall J' of the inclosure through the medium of the set-screw M2 and the force required to actuate the lever N through the medium of the pressure-governor varied. P designates a screw threaded tubular nut which has screw-threaded engagement with the upper wall J of the diaphragm of the inclosure and through which the stem L passes. Said nut is adapted to be moved inwardly and outwardly by its screw-threaded connecton with the wall J and to engage the upper side of the shoe L when the stem is raised and thereby limit the movement of the same for the purpose of limiting the action of the pressure-governor before the same brings the engine to a stop.
The form of stop for limiting the action of the pressure-governor before the engine is brought to a stop may be varied, and I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction herein shown.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with an endwise-mov able spindle of a speed-governor and a valvespindle which is connected therewith by means permitting longitudinal movement of the spindles, of a pressure-governor, connections between said pressure-governor and the valve-spindle, and a spring applied. to said connections which acts in opposition'to that action of the pressure-governor which tends to depress the said valve-spindle.
2. The combination with aspeed-governor provided with an endwise-movable governorspindle, a valve-spindle, and means connecting said spindles which permit relative endwise movement of the same, of a pressuregovernor provided with an inlet-opening, and connections between said pressure-governor and said valve-spindle embracing a lever pivoted between its ends and connected at one end with the valve-spindle and .adapted to be oscillated by a movable part of the pressure-governor, and yielding connections between said lever and a stationary part of the engine-frame, which acts in opposition to the movement of said lever when the valvespindle is depressed.
3. The combination with an endwise-movable spindle, of a speed-governor and a valvespindle which is connected therewith by means permitting relative longitudinal movement of the spindles, of a pressure-governor and connections between said pressure-governor and valve-spindle embracing a lever pivoted between its ends and connected at IOO IIO

4. The combination with the movable spindle of a speed-governor and a valve-spindle which is connected therewith by means permitting relative longitudinal movement of said spindles, of a pressure-governor and connections between said pressure-governor and said valve-spindle embracing a lever pivoted between its ends, said lever being connected at one end with the valve-spindle and being adapted for actuation at its other end by a movable part of the pressure-governor, and an adjustable spring-pressed pin engaging said lever and acting in opposition to that movement of the lever which tends to depress the valve-spindle.

The combination with a speed-governor and its valve-spindle, of a pressure-governor comprising an inclosure or cylinder, a prime mover therein, a stem connected with said prime mover and projecting from said inclosure, alever pivoted between its en ds and connected at one end with said valve-spindle and adapted for actuation at its other end by said stem, a Weight or its equivalent applied to said stem which acts in opposition to said pressure-governor, and a spring applied to said lever which acts to restore the valve controlled by the governor to its normal position, said lever being disconnected from said stem.
6. The combination with the spindle of a speed-governor and a valve-spindle which is connected with the governor-spindle by means permitting relative longitudinal movement, of a pressure-governor comprising an inclosure or cylinder, a prime mover therein, a stem connected with said prime mover and projecting from said inclosure, alever pivoted between its ends and connected at one end with the valve-spindle and adapted for actuation at its other end by said stem but detached from the stem, a weight applied to said stem which acts in opposition to said pressuregovernor, and a spring applied to the lever which acts to restore the valve controlled by said governor to its normal position.
7 The combination with a speed-governor and its valve-spindle, of a pressure-governor comprising an inclosure or cylinder, a prime mover therein, a stem connected with said prime mover and projecting from said inclosure, a lever pivoted between its ends and connected at one end with said valve-spindle and adapted for engagement at its other end with said stem, a second lever pivoted at one end to the governor-frame, said second lever engaging said stem between its ends and being provided outside of the stem with a weight, and said rst-mentioned lever being disconnected from the stem.
8. The combination with a speed-governor and its valve-spindle of a pressure-governor comprising an inclosure or cylinder, a prime mover therein, a stem connected with said prime mover and projecting from said inclosure, a lever pivoted between its ends upon.
a bearing mounted on the governor-frame and connected at one end with said valve-spindle and adapted for engagement at its other` end with said stem of the prime mover, said lever being disconnected from the said stem, and a second lever pivoted also to said bearing-stud, said lever engaging between its ends said prim e-moverstem and beingprovided outside of said stem with a weight.

The combination with a speed-governor provided with a spindle, a throttle-valve spindle, and a cup or link inserted between said governor and valve spindles, said cup being attached to said valvespindle and loosely connected with the governor spindle, of a pressure-governor embracing a pivoted lever which engages at one end said cup or link yand is adapted for actuation by a movable part of the pressure-governor, said lever being unattached to said movable part of the pressure-governor.

The combination with a speed-governor provided with a spindle, a throttle-valve spindle, and a cup or link inserted between said governor and valve spindles, said cup being attached to said valve-spindle and loosely connected with the governor-spindle, of a pressure-governor embracing a pivoted lever which engages at one end said cup or link and is adapted for actuation by a movable part of the pressure-governor, said lever being unattached to said-movable part of the pressure-governor, and a spring applied to said lever and acting in opposition to said movable part of the pressure-governor.
