CLOTHES- -POUNDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,214, dated December 5, 1899.
Application filed May 23, 1899. Serial No. 717,916. (No model.) C
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHESTER OoLLINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winfield, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and use ful Improvement in that Class of Washing- Machines Commonly Known as Clothes- Pounders, of which the following is a specification.
It has for its object toimprove and simplify the construction of this class of washing-machines and reduce to a minimum the cost of said construction and the amount of labor required in its operation.
With these ends in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter more in detail described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, to which reference is had, the figure illustrates a front elevation of the invention, in whicha designates an outer shell representing the frustum of a cone provided with an upper closed portion or annular flange a, and b designates a smaller shell or inner casing similar to that of a and provided with openings 0, arranged circumferentially around the shell and in alinement with each other near an upper or closed portion thereof and which communicates with the interior of the shell a. This smaller shell is located centrally within the shell a and is also provided with an annular flange (1, these flanges when the shells are assembled providing a closed upper portion to each of the shells at and b, the latter being secured to the lower part of a central tube at, which communicates with the smaller shell I; and which will be hereinafter referred to.
e designates a small tubular air-chamber secured to and near the upper end of the tube at, having a passage e communicating with the tube d. The bottom of this tubular chamber is provided with an opening f, in which is seated a ball-valve g, by which the opening is opened or closed.
7a 7a designate abrace which serves the purpose of bracing and holding firmly together the shells a and tube d, the tube being provided with the usual handle for operating the device.
The operation of the device will be obvious when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and description thereof; but it may be briefly rehearsed, as follows: When the device is pressed downwardly by the operator into the water, the pressure of the air upwardly through the tube and into the small tubular air-chamber closes the opening in the bottom of the small tubular airchamber through the medium of the valve. Upon the operator raising the device in the water-receptacle the air raises the valve and is admitted through the opening f into the valvechamber 6 and through the opening c to the tube and, finally, into the body of the pounder, thus avoiding a vacuum in the lower chambers and permitting the pounder to be easily raised.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a clothes-pounder, the combination with the body, comprising the inner and outer chambers and central tube, of the ofisetvalve chamber closed at the top and open at the bottom, providing a seat f for the ballvalve and communicating with the tube through the medium of the opening 6, and a ball-valve, all as herein shown and for the purpose described.
CHESTER COLLINS.
