APPARATUS FOR MEASURING LIQUIDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,209, dated. December 5, 1899.
Application filed January '7, 1899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS BERGER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Berlin, Empire of Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Apparatus for Drawing Off Certain Predetermined Quantities of Liquids, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to apparatus for drawing ofi certain predetermined quantities of liquids; and it consists of the details of construction hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In order to render the present specification more easily intelligible reference ishad to the accompanying drawing, which shows the apparatus in vertical section, the illustration being of a diagrammatical nature.
Beneath the main reservoir A is provided the measuring-chamber B, which is dimensioned to contain exactly the quantity of liq uid to be drawn off at each operation of the valves, as hereinafter described.
The main reservoir A is provided with a valve G, having upwardly-extending rod D and a frame or bow N to limit the stroke of the said valve. The reservoir A is further provided with a tube E, open at both ends and extending through the same into the chamber B. At the bottom of the chamber B is provided the outlet-pipe J, which is closed by a valve H of any suitable construction, said valve being provided with a suitablyguided rod F, which extends through the pipe E to the upper part of the main reservoir A. A lever O is pivotally connected, advantageously by a pin-and-slot connection, at M to the upper end of the valve-rod F, and at Lto the upper end of the valve-rod D of valve G, one end of the said lever being provided with a weight K, sufficient normally to keep the valve H closed down on its seat, the other end of the said lever being provided with a cord adapted to be operated by hand and designated by O. The valve H is suitably guided at H and its stroke limited. The tube E serves as an air inlet or vent for the reservoir or chamber B.
The device operates in the following manner: When it is required to draw off the contents of the chamber B, the cord 0 is pulled and the lever C will first operate to close the Serial No. 701,473. (No model.)
valve G by turning on its pivot M. Then on continuing topull the cord 0 the lever C will commence to turn on the pivot L as soon as the rod of valve G forms a fulcrum by closing onto its seat, and thus the valve H will be raised and the contents of the measuringchamber will be allowed to flow out at J, the air entering through the vent-pipe E. On releasing the cord 0 the weighted lever C will first operate to close the valve H, turning on the pivot L, and then will open the valve G by the action of the weight K, thus returning the parts to their normal positions and allowing the measuring-chamber to be again filled.
I wish it to be clearly understood that any suitable class of valves may be employed, as also that the lever C may be suitably guided, if this should be necessary.
In order to determine exactly the contents of the measuring-chamber, the pipe J may be screwed into the bottom of the same, and the quantity of liquid allowed to pass out of the said chamber may be accurately determined or adjusted by screwing the pipe J farther into or out of the bottom of the chamber B.
I claim as my invention- The combination of a chamber 13 having a certain capacity and a superposed reservoir A, a valve G in the bottom of the reservoir, leading to the chamber B and having upwardly-extending stem and a valve H in the bottom of the chamber B having also upwardly-extending stem, a lever G pivotally connected to both valve-stems and having a counterpoise K at one end and'on the other a chain or cord 0 for operating the lever O, which by pull on the chain 0 turns round the pivot M and closes the valve G, by further pull on the chain 0 in the same direction turns round the pivot L and opens the valve H, by releasing the chain 0 the valve H will be closed and the valve G opened by the counterpoise K, all in the described manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
