W/TNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARCHIA L. ROSS, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
TROUSERS SUPPORT OR STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,068, dated November 28, 1899.
Application iiled August 23,1899.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ARCHIA L. Ross, of Port Chester, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Trousers Support or Stretcher, of which the following'is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved trousers-support designed for use in wardrobes, cabinets, closets, and like structures, and arranged to permit of properly supporting and stretching trousers and to contain a large number thereof in a comparatively small space, with convenient access to allow of removing any desired pair of trousers whenever desired.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure lis a plan view of the improvement as applied to a suitable cabinet, the cover thereof being in an open position. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. l and with the cover closed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged face view of one of the supporting-bars. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 4 4 in Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same on the line 5 5 in Fig. 3.
The improved trousers-support illustrated in the drawings is carried by two transverse parallel supports A A', forming part of a supporting structure B in the form of a cabinet or the like, the cabinet having a hinged cover C and open sides normally closed by curtains D, as indicated. 'On the supports A A and at their opposite faces are secured parallel stretching-bars E, each formed of a single piece of wire bent to produce pairs of loops E for receiving a pair of buttons on the trousers, each bar E also having a downwardly-extending loop E2, fastened by a staple E3 or other Serial No. 728,190. (No modell) means to the inner face of the corresponding support A or A. The ends of the bars are preferably driven into the supports A and A', as indicated in Fig. 4.
Eachof the supportsAA is preferably made L-shaped in cross-section between the endsthat is, that portion behind the pairs of loops E is cut out to readily admit the buttons of the trousers, as is plainly indicated in Fig. l. As shown in Fig. 2, the supports A A',- with their bars, are arranged at different levels, so as to give the desired hang to the trousers, as will be readily understood by reference to said ligure. If desired, one of the supports, as shown the support A', is provided with hooks F for supporting other articles.
In using the device a pair of trousers is folded, as shown in Fig. l, and a pair of buttons on one side are hung into the corresponding pair of loops E' on oneof the bars, and a pair of buttons on the other side of the trousers at the waistband are hung in the corresponding opposite set of loops on the bar E of the other support, so that the trousers are stretched throughout their width and freely hang down in the cabinet, thereby retaining their shape to the fullest extent.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described trousers support or stretcher, comprising a supporting structure and spaced parallel stretching-bars therein, the bars being each formed of a single piece of wire having upwardly-extending loops, the said loops of the respective bars being ar ranged in pairs for receiving a pair of the buttons of the trousers, the bars further having downwardly-extending loops alternating with the upwardly-extending loops and projecting below the said upwardly-extending loops, the lower ends or bends of the downwardly-projecting loops being secured to the supporting structure.
