UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY P. LIPINSKI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DEVICE FOR OPENING OR CLOSING DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,820, dated November 14, 1899.
Application filed March 17, 1899- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY P. LIPINSKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening or Olosin g the Doors of Cabinets, Oupboards,&c., of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cabinets, cupboards, wardrobes, and similar devices having hinged doors; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class with improved means for opening and closing the doors; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is an isometric view of an ordinary cupboard or cabinet provided with my improvement and showing the doors open; Fig. 2, a plan View thereof with the top removed and showing the doors closed; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, showing parts of the top in position and showing a modified form of construction; and Fig. 4, a view similarto Fig. 2, showing another modification.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 an ordinary cupboard provided with hinged doors 6, and in the practice 0f my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I pivotally connect with the bottom of each of the doors and adjacent to the hinged sides thereof rods 7. The rods 7 are of equal length, and said rods are each pivoted in a cavity or recess 8, formed in the doors 6. The rods 7 are pivotally connected at their inner ends, as shown at 9, and pivotally connected therewith by means of the same pivotpin is a lever 10, which is pivoted to the bottom of the cupboard at 11. A link 12 is pivotally connected with the other end of the lever 10 and also with an arm 13, secured to Serial No. 709,391. (No model.)
one end of a vertically-arranged shaft 14, which is mounted in keepers 15, secured to the inner side of one side of the cupboard, and the shaft 14 is provided at its upper end with another arm 16, which passes out through a slot or opening 17 in the top of said side of the cupboard and which is provided at its outer end with a handle 18. I also preferably secure in the bottom of the cupboard and in transverse line with the pivotal connection 9 of the rods 7 a pin or stop 19, which limits the outward movement of said rods in the operation of the apparatus, as hereinafter described.
All that is necessary to open the doors of the cupboard or to close the same is to move the outer end of the arm 16 forward and backward. The forward movement of this arm opens the doors and the backward movement thereof closes the same. In the forward movement of this arm the rods 7 are forced forwardly into the position shown in Fig. 1 and the doors of the cupboard are opened, and in the backward movement of said arms the said rods are moved backwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2 and said doors are closed.
By reason of the fact that the rods 7 are of the same length and pivotally connected at their inner ends the forward movement there- .of into the position shown in Fig. 1, where said forward movement is stopped by the pin 9, forces the doors 6 fully open or into a posi= tion parallel with the sides of the cupboard, and the inner movement of said rods into the position shown in Fig. 2 exactly closes the doors.
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 1 the rods 7 rest upon the bottom of the cupboard and move thereon, and the lever 10 is pivotally connected with said bottom of the cupboard, and the arm 13 is at the lower end of the shaft 14; but in Fig. 3 I have shown a modification in which the lever 10 is at the top of the cupboard and pivotally suspended beneath the same, portions of said top being shown in position to illustrate this construction. In this form of construction the link 12 is connected with an arm 21, secured to the top of the shaft 14, and which takes the place of both of the arms 13 and 16, (shown in Figs. 1 and 2,) and which projects through the side of the cupboard at the top thereof in the same manner as the arm 16 in said figures. In this form of construction the rods 7 are pivoted in notches or recesses 22,
formed in the tops of the doors 6, and by operating the arm 21 the rods 7 are caused to open and close the doors 6, the same as in Figs. 1 and 2.
In Fig. 4 I have shown another modification, in which the rods 7 are pivotally connected with the bottom of the doors 6, the same as in Figs. 1 and 2, but in which the inner ends of said rods are pivotally connected with an arm or lever 23, pivoted to the bottom of the cupboard at 24, and one of the doors 6 is provided with a knob 25. By pulling outwardly on said knob both of the doors will be opened at the same time, and by pushing inwardly on said knob both of said doors will be closed at the same time.
In each of the modifications herein shown and described I employ the rods 7, which are of the same length, and pivotally connect the inner ends thereof with an arm or lever, which is pivotally supported at one side of the pivotal connection of said rods, and the operation of said arm or lever either directly or indirectly opens and closes the doors.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cupboard, cabinet or similar device provided with hinged doors, rods pivotally connected with said doors at one end, the inner ends of which are pivotally connected by a single pivot-pin, and a lever or arm which is also pivotally connected with the inner ends of said rods by the same pivot-pin, said lever or arm being pivotally connected with a horizontal portionof the cupboard or cabinet, substantially as shown and described.
2. A cupboard, cabinet or similar device provided with hinged doors, rods of equal length pivotally connected with the bottoms of said doors and projecting into said cupboard, cabinet or similar device, the inner ends of said rods being directly and pivotally connected, and a lever or arm pivoted to the bottom of the cupboard adjacent to the inner ends of said rods and also pivotally connected with the inner ends of said rods, substantially as shown and described.
3. A cupboard, cabinet or similar device provided with hinged doors, rods of equal length pivotally connected with the bottoms of said doors and projecting into said cupboard, cabinet or similar device, the inner ends of said rods being directly and pivotally connected, and a lever or arm pivoted to the bottom of the cupboard adjacent to the inner ends of said rods and also pivotallyconnected with the inner ends of said rods, and means for operating said lever or arm, substantially as shown and described.
4. A cupboard, cabinet or similar device provided with hinged doors, rods of equal length pivotally connected with one end of said doors and projecting into said cupboard, cabinet or similar device, and the inner ends of which are pivotally connected, and a lever or arm pivotally supported adjacent to the inner ends of said rods and pivotally connected therewith, and means for operating said lever or arm, consisting of a link pivotally connected therewith, a vertical shaft mounted inside of one side of said cupboard, cabinet or similar device, and provided with an arm with which said link is pivotally connected, substantially as shown and described.
5. A cupboard, cabinet or similar device provided with hinged doors, rods pivotally connected with the bottoms thereof and projectin g inwardly and pivotally connected at their inner ends, a lever pivotally supported adjacent to the inner ends of said rods and pivotally connected therewith, a link pivotally connected with said lever, a vertical shaft, an arm connected with said shaft and with said link, means for operating said shaft, and a stop for limiting the outward movement of said rods, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 16th day of March, 1899.
ANTHONY P. LIPINSKI.
