LEVI STEVENS, OF FITCHBURG. MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 63,667, (late cl April 9, 1867.
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR CABIBURETTING AIR TO PRODUCE INFLAMMABLE GAS.
W113 gtlgaulenferra in it time germ tlltl t and mating and mi flge nmte.
Be it known that I, LEVI STEVENS, of Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massaehusetts, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Oarburetting Air for Producing Inflammable Gas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of one ehd of the machine; and
Figure 5 is a view of the opposite end.
Figure 3 is a side view.
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the apparatus or machine.
Figure 2 represents the inside of the tank A; and
Figure 6 represents the inside of the tank B.
C is a horizontal cylinder, which contains a meter-wheel that revolves in gasoline or other liquid suitable for carburetting air, and also sheets or disks of wire cloth or other material suitable for tlie-distribution of the gasoline, so as to present a large surface to the air that it may be carburetted properly for use. it are disks of wire cloth, attached to the axis of the meter-wheel. These may be increased in number, and sheets of wire cloth may be so placed in the buckets of the meter-wheel as to-obtain a large quantity of evaporating surface. Other material may be used as a substitute for wire cloth for the purposes of aiding evaporation. e is a drum, by means of which power is applied for moving the meter-wheel. 7t 7t are gearing-s, connecting the drum c with the shaft of the meter-wheel m. llrcpresent the meter-whccl. 0 is a pipe for introducing the air into the machine. The air thus introduced passes first into the chamber h, which is connected with the tank 13. The air then passes through the passages q g, which may be filled with fibrous material or other substance designed to aid in carburetting the air. The air then passes into the chanibcr r and to the tube or pipe .9, and is thus introduced within the casettof the meter-wheel. By means of an apparatus hereafter to be described the gasoline is kept at a certain line in the meter-wheel case, which line should be near the centre thereof. The revolutions of the wheel, arranged as described, bring the air in contact with a great extent of vaporizing surface. The air, thus carburctted, passes into the chamber at, thence through the tube a into the tank A. w is a tortuous passage in the tank A, which may be filled with fibrous material for the purpose of further aiding in the process of carburetting the air. The air, thus carburettcd, is ready for use. The delivery pipe is not shown upon the drawings, but it should be connected with the tank A. The gasoline is introduced into the tank A through the tube a; it then passes into the chamber :6, and thence through the tube y into the chamber The chamber .2 is connected with chamber 1) by a small opening, which is controlled by a flowage regulator, by means of which the gasoline is kept at the required heightin the case of the. metenwheel. F is a float. E is the case containing the float. f is an air pipe which connects the case of the mcter-whccl with the case E. d is a pipe which connects the lower part of the case E with the lower part of the case of the meter-wheel, so that the gasoline is always at the same level in both chambers. The float F rests upon the gasoline. g is a lever, connected withthe bottom of the flout F. This lever is attached to the rod 7L, which is furnished with a valve adapted to the openingin the partition between the chamber .2 and the chamber 6. This valve is kept in place, so as to exclude the flow of gasoline into the chamber 5, by means of a spiral spring, j. When, however, the gasoline falls below the desired level in the meter-wheel case andvin the float case E, the float F falls, the lever 9 draws back the red It, and the valve is opened for the flow oigasoline. When the gasoline rises in the caseE the weight of the float is withdrawn from the lever, and the valve, by the aid of the spiral spring, is closed. I do not claim the meter-wheel, nor its use, for the purpose of forcing air into evaporator-s or generators of gas machines, nor for the purpose of drawing air into or through such machines, but I clainr the use of the meter-wheel for the purpose of carburetting atmospheric air in the manner substantially as described.
I also claim the fiowage regulator, constructed of the several parts specified and arranged substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
