UN TED T'ATES- PATENT @nrrcs.
JAMES REAGAN, or PIIDILADEILPIIIA, PENNSYLVANIA:
G RATE.
srscmcamon forming part of Letters seem so. censor, dated Qctober e1, 1899.
Application filed January 6. 1899. Serial No. 701,383. HOW
To all w/umb it m rmuv'I-n:
lie it known that I, JAMESREA(lAN,acltlZel1 of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsyl- 5 vnnia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to grates oi the rock iug-bartypo, itsprineipal object beingto keep to the bed of fuel which is carried by the grate free from the clinker and ashes that would retard the a mission of air to the combustionclnnuhor and to render the operation of the cncppcrs, wnica are borne hy t..c rocking bars, easy of accomplishment.
The aforesaid objects are attained by the use of "eating choppers of peculiar construction in connection with coaetingelcmcnts,as will hereinafter appear.
:o The exact nature of the invention will he understood bya perusal of the following dctuiled description in connection with the several appended claims.
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a grate embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on the lineA ll of Fig. 1.?
Fig. 3 represents achopper detached from its bar. Figs. 4 and 5 show spanncrs through the medium of which the bars are rocked. Fig;
(l is a view of a portion of one ofthe-rocking liars. Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view of a fragment of a bar and chopper.
' A is the entire frame of the grate, having within it two rows of chopper-bars A A,
3 5 which are separated hyastationary cross-bar B, having cutting edges b b.
C C are the end bars of the grate-frame, which are provided with cutting edges 0 c.
l) are the choppers, each of which consists c of an elongated body of suitable material,
provided with downwardly-flared clearanceopenings (1 for the passage of ashes, lateral clinker-crushing teeth (1', and end cutters 12 each provided with a downwardly-projocting cutting edge (1, which in the operation of the choppers coi'iperatcs with one of the upwardlyprojccting cutting edges]; b c c upon the middle and end cross-liars. By the use of this construction I am enabled to readily 5o crush, cut, or dislodge all clinkers which are caught between the choppers and the middle,
end, and intermediate bars of tho grate-frame and to cut away and remove all ashes and masses of cli-ukers which form in the lower layers of the incandescent fuel. ltachehopper has a recess (1, which is angular in crosssection and eorrcs mnds in shape to the au= gular portions 0 of the rocking bars it. This recess is somewhat larger than the angular portion of the bar, so as to admit of consid- 6o erahlo incremental the chopper on the bar and to provide for the floating oil'ect of the chopper, to which I have ulreaoy referred. 'ihin construction iscspoeially useful in conv own-v... ....v v y v movements of the choppers when they are shaken in the usual manner and a consequent thcrough'agitation ot' the fuel in all directions and also because it allows large pieces of clinker to pass between the choppers, which may readily move in opposite directions to afford a large space between them for that purpose.
A still further advantage of the universal v and free mounting, of the choppers is that when actuated they do not have to he moved together as a dead weight, for as they will necessarily stand in various slightly-different positions motion will be successively impart ed to. them as the operating-lever isactuated. This fact renders the shaking of the grate comparatively easy of accomplishment. 7 Each gratehar E- is provided with cy1indrical portions a, whose d iameters are smaller than um entrance (1 cl. any of the recesses (1" of the choppers. so that the choppers may be placed upon the rocking bars and slipped into engagement with the angular portiouse thereof, which look them in radial position.
F 1*" are spanncrs of an ordinary type, the long ones, l being connected with the usual shaking-lever I and the short. ones, F, being united to the long ones by links N.
All of the spanncrs are provided with recesses f f, which adapt the spaunemto he rec locked upon the angular portions of the gratebars in the same manner that the choppers in the particular that it admits of universal 7o inn-am... Mew-1M.
2 censor are secured thereon, with the distinction, however, that there is little or no play or looseness;
upon the hers, as in the case of the choppers. K are stationary bars alternating with the choppers.
. The operation of the grate willbe apparent from the foregoing description and need not be further described.
Having thus fully described nrvinvention,
what I claim is- I 1. The combination of a series ofgrete-hsrs,
.a' set of fleeting choppers mounted on each of .pers, substantially as described. v
4. The combination of-& series of angularea grico-fialu each provided at: tervsis with re= duccd or cylindrical portions, and a series of floating choppers mounted on said berseach chopper having an open socket conforming to the shs'peoi the hers, the entrance to said socket being wider than'the diameters of the reduced or cylindrical portions, and narrower than a diagonal of the bars, substantially as described.
The combination of e series of angular grate-bars each provided at intervalswith re dnced or cylindrical portions, and a series of floating choppers sud 'spsnners mounted on said bars each having an open socket conforming to the shape of the hars, the entrance to said socket beingwider then the diameters of the reduced or cylindrical portions, and
narrower than a diagonal of thc hers, substsntislly as described.
'6. The combination of aseries ofgrate-bars, and s set of fldnting choppers mounted on each of es-id hers, substantially as described.
7. Achopper for grates consisting of an elonssted body having at its ends downweirdly-projecting cnttingedges i in combination with s gratis-frame haying upwardlyprojecting cutting edges arranged to coact with the downwardly-projectingcuttingedgcs of the chopper, substantially as described.
8. A chopper for grates consisting of an elongated body having at its ends downwsrdly-prcjeciing cutting edges d, eind interior clearance-spaces, d, in combination with s grate-frame provided with upwardly-pro- 3ccting setting edges c c snbstentzelly es de scribed;
