DRAFT-EQUALIZER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,360, dated October 24, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. TINSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Island, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawing accompanying and forming a part of the specification, in

which the figure is a plan showing the draftequalizer attached to a plow beam.

This invention relates to certain improvements in draft-equalizers; and it is peculiarly adapted to eveners for four or more horses, wherein it is desirable for any reason to attach the evener to the plow or other machine or vehicle to be drawn at a point other than the normal center of draft. Its construction and mode of operation are fully set forth in the following specification and claims.

In the drawing, A represents the plowbeam, and B a four-horse evener, which is attached to the plow-beam by the clevis O in the ordinary way, but at the point a at one side of its center. To the longer arm b of the evener B is clevised the doubletree D in the ordinary way with its whiffletrees W W. The evener bears near the end of its shorter arm I) the horizontally-mounted sheave S, and also the corresponding sheave s, also horizontally mounted a short distance from the point a on the longer arm. The chain or cord 0' is attached to the plow-beam at any convenient point, as O, to the rear of the point a, carried around the sheave s in front and the sheave S behind, as shown in the drawing, terminating in the ring R, to which is clevised the doubletree d, which is provided with whiffletrees W W.

In practice I make the sheave s with as small a diameter as possible, as I find that construction gives the best results.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination, in a draft-equalizer, an evener having its attaching-point to one side of the center of draft, draft devices at each end of said evener, a connection between one of the devices and the evener, and a connection between the other device and the object to be drawn to the rear of its connection with said evener, substantially as described.

2. In combination, the evener, adapted to have the load connected thereto to one side of the center of the draft, draft devices lo= cated at each end of said evener, a connection between one of said devices and the evener, and a cable or chain secured at one end to the load and at its opposite end the other draft device, said chain or cable having an inter mediate connection with said evener, substantially as described.

A draft-equalizer comprising the evener B, having its point of attachment to the plow or other object to be drawn at one side of the center of draft, the horizontal sheaves 8 and S on the evener, the chain c passing over said sheaves and attached at one end to the plowbeam at the rear of its point of attachmentto the evener, the doubletree 01 attached to said chain at its opposite end at the shorter end of said evener, the doubletree D and the whiffietrees as shown and set forth.
