Be it known that I, J oHN M. HOLMES, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Glens Falls, county of Warren, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which ysimilar letters and iigures of reference indicate co1'- responding parts.

This invention relates to improvements in barrel-covers, the object thereof being to provide an efficient device for temporarily covering the barrel after its head is removed, whereby the barrel is maintained in a closed condition to protect its contents.- The device is so constructed that when attached to the barrel the same may be readily opened and closed for the purpose of removing a portion of the contents thereof Yat intervals, and it can be readily transferred from an empty to a full barrel as often as desired because of its'durability and structural simplicity.

The invention .will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth' in the annexed claims.

'In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved barrel-cover, showing the same attached to a barrel, the lower portion ofthe barrel beingbroken away. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View showing the barrel in crossasection, and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation taken on the line a: of Fig. l.

In the practice of myinvention I provide primarily a circular cover A, comprising the two parts av and a', the part d being of an area considerably less than the part ai to permit of ready access to the barrelwhen the lid is open. These two said parts are connected to each other by means of hinges a2, and they comprise, respectively, sections Aai' 'and d, connected by means of dowels c5 and a. Around the periphery of the cover I form an annular groove a7, which provides the respective parts d and ct',with channels to receive retainingwires 2 and 8, the respective ends of which are wound around nails or similar projections 4 and 5, driven into the two inner sections of the cover parts, whereby rigidity is supplied Serial No. 693,281. To connect the device to a barrel, a clamping device B is supplied and connected to the under surface of the section d' by means of the hanger Y C. This said clamping device comprises a series of prongs D, engaging hangers o7. and pivotally attached at their inner ends to an oscillating arm E, which is pivotally attached to the han ger C, by means oiV the spindle c. This saidv arm E has a lever E extended at an angle from one endihereof for the purpose of throwing the arm E, as illustrated by Fig. 2 of the drawings. Thus when the arm is placed in horizontal position f or parallel with the inner edge of the section d of the cover the prongs D are forced outwardly to the fullest extent, permitting their sharp ends to penetrate the inner wall of the barrel l,- as illustrated by dotted lines, Fig. 2, ofthe drawings, whereby the device is se curely fastened to the barrel and the portion thereof occupied by the section a is in an open condition to admit of ready access to the barrel when the said section 0r is opened upon its hinges. Vshen removing-the device from the barrel, the clampis thrown into the position illustrated by full lines, Fig. 2 of the drawings, thus releasing the prongs from the barrebstaves and allowing the device to be readily removed for the purpose of attachingA it to another barrel, if desired, and the device is placed in this said position normally before it is attached to the barrel. n

The section u. is preferably supplied upon its upper vsurface with a receptacle A', said receptacle comprising a segmental wall A2, a vertical or approximately vertical Wall A3, and a hinged lid A, the wall A3 being supplied with a transparent window A5, adapted to exhibit the contents of the receptacle.

In the operation and use of the device ai"- ter the barrel-head is removed the lid is attached thereto, as illustrated in the drawings. A portion of the contents of the barrel is then placed in the receptacle A' for the purpose barrel through the medium of the glass plate A5 without the necessity of exposing the said contents to thc action of the atmosphere or to liability of receiving extraneous matter, such as dust, duc. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s-

l. In a barrel-closing device, the combination of a cover comprising a plate divided into two parts or sections hinged together, and a clamping device, secured to the under side of one of said sections and adapted to engage the interior of the barrel, saidy clamping device consisting of a hanger secured to said section, an oscillating lever pivoted in one end of said hanger, a pointed arm pivoted in one end of said lever, two similar pointed arms both having the same pivot connected to said lever at the same point, and guides secured to the under side of the section to guide the pointed arms and hold them in place.r

2. In a barrel-cover, the combination of a sectional plate; a clamping device secured to the under side of one section thereof and con-y sistin g of a hanger secured to said section, an oscillating lever pivoted in one yend of said hanger, a pointed armpivoted in one endfol;` said lever, two similar pointed arms both having the same pivot connected to said lever, and guides secured to the under side of the section to guide the pointedy arms and hold them in place; and an exhibiting-compartment secured tothe upper surface of said section and provided with a hinged lid anda transparent wall t0 exhibit the contents.

3. In a barrel-closing device, the combinaf tion of a plate divided into two sections,which are composed rof sections held together by dOWels and peripherally-attached wires, one section being of a larger area than the other, the said sections being hinged together, and a clamping device secured yto the under side of the smaller section to engage the interior of the barrel, said clamping device consisting of a hanger secured to said section, an oscil-y JOHN M.
