Be it known that; I, TAYLOR W. HEINTZEL Y grate which shall be readily and edectively operative by the reman while the engine is running and which shall be exempt from liability to permit the dropping of hot coals yor cinders upon the right of way or bridges on the line.
To this end my invention, generally stated, consists in the combination of an ash-pau body formed of one or more open-topped sections, each having a lower discharge-opening, valve-seats, each having one or more air-v supply openings and fixed to the sides of the body, air-valves, controlling the openings of the valveseats, and means for simultaneously actuating the air-valves.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.

My invention is herein shown as applied in 'connection with a locomotive ash-panof the construction for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 620, 7 O7 were granted and issued to me under date of March 7 ,1899; but it is not limited in application to that or any other specific form of locomotive ash-pan. The
body of the ash-pan is, as insaid Letters Patent, shown in the form of'three connected hopper-sections l 1 1, each of which is open at its top to receive solid matter which may be dropped from a fire-box, below which the ash-pan is located in the usual manner and is downwardly and inwardly tapered toward a discharge-openin g 2 at its lower end, around which is secured a guide-frame 3, in which a discharge-slide 6, which governs the disf y charge-opening, is fitted to traverse. The ash-pan is secured to the top rails of the engine-frame 14 or may be supported in any other suitableand preferred manner.

In the practice ofmy present invention an air-supply opening 23 or a plurality of said openings are formed in the sides of the hoppersections l of the ash-pan, and the opening or openings ou each side are surrounded by a valve-seat 24, riveted or bolted to the side lplatevand having openings registering with the air-supply openings.- An air-valve 25 is fitted to traverse over and control each opening or set of openings, and the several airvalves on each side of the ash-pan are coupled one to the other by links or connectingrods 26, so as to be movable coincideutly to Wholly or partially cover or uncover the airsupply openings, as may be desired. The connecting-rods of the two sides are coupled at their ends bya cross-bar 27, to which any suitable mechanism for actuating the airy valves from a conveniently-accessible point, preferably the foot-plate of the engine, is counected. In the instance exemplified Opening and closing movement is coinoidently imparted to theentire set of airfvalves by means of a fluid-pressure cylinder 28, provided with a suitably-packed piston, the rod 29 of which is connected to the cross-bar 27. which is preferably located in the cab of the engine, so that the air-valves may be conveniently opened or closed by the fireman, as may from time to time be desired, while the engine is running. f
