. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,558, dated October 10, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that- I, CHARLES R. HARLEss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tabor, in the county of Fremont and State of. Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Trips for Cultivators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates ,to improvements in cultivators, and more particularly to that class in which the shovel-point instead of being pivoted to the beam is connected thereto by a spring-actuated hinge-joint, so as to spring back in'passing over an obstruction and be restored to its normal position after the obstruction is passed; and the object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, practical, and'efiicient device for this purpose.
To these ends the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will .be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cultivator, showing my improved spring-trip attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is another view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on line 3 3 of Fig. I. Fig. 4: is a detail view of the lever-bracket O, and Fig. 5 is a similar View of the limit-bolt F,

A denotes the cultivator-beam, and B de, notes the shovel point or blade, terminating at its upper end in a shoe b, which is pivoted to the lower end of the beam on the fulcrumbolt a, and 1) denotes a transverse limitpin which abuts against the rear edge of the beam, as is shown in Fig. 2, to limit the rearward movement of the shoe 6, and consequently the shovel-standard and shovel-point.
' C denotes a triangular lever-bracket, consisting of two counterpart plates 0 c, fulcrumed to the beam on the bolt 0 and connected to the shoe (9 by the bar D, the upper end of which is pivoted to the bracket 0 by the rivet-bolt d, and its lower end is formed with the adjusting-holes d cl to receive the Serial No. 709,061. (No model.)

E denotes a curved rod, its lower end terminaiing in an enlarged head e, pivoted in the bracket 0 on the rivet-bolt e, and E denotes a guide-block for the free end of said rod, fixed to the beam, and F aspiral spring encompassing said rod between its head a and the guide-block E. The triangular plate 0 is formed with a-slot 0 one of the Walls 0 of which is transversely serrated, as shown, and the corresponding plate 0 is provided with an alined slot 0 F denotes a limit-bolt formed with asquare shoulder f, one of the sides of which is formed with a'lateral tooth f to engage the serrated wall of the slot 0 so that the bolt may be adjusted up and down in said slot.
G denotes a spring-metal washer encompassing the threaded end of the bolt F, and it is formed with inwardly-projecting ears g g, which have a sliding engagement with the flanged walls of the slot 0 and its outer face is formed with a spring-tooth g to engage the ratchet teeth h on the lock-nut H.
It will be noted that the lock-nut H is formed with a cylindrical collar H, which bears against the contiguous face of the springwasher G. This makes suflicient space between the nut and washer to permit the operator to insert a suitable implement and spring the 'tooth g back or out of mesh with the ratchet-teeth 72., so that the nut can be easily removed when desired.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the bolt 01 is to the right of a straight line drawn between the pivot-bolt c and pin d Consequently any undue strain. on the plowpoint B-as, for instance, when it strikes a root or rock-the parts will assume the position shown in Fig. 2, and when the obstruc-' tion has been passed the spring will restore the plow-point to its normal position.
It will be noted that the bolt F is formed with a shoulder, as shown,which abuts against theinner face of the plate 0 to retain it the proper distance from the plate 0.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form,proportion,and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the curved beam A, the shoe 1) pivoted to said beam and carrying the shovel-point, the limit-pin b fixed in said shoe, the spring-actuated lever-bracket G fulcrumed on the beam, and the bar D pivotally connecting said shoe and bracket, substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the beam, the shoe b and bracket G pivoted thereto, the bar D connecting'said shoe and bracket, the bolt F adjustably secured in said bracket, the guideblock E" fixed to the beam, the curved rod E pivoted at one end to said bracket, and having a sliding engagement with said block, and the spiral spring encompassing said rod between the guide-block and bracket, substantially as described.
3. In a spring-trip attachment for cultivators, the combination with the triangular bracket 0 pivoted on the cultivator-beam and provided with the slot 0 formed with the serrated wall 0", of the bolt F formed with the square shoulder f and lateral tooth f the nutlock washer G, and the nut H formed with the ratchet-teeth h,substantially as described.
4:. In combination with the bracket 0 formed with the flanged Walls and slot 0 of the bolt F formed with the threaded end, the Washer G mounted on said bolt and formed with the parallel ears g g embracing the flanged walls of said slot 0 and formed with a spring-tooth g, and the nut H formed with a cylindrical portion H, and the ratchet-teeth h arranged to receive said spring-tooth g, substantially as shown and described.
