TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, P. L. WEST of Bath, in the county of Mason,
and State of Illinois, have. invented certain new arid useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a. plan oi the improved cultivator.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional elevation of it, taken on the line xg/ in g. 1.
This invention relates, firstly, to the manner of connecting the plougl arrangement for giving the ploughs lateral motion; and thirdly, the ground. I
Io enable those skilled in the art to make and use my improved cultiv construction and operation. l A is the framework on which all other parts of the machine are built. On each side of this frame there is a metallic arm, on which is placed a wheel, B, for supporting and transporting the machine. 'lhese metallic arms should be ot' cast metal, and in such a form that they may be readily bolted to the frame A. by means ot' anges on their back ends, or slots cut therein. The swinging bar C is placed inside of the frame A, near its forward end, and connected with it by means ofthe two linlis a. On'top of each of the side beams of the frame A there is a lever, C', pivoted to it at c, so that the ends of the said levers will have a lateral motion. The forward ,ends of these levers are connected with the links a by means of the connecting-rods C2. vThe back ends of the levers C are connected by means of the straps c with the treadle bars C3, the forward ends of which bars are hinged to the bottom sides of the side beams of the frame A iu such a manner that they may receive a slight vertical motion.. The straps c, in passing from the levers O1 to thetreadle bars C3, are conducted outn side of the frame A, when they pass over pulleys at the point where the horizontal direction of them is` changed to a vertical direction. As the driver of this machine is seated on the seat S he will place his feet on the back ends of the treadles C3, which project inside of the frame A sufciently to allow foot room for this purpose. i The driver can, by pressing down either foot at pleasure, cause the back end of the lever Cl, which is connected with the treadle pressed down, to move laterallv outward toward the wheel B on that side of the is to the frame; secondly, to the to the devices for lifting the ploughs upout of autor, I will proceed to describe its J frame. This motion of' the said lever will be transmitted to the swinging bar C through the medium of the cminecring-links a and connecting-rods C2. As both of the forward ends of the levers Cl are connected with the swinging bnr C, the motions of thetwo levers, as aforesaid, will be in harmony with each other, and the two treadles Ca will both move at the same time, but in opposite directions, that is, when one treadleis moved downward the other one will move upward at the same time. The two ploughs D are intended to travel inside ofthe traine A, and the forward ends of their beams are connected by means of the curved metal draught-rods d with the swinging bur C. The two posts d1 of these ploughs are connected together by meane of the links d2, so that the two plouglis will uniformly remain the same distance apart. As the driver sits upon his seat he can easily grasp with his hands the handles cl3 of these ploughs, which are thereby rendered wholly under his control. i In order to guidethe ploughs D in a lateral or diagonal direction, so as to accommodate the sinuosities of the rows of plants being cultivated, all the driver will have to do will be to press with one or the other of his feet upon the ireadle on the opposite side of the machine to which he wishes to cause the ploughs to ru-n. This action will swing the har C to one side, as has already been described, and the plough beams will accordingly be led in the saine direction. When the driver wishes to raise the ploughs D up out of the ground he will do so by raising them np by means of the handles cZ 3, high enough to let the props d* drop on top of the crossbeam A ot' the supporting frame. When the ploughs are let down all that will be necessary will be to seize the props d* and draw them back`from their bearing on the beam In case it is desirable to turn upagreater breadth of soil than can be done by the ploughs D, I attach two more ploughs, D1, to the posts D2, the said posts being pirotcd to the frame A at the point tt a little in thegerear of the drivers seat. These ploughs and their posts are to be raised up out of the ground by means of'cords c25, passing from the said posts near their lower ends up to and over the pulleys d, and thence down tothe treadleld, which are in a suitable position for the driver to place his feet upon, which he will do, and press down thereon with his weight when he wishes to raise the snid ploughs. The segmental bars D3, attached to the frame A near or at their upper ends, extend thence down through a. mortise in the posts D2, and o. pin or lug, d8, placed at a. proper point in the snid curved bars behindthe posts D2, will prevent the said posts and their ploughs from going further hack then they should, and hold them to their work. The ploughs D1 may be shovel-plonghs.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The construction und :Li-rangement herein shown and described of the ploughs D D, and their attaehment links d2, Vand their ldrzmght-rods d.
2. I claim the device C, a, Cl, C, C", and c', for giving the ploughs I) the requisite lateral motion.
3. I claim the combinationand construction ofthe posts dl and the props di siibst-.Lnti-.Llllyr as described und set forth.
4. I claim the construction and arrangement of the ploughs D1 and curved bars D3; also the device d5, d5, and @Z7 for raising the said ploughs up out of the ground, substantially as described and set forth.
P. L. WEST.
