ing the saw in perfect line with the 10g-car-r riage and track, thereby causing the saw to enter the log perfectly straight and in line therewith, and to provide a guide which may be used in connection with the usual sawguide, so as to enable the manufacturer to use much thinner saws, thus effecting a considerable saving in the quantity of timber-converted into sawdust as well as power to driveV the saws.
Other objects of the invention are to provide means for raising and lowering the guide to adapt the same for saws of different diameter; to provide means for suspending the arms which carry the guide-pins or guiding devices, so that the arm may not be broken off in case the arm should come in Contact with the log or knot or any other obstacle, and at the same time permit the guide-pins to have lateral movement in order that the same willl not come in contact with the edge of the sawteeth when automatically returned to their normal position; to provide means for cooling and lubricating the guiding-devices and saw to prevent heating; to provide means for adjusting the devices laterally, and means for attaching the saw-guide to the saw frame or husk.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication, and then pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawings, wherein similar figures of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of device embodying :my invention, the usual iiXed guide being merely suggested and indicated by a pin in cross-section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the saw-frame, taken on the line II II of Fig. I, the usual guide being merely suggested. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line III III of Fig. I. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on the line IV IV of Fig. 2, the guide-frame being removed from the saw-frame. Fig. 5 is a front view of the guide'frame as shown in Fig. 4L. The saw frame or husk l0 may comprise beams or sleepers ll and the base-plates 12, which are provided with suitable bearingsl, in which the arbor or mandrel 14 of the saw 15 is journaled, said saw bein g provided with the usual or any suitable form of iixed or `other guides, as I6, to guide the saw in the usual manner. Intermediate the bearings I3 and around the saw arbor or mandrel 14 is a bearing 17, in which the tubular hub or base 1S of the guide-frame arm 19 is adapted to rotate. This guide-frame arm is provided with -a lug 20, which connects by a link or connecthave the usual spring-pressed locking-bolt 25, which is connected to thethumb-piece 26, by
which the said lever may be held in various positions in the usual manner,and by which lever, through the connecting-rod 21, the guideframe arm I9 may be held in different positions. The guide-frame arm 19, as will be seen, is journaled in the bearing around the saw arbor or mandrel and is normally held in a vertical position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and in said arm is a slot 27, in which is arranged a bolt or stud 2S, on which is held a movable arm 29, forming a portion of the guide-frame and which is normally held on the bolt 2S against the disk or washer 30 by the nut 3l, arranged on the inner screwthreaded end of said bolt, the bolt being pro- IOO vided with a beveled head which fits a sochet in the washer 30 and is held in position by means of a hand-nut or wrench 32, the latter having a screw-threaded hub fitting the outer screw-threaded end of the bolt 28. Between the washer 30 and the arm 2f) is agear33, the teeth of which meshes with the rack 34, arranged on the guide-frame arm lf), so that when the hand-nut 3; is released and the gear rotated by hand, a wrench, or otherwise the arm 20 may be elevated tothe desired extent. This arm 29 is provided with a pendent portion 35, which is connected to the handlever 22 by the connecting-rod 3G, by which means when the hand-lever 22 is shifted on its pivot 23 to move the guide-frame arm If) the arm 29 will beheld in substantially a vertical position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l.
For the purpose of supporting` the guidepins or other guiding devices and for shifting the same laterally the arm 29 is provided with an elongated hub or socket-piece at its upper end, in which is arranged the shaft 37, the latter being provided with a key or feather 3S, adapted to fit a groove in the hub of the arm 29, so as to prevent rotary movement of the shaft 37, and which will permit the latter to be shifted laterally or lengthwise of the hub. The shaft 37 is provided with a screwthreaded outer end 39, which engages the threaded hub of a hand-wheel 40. The handwheel 40 is held on the hub of the arm 2f) by by a split ring 4I, which is held to the hub of the hand-wheel by screws and has its inner edge engaging a groove in the hub of the arm 29, so as to rotatably hold the hand-wheel on said arm, but which when rotated,'the threads thereof engaging the threads 39 of the shaft 37, will shift the latter in either direction, according to the direction of its rotation.
The shaft 37 is provided at suitable points with fixed collars 4l, adjustably held thereto by set-screws, and around the shaft 37 are spiral springs 42, which abut against the inner surface of the collars 4l at one end and at the other end engage the hubs 43 of the guidepin supporting arms 44, so as to normally force the said arms toward each other along the said shaft. The arms 44 are each provided with pendent portions 45, in which are arranged guide pins or bolts 4G. These guidepins are tubular and have apertures 46H11 the heads 47 of said guide-pins adjacent to the surface of the saw l5, and said pins each have a screw-threaded stein 4S, by which the guide pins or bolts are adjustably held to the pendent portions of the arms 44 and are locked thereto by the nuts 49. The tubular stems 48 of the guide pins or bolts are connected by fiexible or other tubes 50, which unite and connect with a flexible or other tube 5l, the latter being connected to a suitable source of supply, by which water may be caused to pass through said tubes to the guide pins or bolts and through the apertures 46 of said guide-pins, so as to prevent heating of the saw by friction caused by the guidepins and to serve as a lubricant for the saw, though instead of water any other suitable lubricant or a cooling medium, as air, or both a cooling and lubricating medium, may be supplied to the guide-pins.
In case a log should be of sufficient size so as to come in contact with pendent portions of the arms 44 it is necessary that some provision be made to permit the arms to allow the log to pass by the same and to prevent the guidepins from coming in contact with the saw-teeth when they automatically return by gravity to their normal position. To accomplish this, the arms 44 are loosely held on the shaft 37 and normally retain a pendent Vertical position, and interposed between the inner surface of the hubs 43 of the arms 44 are the cams 52, secured to the shaft 37. These cams 52 are provided with cam-grooves which are normally engaged by a tooth or projecting portion 54- of the arms 44, so that when the arms are shifted by coming in contact with the log the projections 54 of the arms 44 will ride on the surface of the camgrooves 53, so as to shift the arms and guidepins laterally away from the saw, as shown more clearly in Fig. 7.
The construction and manner of using thc invention will be readily understood froln the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Assuming the parts to be in position shown in full lines in the several figures, it will be seen that by loosening the handnut 32 the guide pins or bolts 4G, through the shaft 37 and arm 29, may be elevated by rotating the gear 33 around the shaft 28, in which position the ar 29 may be held by said hand-nut, while a lateral movement of the shaft 37 and guide-pins 4G in either direction may be obtained by simply rotating the hand-wheel 40, as hereinbefore explained. Should it be desired to bring the guide pins or bolts 46 of what I term the upper guide, together with the supporting-arms 44, closer to the usual lower or fixed guide, I secure this by shifting the hand-lever 22 to the position shown in dot-ted lines in Fig. l.
I thus provide simple and efficient means by which the saw is guided before it enters the log or cut and by which, if the saw should become heated by friction, the distance between the upper and lower guide may be made so short that the line of the saw would be practically straight, thereby causing it to enter the log in perfect line, thus reducing the liability to further friction and heat, and saws of much thinner gage can be used, so as to enable the manufacturer of lumber from the the log or in resawing to make more lumber from a given quantity of logs and toincrease the capacity of the mill without materially increasing the power by which the mill is operated.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a saw and the usual or lower guide, of an upper guide, a guide-frame arm rotatably held to a suitable support, and a guide-supporting arm carrying the upper guide and rotatably held to the guide-frame arm.
2. The combination with the circular saw of an upper guide adapted to engage the surface of the saW, a guide-frame arm rotatably held to a suitable support, and a guidesupl porting arm carrying the upper guide and rotatably held to the guide-frame arm.
3. In a device of the character described, a saw, a saw-frame, a guide-frame arm' rotatably held to a suitable support, a guide-supporting arm carrying the upper guide and rotatably held to the guide -frame arm, and means for supplying a cooling medium to said upper guide.
4. In a saw-guide, the combination with a guide-frame arm adapted to be oscillated, a guide-supporting arm rotatably held to the guide-frame arm, and means for elevating the guide-supporting arm on the guideaframe arm.
5. In a saw-guide, the combination with a guide-frame arm adapted to be oscillated, a guide-supporting arm held to theguide-frame arm, and means forsupportingthe guide-supporting .arm in substantially a vertical position when the guide-frame arm is shifted in its bearings.

7. -In a device of the character described, a suitable support, a guide-frame arm adapted to oscillate in said support and provided with a rack, a gear in mesh with the rac-k, a second arm movable with the gear, and means for oscillating the guide-frame arm in its bearing and for retaining` the guide-supporting arm in substantially a vertical position, substantially as described.

In a device of the character described, the combination With a suitable support, of a guide-frame arm adapted to oscillatein said support, a guide-supporting arm pivotally held to the guide-frame arm, a hand-lever, and rods connecting the guide-frame arm to the guide-supporting arm and the hand-lever, substantially as described.
9. In a saw-guide, the combination with a suitable support and a circular saW mounted thereon, ot'a guide-frame,a non-rotating shaft having longitudinal movement therein and provided at one end with a screw-thread, a hand-wheel rotatably held to the guide-frame engaging the screw-threads of the shaft, arms loosely arranged on the shaft, guiding means carried by the arms, and means for imparting lateral motion to the arms Whenthe latter lare rocked on the shaft, substantially as dc scribed.
ll. In a saw-guide, the combination With a shaft and a support therefor, of arms loosely arranged on the shaft, tubular guide pins or bolts adjustably held in the arms, means for supplying a cooling and lubricating medium to the guide-pins adapted to prevent friction between the surface of the guide-pins andthe saw, and means for imparting lateral movement to the arms when the latter are rocked on the shaft, substantially as described.
l2. A device of the character described, comprising a frame or support, a saw, a guideframe rotatably held in the support, means for rocking the guide-frame, a non-rotatable shaft carried by the guide-frame, means for moving the shaft laterally or longitudinally,
arms loosely arranged on the shaft, guiding means arranged in the arms, and means for imparting a lateral movement to the arms when the latter are rocked on the shaft, substantially as described.

A device of the character described, comprising a suitable support, a saw, a guideframe -comprising tWo rotatable members, means for Asimultaneously moving the two members of the guide-frame, a shaft carried by the guide-frame, means for moving the shaft laterally, arms loosely arranged on the shaft and normally spring-pressed toward each other, and a cam mechanism for moving the arms laterally when the latter are rocked on the shaft, substantially as described.

In a device of the character described, the combination With a shaft and a support therefor, of arms loosely arranged on the shaft, guiding means carried by the arms, and means for imparting a lateral movement to the guide-supporting arms when the latter are rocked on the shaft, substantially as described.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a shaft and a support therefor, of arms loosely arranged on the shaft, guide-pins adjustably held in the arms, springs arranged on the shaft and normally pressing the arms toward each other, and cam mechanism for imparting a lateral movement to the arms When the latter are rocked on the shaft, substantially as described.
I6. In a saw-guide, the combination of a shaft and a support therefor, of arms loosely vroo shaft when the arms are rocked or oseillated, substantially as described.
