Description

Patented Se t. 26, I899. w. 0. BEST.
FOLDING BOX.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM D. BEST, OF GREENSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING BOX.
EiPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,782, dated September 26, 1899.
Application filed September 15, 1897. Serial No. 651,744. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM D. BEST, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greensburg, in the county of IVestinoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding boxes, and has for itsobject to construct a box from a single piece of material cut so that it may fold and fasten to form a box and unfolded or spread out in the form of a blank at pleasure.
The invention consists in a blank of paper or other suitable material of peculiar form and slotted in a peculiar manner, whereby it is adapted to fold up to form a box.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved box and showing the blank in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top plan showing manner of fastening the cover. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a box with the lid constructed of a separate piece.
The sides 1 of the box are formed integral with the bottom and are provided with end extensions 3, having slits 9, rounded inner edges 3, and straight outer edges 3. The sides are also formed with side extensions 4, which are notched at their outer edge at a central point r to form rounded lips 4 and 43. Each of these extensions 4 is also formed with an end flap 7, the flap of one section 4: being at the end of the box opposite to that at which the flap 7 of the other section 4: projects.
The ends 2 of the box are each formed with a horizontal slot 5 and lips 8, the latter being adapted to enter the slits 9 of the extensions 3.
In folding the blank to form a box the side pieces 1 are bent up into a vertical position, their extensions 3 being folded inwardly to form the inner sections of the box ends, and their side extensions 4: being also folded inwardly to form a two-part cover for the box.
The ends 2 are then folded upwardly against the extensions 3, and their lips 8 are inserted into the slits 9 of said extensions to secure the latter and the ends 2 together. The rounded edges 3 of the parts 3 permit of their being easily folded inwardly, and their straight edges 3 rest flush with the top edges of the ends 2.
The lips 4 and 4c" of the cover-sections 4 overlap each other, as shown, the lip 45 of one section overlapping the lip 4 of the opposite section, the central notch 4 permitting this secure interlocking of the parts.
The end flaps 7 of the parts 4c are inserted into the slots 5 of the ends 2, and the parts are all thus securely fastened together. If desired, the box may be provided with a separate supplemental cover 10.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A box comprising a bottom having upwardly-extending sides formed integral therewith, an extension 3, rounded at its inner edge provided at each end of the said sides and adapted to be folded inwardly to form the inner ends of the box, said extensions having a slit 9, formed therein at the outer corner of the top thereof, end pieces 2, connected to the bottom and adapted to be folded against the said sides and inner ends, a pair of lips 8, formed integral with the said end pieces adapted to engage in the said slits 9, for securing the said end pieces in position,- the said end pieces being further provided with an elongated slot 5, an extension 4, formed integral with each of the said sides and forming the. top of the box, the said extensions 4, having one edge thereof notched to form the lips 4 and 4 of unequal size,
fastening-flaps 7 formed on each end of the said extensions 4, adapted to be inserted between the inner end 3, and the ends 2, and to engage in the elongated slot 5, for secur ing the extensions at, in position so that the lips 4 and n 'will overlap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
