TOBACCO-PIPE CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 632,445, dated September 5, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it kn own that I, JOHN CRAIG, J12, indiarubber manufacturer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 8 Wood street, Cheapside, in the city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipe Cleaners, (for which Ihave obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 16,85I, dated July 29, 1896,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to tobacco pipe cleaners in which air can be forced through the pipe by the breath of the user.
According to my invention I provide a cap consisting of a circular top or cover of indiarubber having a cylindrical portion, also of india-rubber, which is capable of rolling up to lie snugly around the edge of the circular top of the cap when the pipe-cleaner is out of use. The aforesaid cylindrical portion is adapted to fit with sufficient tightness around the exterior of the bowl of the pipe to form an airtight connection, so that when the breath is forced through the tube or mouthpiece it will only be able to escape through the stem of the pipe.
In order that my said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, I will proceed to describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 show sections of the improved tobacco-pipe cleaner, the former figure representing the pipe-cleaner open andthe latter, Fig. 2, representing it closed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a pipe with the pipecleaner applied thereto ready for use.

A is the cap of the pipe-cleaner, and B the tube or mouthpiece attached thereto. These parts are preferably formed in one piece and wholly of india-rubber. The aforesaid cap consists of a circular flat top a (which in the construction illustrated is slightly convex-on its under side) and of a flexible portion a, terminating at its lower edge in an enlarged or beaded rim a. The portion a is capable of being folded upon itself, as represented in Fig. 2, so that the rim a occupies a position close around one edge of the flat top a when the pipe-cleaner is out of use.
When the cleaner is to be used for cleansing a tobacco-pipe, it is applied While in the position represented in Fig. 2 to-the bowl 0 of the pipe, so that its convex top a lies upon the mouth thereof, and then the rolledup edge of the cleaner is caused to unroll around the pipe-bowl by a downward pressure exerted on said edge by the users fingers. The cleaner is thus caused to unfold and embrace the up per part of the pipe-bowl, as represented in Fig. 3, the rim a firmly clasping the said bowl, so as to produce an air-tight joint. The said cleaner is used while the pipe is properly alight. Then by placing the mouthpiece B in the mouth and blowing through it the hot smoke is caused to pass forcibly through the stem and mouthpiece of the pipe, thereby carrying with it and ejecting the nicotine and.
other deleterious deposits that may have ac= cumulated in the pipe.
If desired, the mouthpiece B may be made of vulcanite or other appropriate material and be connected to the cap A in any suit able manner.
What I claim is- 1. In a tobacco-pipe cleaner consisting of a disk for covering the mouth of the pipe-bowl and of a mouthpiece, the combination with the said disk of a folding rim or flange capable either of being rolled up to lie around the periphery of the said disk or of being unrolled to form a'depending flexible flange to effect an air-- tight closure around the pipe-bowl, substantially as specified.
2. In a tobacco-pipe cleaner consisting of a disk for covering the mouth of the pipe-bowl and of a flexible mouthpiece, the combination with the said disk of a folding rim or flange capable either of being rolled up to lie around the periphery of the disk or of being unrolled downward around the pipe-bowl to form a depending flexible flange, and of an extensible resilient head on the edge of such flange adapted to grip the pipe-bowl, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
