TRANSONl-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,326, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed March 3l, 1899.
To all whom. t may concern,.-
Be it known that we, JOSEPH SIEWERT and MICHAEL WIsNIEwsKI, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is tov provide a simple, economical, and efficient transomlifter; and the invention consists in the features, combinations, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front elevation of a transom supplied with our improvements; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same, shown partly in section, with the transom in its closed position; Fig. 3, a similar View showing the transom in a partiallyopen condition; and Fig. 4, a sectional elevation of a portion of the mechanism, taken on the line 4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
In'the art to which this invention relates it is well known that ordinarily transoms are frame, so that they turn on pivots, and are opened bymeans of lifting mechanism of various constructions. There are objections to this class of transoms and their lifting apparatus when used with large and heavy transoms, such as are used over the doors of mercantile establishments and stores, in that the entire weight of the door is taken upon two small pivots and the transom swings inside as well as outside.
The principal object of our invention, therefore, is to remove any of these objections which are found in connection with transoms of this large type and provide sustaining and lifting mechanism which will hold the transom in the desired positions and which is economical to construct and simple and eficient in operation, all of which will more fully hereinafter appear.
In constructing ourimprovements,as shown in the drawings, we use an ordinary supporting-frame A, having a door-opening a and provided with a frame B above the same. To sustain the frame in its dierent positions, we provide an inverted-U-shaped rock-shaft C, which has two depending arms c, to which the frame is pivotcd by means of the brack- Serial No. 711,248. (No model.)
ets C', that are secured to the door by means of ordinary wood-screws. From this construction it will be seen that the transom is swung out from its closed position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and that the heel c of the transom bears against the supporting-frame, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. AIn this way the frame can be made to open inwardlyinto the store-room entirely, and thus avoid the catching of the dirt and rain from the outside, and at the same time the weight of the heavy transom is divided between the rock-shaft and the frame, thus holding the frame at several points and more securely than when it is merely held upon two pivots, while at the same time the transom is much more readily inserted into position or removed therefrom whenever occasion requires or necessity demands.
To lift the transom and hold it in its various positions, we provide a lifting-rod D, which is connected with a lever-arm E, that is pivotally connected to one of the depending arms of the rocker-shaft by means of the link G and the C-shaped clip g. As thelifting-rod is raised (se'e Fig. 3) the connectinglink tends to assume a horizontal position, which action forces the depending arms of the rocker-shaft outwardly, thereby carrying the transom on its pivot outwardly, and as the superior weight of the transom is above the pivotal points the transom also tends to assume a horizontal position; but the heel of the transom bearing against the door-frame holds it at an angle until it .is entirely raised, thus opening the same gradually to one side of the frame. A bracket l-I is provided and secured to the door-frame, through which the lifting-rod is passed. This bracket is provided with a thumb-screw h, adapted to press against the lifting-rod, and thereby hold it in any desired position and also hold the transom in such position.
It is desirable to provide stop mechanism which will limit the upward movement of the transom and at the same time take part of the weight of the transom, and in order to accomplish this result we prefer to provide a U-shaped stop-rod I and drive it into the door-frame, as shown in Figs. l and 4. The transom is provided with a stop-lug K, that is adapted to bear against the upper portion IOC) of the stop-rod when the transom reaches its most open position, which is substantially a horizontal plane. The C-shaped clip on the lifting-rod is also arranged to contact a bracket H on the door-frame, and the transom has a second stop-lug K', which has its free end projecting through the opening formed by the C-shaped clip, as shown in Fig. 3, so that when the transom is in its most open position these stop-lugs rest again st their respective stops and take a portion of the weight from the pivots.
The lever-arm E, as above stated, is pivotally connected to one of the depending arms of the rock-shaft and has a projecting portion e, adapted to rest against such depending arm, as shown in Fig. 2, when the parts are in their closed position.
A projecting lug d' is formed on the liftingrod and adapted to bear against the free end of the stop-lug K when the parts are in their open position and during the initial downward movement of the lifting-rod. This projection lug forces the lower end of the transom downwardly, and thus assists in the closing operation.
XVe claiml. 2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a U-shaped rocker-shaft adapted to be secured to a frame above the transom so that its arms depend therefrom, a transom pivotally connected to the depending arms of the rocker-shaft, a lifting-rod, a link mechanism connecting the lifting-rod with the depending arms of the rocker-shaft to move the same and open and close the transom, substantially as described.
