(Application filed Se pt. 10, 1898.)

UNITED STATES PPATENT .OFFTQE- HENRY C. ALEXANDER, OF ERASTUS, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT E. ALEXANDER AND JULIUS L. SEWELL, OF SAME-PLACE.
COMBINED HAM ES AND COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,164, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed September 10, 1898. Serial No. 690,658. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erastus, in the county of Franklin and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Hames and Collar or Pad; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combined hames and collars or pads; and it consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide means for conveniently connecting hames and collars or pads so that they may be simultaneously arranged in operative position and adapted to be easily attached for such purposes or readily disconnected for repair or supplement of different pads for various purposes or on account of wear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of hames and parts of a collar or pad embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the improved device looking toward the side opposite that shown by Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of one of the collar-sections. Fig. 4 is a section on line w as, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar numerals are utilized to indicate corresponding parts in the several views, the numeral 1 designates companion hames constructed of material usually employed for the purpose, and having flat rear sides and outer or front sides with opposite curved edges. The lower ends of the hames are provided with the usual adjustable fastening devices 2, and at the upper ends have an adjustable strap 3, which also passes around the collar-sections, which will be more fully hereinafter referred to. To the said hames 1 are removably applied opposite collar-sections 4, which are shaped similar to the ordinary collar, and, as shown by Fig. 4, comprise a wooden or other back 5, an outer leather or textile covering 6, and an after such position is attained nuts 12 are 7 applied to said bolts to firmly secure the hames to the collar-sections. In removing the collar-sections from the hames the nuts are loosened to overcome the clamping action set up by the binding of said nuts, and thereby permit the collar-sections to be detached from the hames.
The advantages attained by the arrangement set forth are cheapness and durability, as well as comfort to the animal, particularly in hot weather, as the device shown is very much cooler than the ordinary arrangement of hames and collars. A further advantage is the adaptability of the combined hame and collar to the different sizes and shapes of horses or other animals, and the collar being openat both top and bottom, as fully shown, will come nearer to adjusting itself and can be easily regulated by the upper adjustingstrap 3.
The hames will be supplied with attachments usually employed in connection therewith, and it is obviously apparent that changes in the proportions, dimensions, and minor details of construction could be resorted to without in the least departing from the spirit or nature of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1 The combination with hames of removable collar-sections having stiif back sections each formed with a pair of keyhole-slots spaced apart from each other and having the enlarged portions thereof extending in the same direction and uppermost, and bolts passed through the hames and projected from the In testimony whereof I affix my signature latter, thelllleads1 of said beclts beifng fistlirtrin presence of two Witnesses. serted in t e en arge por ions 0 sai s 0 s i and then forced into the reduced portions of HENRY ALEXANDER 5 the latter a distance relatively to the adjust- Witnesses:
