SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,079, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed February 11, 1899. Serial No. 705,324. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, MYRON H. \VILCOX and JOHN G. STEWART, citizens of the United States, residing in the county of Livingston, State of Missouri, have invented an Improvement in Fishing-Reels, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the fishingreel constructed in accordance with the principles of our invention and taken looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 1 in Fig. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side of the reel from Fig. 1 and taken looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 2 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. at. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1.
Our object is to construct a fishing-reel in which the winding-drum will run at a very high rate of speed relative to the operatingcrank and in which the winding-drum may be readily thrown in and out of gear relative to the operating-crank.
A further object of our invention is to provide locking mechanism to hold the windingdrum from rotation; and a further object of our invention is to provide brake mechanism to regulate the speed of unwinding.
Our invention consists of a counter-shaft mounted parallel with the winding-drum, a stud or trunnion in longitudinal alinement with the winding-drum, a gear operating upon said trunnion, a second gear upon the end of the counter-shaft in mesh with the first-mentioned gear, an operating-crank attached to the first-mentioned gear, a third gear fixed upon the opposite end of the winding-drum from the first-mentioned gear, and a fourth gear upon the counter-shaft in mesh with the third-mentioned gear.
Our invent-ion consists, further, of mechanism whereby the third-mentioned gear is thrown in and out of mesh with the fourthmentioned gear.
Our invention consists, further, of a toothed wheel attached to one of the gears and a slide to engage said toothed wheel and lock the winding-drum against rotation; and our invention consists, further, of a spring and a slide to press the spring against one of the gears, as required, to form a friction-brake; and our invention consists, further, of the details of construction herein shown, described, and claimed.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the winding-drum 10 is rigidly fixed upon the shaft 11 and is mounted between the frameplates 12 and 13, said plates being held rig= idly in position relative to each other by means of the posts 14:. One end of the shaft 11 is pointed and operates in the cone-bear= ing formed in the plate 12 and the opposite end of the shaft extends loosely through the plate 13. The stud or trunnion 15 extends outwardly from the plate 12 in longitudinal alinement with the shaft 11, and the gear 16 is loosely mounted upon said trunnion. The operating-crank 17 is connected to the gear 16. The tube 18 is mounted parallel with the winding-drum 10 and connects the plates 12 and 13. The counter-shaft 19 extends loosely through the plates 12 and 13 and through the tube 18, and the pinion or gear 20 is fixed upon the counter-shaft19 and meshes with the driving-gear 16. The casing 21 is at tached to the plate 12 and incloses the gears 16 and 20, and the cone-bearing 22, carried by the casing 21, supports one end of the countor-shaft 19. The casing 23 is attached to the plate 13 and a cone-bearing 24, carried by said casing 23, supports the opposite end of the counter-shaft. The gear 25 is fixed upon the opposite end of the counter-shaft from the gear 20, and the gear26 is mounted upon the shaft lland is held by a spline or other suitable means (not shown) against rotation upon the shaft, but not against endwise motion, said gear 26 meshing with the gear 25. The cylindrical extension 27 of the casing 23 is located in longitudinal alinement with the winding-drum 10 and the cone-bearing 28 at the center of said extension 27 supports the shaft 11. The concentric openings 29 (shown in Fig. 2) are formed through the extension 27 and the yoke 30 is inserted through said openings. The groove 31 is formed around the hub 32 of the gear 26, and the inner ends of the yoke 30 are turned inwardly and opcrate in said groove 31. The vertically-extending grooves 33 are formed in the inner face and opposite sides of the extension 27 and the lugs 34 extend outwardly from the yoke into said grooves. The handle is attached to the yoke 30, the spindle 36 of said handle being screwed into the yoke at a point in alinement with the cone-bearing 28, and said bearing may be adjusted by removing the handle, thus forming a hole through which the screw-driver maybe inserted. \Vhen the handle 35 is grasped and pulled outwardly, the gear 26 slides upon the shaft 11 into the extension 27 and out of mesh with the gear 25. The coil-spring 37 operates to hold the gear 26 in mesh with the gear 25, and when the yoke 30 is drawn outwardly and slightly rotated the lugs 34 rest upon the lugs 38,which form the grooves 33, and thus resist the tension of the spring 37 and hold the gear 26 out of mesh with the gear 25. The inner ends of the teeth upon the gear 26 are sharpened and the outer ends of the teeth upon the gear 25 are sharpened to facilitate throwing in gear. The toothed wheel 39 is formed upon the side of the gear 25 and the slide 40 engages the teeth of the wheel 39 to lock the winding-drum against rotation. The slide 40 is connected to the casing 23 to move to and from the wheel 39, and the spring 41 is connected to the casing 23 with its free end engaging said slide. When the slide is moved outwardly, the spring holds it outwardly, and when the slide is moved inwardly the spring holds it inwardly. The spring 42 is attached to the inner face of the casing 21, and the wedgeshaped block or slide 43, operating in the slot through the casing 21, serves to press the free end of the spring 42 against the gear 16, thus serving as a friction-brake. The frame 44 is connected to two of the posts 14 and serves as a means of connecting the reel to the fishing-pole.
Assuming that the gear 16 is four times as large as the gear 20 and that the gear 25 is four times as large as the gear 26, then the winding-drum 10 will make sixteen revolutions while the crank 17 is makingone revolution.
We claim 1. In a device of the class described a winding-drum, a counter-shaft mounted parallel with the winding-drum, a trunnion, a gear upon the trunnion, a second gear upon the counter-shaft in mesh with the first-mentioned gear, a third gear upon the opposite end of the winding-drum from the first-mentioned gear and a fourth gear upon the counter-shaft in mesh with the third-mentioned gear, substantially as specified.
2. In a device of the class described, a winding-drum, a counter-shaft mounted parallel with the winding-drum, a trunnion, a gear upon the trunnion, a second gear upon the counter-shaft in mesh with the first-mentioned gear, a third gear upon the opposite end of the winding-drum from the first-mentioned gear, and a fourth gear upon the countershaft in mesh with the third-mentioned gear, and a crank for operating the first-mentioned gear, substantially as specified.
3. In a device of the class described a winding-drum mounted in asuitable frame, atrun- ,nion carried by said frame, a gear operating upon said trunnion, a counter-shaft mounted parallel with the windingdrum, a second gear upon said counter-shaft in mesh with the first-mentioned gear, a third gear upon the opposite end of the winding-drum from the firstmentioned gear said third gear being held against rotation relative to the windingdrum, and fixed for endwise motion, a fourth gear upon the counter-shaft in mesh with the third gear and means for operating said third gear to engage and disengage the fourth gear, substantially as specified.
