To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH T. LrPsooMB, a citizen of theUnited States, residing atA Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Rotary Tooth- Brush, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in rotary tooth brushes, the primary object of the invention being theprovision of a novel mechanism-forreleasing a springV motor for rotating the brush in onel direction, the casing containing the spring motor and releasing mechanism constituting the ,handle for manipulating the brush.
With the foregoingvand otheriohjectsgin, view which will appear as the descrip-tion proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement 'of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the casing which constitutes a handle, the same being composed of two members divided longitudinally and held t`ogethcr by' means of the bolts l.
Journaled in one wall of the casing is a shaft or stud 2 having upon the outer end thereof a winding disk 3 to which is connected one end 4 of the spring 5, whose other end is connected to the casing l, said spring constituting a motor for operating the brush B as will presently appear. Keyed upon the inner end cf the shaft 2 is a disk 7 carrying a pa-wl r-r detent 8 disposed in coactive relation with the teeth of the collar 9. carried by the large disk 10 provided with the bevel gear teeth 11. The disk 10 and spring 5 constitute Vthe motor, the ratchet connection at 8 providing a means whereby the handle 3 may be rotated in one direction without atlecting the disk 10 and during the Winding of the spring, the movement in the opposite direction being imparted by the spring 5 unwinding to rotate the d1sk.1O.
The gear 11 of the disk 10 is in mesh at all times with a small bevel pinion 12 keyed upon the inner end of the brush carrying shaft 13, said shaft 13 being properly jour' naled within the casing l vand carrying thereupon the toothedwheel 14 whose spinning is regulated -by means of the yescapement detent 15 journaled upon and carried by the post 16.
In order to release the toothed disk 14 to y*permit the brush Bto be rotated, the lever 17 provided with the disk engaging point 18, lis pivoted at 19, while the opposite end is controlled by the push pin 20 readily accessible to the operator exteriorly of the cas- /ing 1. The spring 21 is so disposed as to normally hold the point 18 in engagement with the toothed disk 14 so that the shaft 13 is locked against rotation.
Fromthe foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, itis evident that after the spring motor is wound', and in order to manipulate the brush B, that the Y operator will grip the casing 1 so that the thumb is presented to the push pin 20, and pushes the pin 20 so as to release the point 18 of the lever 17 andthe ratchet 14, which due to the escapementdetent 15 will regulate the rotation of the shaft 13 which is freed to the action of the motor. The continual manipulation of the pin 20 will produce the desired rotation of the brush and after the spring motor has expended its power, the' spring is wound by the manual -rotation of the shaft 2 through the disk3. lVhat is claimed is: 1. A rotary tooth brush, comprisinga casing, an arbor journaled in the casing, a spring operably connected to the casing and arbor, a disk keyed upon' the inner end of the arbor, a detent carried thereby, a toothed disk rotatably mouhted upon the arbor and provided with ratchet teeth to coact with the detent of the arbor disk to operably connect the geared disk to the arbor, a brush carrying shaft operably connected tolthe geared disk, an escapement device for regulating the speed' of rotation of the shaft, and.manually controlled means for locking and releasing the shaft. f Y 2.A A rotary tooth brush, comprising a casing, an arbor journaled in the casing, a spring operably connected to the casing and arbor, a disk keyed upon the inner end of toothed disk rotatably mounted upon the rotation, and a manually controlled means arbol' zuid provided with ratchet teeth to for releasing the lever.
