UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
ALFRED XVI'IITE MORGAN AND THOMAS EVERETT MORGAN, OF BURLINGTON, IOl/VA.
CE STAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,936, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed October 20, l 8 9 8- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALFRED WHITE Mon- GAN and THOMAS EVERETTMORGAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Burlington,in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Stays; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in wire fences; and it consists of a wire-fence stay provided with twisted loops; and the objects of our improved wire-fence stay are, first, to provide a single-wire stay that can be made rapidly with as many twisted loops twisted therein as desired to suit any wire fence, so that a loop may be twisted around port and strengthen the line-wires, and thus make a stronger fence; second, to twist a single-wire stay provided with twisted loops with one or more other wires, making a continuously twisted wire stay of I greater strength; third, to make an ordinary fence proof against small animals by the use of a We illustrate how we attain these objects in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a View of a single-wire stay having loops twisted therein. Fig. 2 is a View of a continuously-twisted wire-fence stay pro- Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a wire fence, showing our improved wire-fence stays with the loops thereof twisted around the line-wires of the fence, thus becoming a part of the fence. Fig. at is a perspective view of a section of wire fence, showing a single-wire stay made a part of the fence by having twisted loops tightly twisted around the line-wires of the fence.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, in which A represents a single-wire stay, having loops B twisted therein, as shown in Fig. 1,
Serial No. 694,145. (No model.)
which when placed against the line-wires F of a fence and the loops B twisted around the line-wires F, as shown in Fig. 4,- becomes a part of the fence and adds strength thereto.
The single-wire stay A,'provided with loops B twisted therein, may be twisted with one or more other wires, as shown in Fig. 2, in which a wire a, provided with twisted loops B, is twisted with two other wires 1) and c,
wire or wires so provided with twisted loops may be tightly twisted with one or more other wires (simultaneously twisting every part of the stay to form a continuously-twisted stay) without affecting or destroying the shape of the loops. Another feature of our improved wire-fence stay provided with twisted loops is that the loops may be tightly twisted around the line-wires F of a wire fence, as shown in Fig. 3, without affecting the twistin the wires that form the fence-stay.
The fence can be made of line-wires and our improved wire-fence stays, using as many line-wires and fence-stays as desired, to be afterward placed on and secured to fenceposts, or line-wires can first be strung on the posts and the fence-stays made a part of the fence thereafter.
We are aware that prior to our invention other kinds of twisted fence-stays provided with untwisted loops have been made.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A continuously-twisted wire-fence stay formed of three wires one of which is provided with twisted loops, (which are locked by the twist t11erein,) all of said wires being twisted together, forming a continuouslytwisted Wire-fence stay as shown, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED WHITE MORGAN. THOMAS EVERETT MORGAN.
