CLAY S. PRICE, OF SHELL, l/VYOMING.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,905, dated August 29, 1899.
Application filed April 6, 1899. Serial No. 711,998. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, CLAY S. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shell, in the county of Big Horn and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to washing-machines.
The object of the invention is to provide a washing-machine which will be simple in construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and one which may be easily operated and which will thoroughly cleanse the clothes. I
WVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved washingmachine. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the presser-board and wringer-support, and Fig. 8 is a sectional view through one end of the suds-box to more clearly illustrate one of its bearings.
In the drawings, 1 1 denote two standards supported by a base 3.
2 denotes the rocking suds-box, having bearing-thimbles 4: secured in its ends.
5 denotes two arms secured to the upper ends of the standards'and provided at their.
upper ends with a board 6,to which the clotheswringer is adapted to be secured. These casting-arms have inwardly-projecting studs '7, which project through the thimbles in the ends of the suds-box. One of these studs is formed with a right-hand screw-thread and with a smooth portion, the latter to engage the thimble in the end of the suds-box, and the other stud has a left-hand screw-thread and a smooth portion, the latter to engage the other thimble in the other end of the sudsbox.
8 denotes a presser-board having a corrugated working face.
9 denotes angular arms secured to the presser-board and provided with apertured heads 10, one, of which has a right-handed screw-threaded bore and the other a lefthanded screw-threaded bore to engage, respectively, the right and left handed thread on the ends of the studs.
11 denotes an operating-handle attached to the suds-box for rocking it.
In operation the soiled clothes to be washed are placed in the suds-box between the corrugated face of the presser-board and the side of the box and upon the bottom of the box. The machine is now rocked by the operatinghandle, and in each downward movement of the operating-lever the clothes are pressed against the presser-board and side of the box and the dirt and foreign matter forced therefrom. On each upstroke of the operatinglever the clothes are partially turned by the bottom of the suds-box.
In the operation of the machine it will be noticed that the tendency would be to loosen the presser -board upon its stud-bearings. By reason of providing the studs with right and left hand threads, however, this tendency is overcome, for every time the clothes are pressed against the board there is a tendency to screw the heads and the angular arms more tightly upon the studs and against the smooth portions thereof.
From the aforegoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
The machine is exceedingly simple, may be made at small cost, and is durable and effective in operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
and'are provided with right and left hand In testimony whereof I have hereunto set screw-threads on their extremities; a pressermy hand in presence of two subscribing Witboard, angular arms secured to said pressernesses.
board, and provided at their free ends with CLAY S. PRICE. 5 perforated heads having corresponding right Witnesses:
and left hand screw-threads to engage the H. LEE,
studs, substantially as described. JOHN 7W. HOWE.
